Interesting power supply choice for a 3070. 460W Night Sky Bronze PSU with ODD

I am also not sure if the 460W is enough for a 3070 and i7-12700K.

      • Interesting pickup - I had skimmed past it assuming that Dell knows what they're doing. Is it enough to recommend against buying?

        • +6

Yes, because good luck upgrading most things in the system in the future.

    • This has been a common point of discussion with the XPS line. I went with the Alienware (which also had its own issues) as they at least stocked those with a sizeable PSU

I would not recommend getting a PC with a 3070 + 12700K combo and such a small PSU.
I am quite sure a recommended PSU minimum is 650W.

    • The power rating is only a guide. What matters is the current ratings on the specific voltage rails and their hold up time in the event of surges. Since Dell have control over the whole system, their engineers will almost certainly have considered this so I wouldn't be worried about that at all.

Agreed. For the 12700K+3070, I would say 700W might be necessary if you plan heavily overclocked on both CPU and GPU. Otherwise, 600W should be good.

For sure its gonna be using a custom motherboard and PSU which makes those two and case basically useless, since you won't be able to upgrade either individually.

Yup confirmed check the service manual:
    https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-nz/product-support/prod…

Avoid unless you're ok with running it as is or stripping out the other components and selling/ditching the rest

  • from past experiences dell will limit in regards to overclocking so dont expect much other than using the intel software in windows, its just best to avoid this setup if you want something to upgrade in the future as they dont use standard powersupply form factor

  • A few things to note. I have been watching the Dell desktops for a couple of years.
    - Dell offer some well-priced systems. However they had much better value about a year prior. Dell used to have all these discount codes that stacked but alas no more. Also they used to always have revolving deals on their website. They don't appear to do this anymore also. This spec system has been on "clearance" for some time. NZ doesn't have a lot of well-priced desktops with high-end components.
    - intel gens - 11 gen avg - 12 gen goodish - 13 gen great.
    - Graphics card - 4th gen Nvidia graphics is out
    - Dell XPS desktop has some things which are proprietary - upgradability is usually a concern as far as ram and motherboard go.
    - You can always wait for the next thing - which I have been doing for the past two years!

Anyone know any well-priced desktop sellers? - My bro recently bought a system of Sean Oz on Facebook Marketplace - looks good but not latest spec.

    • what sort of spec are you looking to buy and how much are you looking to spend?
Also just gaming or other things like editing, ai etc too?

Similar specs for $6~ more, better power supply and you don't get locked into Dell hardware crap.

  • Dell's customer service is so poor. I bought a laptop from them previously. During the secondary week, I noticed that there was an issue with the system. Dell just refused to help me to resolve the issue and asked me to call Windows.
