Slingshot increasing broadband prices for customers on contract, here are your options

Based on a previous offer made by slingshot & listed here: https://www.cheapies.nz/node/39675, I signed up and now received and email notifying of a price change (for me increasing by $9.05/month).

  • You can call them for them to honour it and give a credit countering the same amount for the remaining period of your contract.
  • You can call and change your provider without incurring early exit or notice period fees (you have to give 30 days notice)
  • You can surrender and pay the price increase

Some of these answers are online:

Now I'll be checking if there's a better deal or accept the credit.

Update: Looks like I'll be joining 2degrees, they have 4 months free and $10 if I have mobile plan with them.

Why does Option 3 exist? And why is Option 1 not automatic?

    • These are options I found out upon calling, they don't announce the option to credit the variance on either the email or help pages.

    • When Skinny put up their prices a few months ago, I asked them to give me the old price for the remainder of my contract and they said no.

    • 95 percent of people wont call and do nothing so $$ for them

      • Chorus wholesale goes up 6.5% this year iirc, they are passing on some of that cost and their own increased costs.

  • I'm with Orcon and you only get one option, continue on the new price until the end of you contract.

    • I thought Orcon would be the same, give you the option of terminating your contract (due to the price increase) without incurring a fee

      • I thought the same but that's only for customer with broadband only, i also have power bundled with them and they refused unless i pay them early termination fee for power.

        • +1

that makes me wary of the broadband+power bundling. Means that you need to move both at the same time.
I guess that also applies if you want to switch power, you'll have to take the broadband elsewhere too

        • Ah I see, that's a bit unlucky…

          Good to know though, thanks.

    • Yeah, it says right here.

      https://help.orcon.net.nz/hc/en-us/articles/19652772977049-2…

We’d be sad to see you go, but if you decide that you want to cancel your Orcon services, let us know within 30 days of being notified about the change by giving us a call on 0800 13 14 15 and you can do so without incurring early exit or notice period fees – even if you’re in a fixed-term plan.

    • We complained to Orcon and because we were on an older plan (gigabit), they gave it to us for cheaper than what we are currently paying.

  • 2D only went up $5/mo and gave the option to end contract without penalty if you wanted.

    Discussed here as well.

  • Is option 1 mean to continue to pay the old price until end of the contract?

    • Yes

2D currently have 4 months free broadband and $97/month ($87/m if you have monthly mobile) atm.

Thinking about it but then a bit wary of their support from hearing what other people have gone through

  • I understand 2 degrees now owns a lot of different brands including Slingshot and Orcon. Always a good idea to do a bit of research into who owns the ISP brand you are using. I am still with Skinny, owned by Spark, who have just increased the price by $5 but always looking for a better deal.

    • 2D, Orcon and Slingshot all owned by Australian company Vocus Group, and Vocus Group is majority owned by American company Trilogy International Partners.

I joined Slingshot in May. Didn't receive the price increase email. Still shows $57.95 for Fibre 300 on the dashboard. My offer was from broadbandcompare though.

    • Likewise i haven’t received anything and I joined slingshot in July and for $65 a month

    • Same on vdsl here joined 2 months ago. Wonder if we are safe

    • Same as others, no notice yet. Into month 2 of free fibre.
Will move when if get the chance.

Had 6 months half price from orcon, 2 months free slingson (so far), adding another lot of free months would be sweet

    • Received the price increase email this morning. : (

  • NOW Broadband have sent an email saying they're increasing my broadband by $6 up to $95 a month. time to change providers

    • I got the 6 months half price on $89 which was good. Hopefully some new deals come up in October/ November

  • other than glimp and broadbandcompare is there any other deals?

  • +1

I suspect consolidation of the market means less and less deals due to reduced competition. We may have lots of brands, but many have been purchased overtime y a few big operators. Not good for consumers.

Is it hard to start up an isp? Can we start one up?

      Cheapies fibre

      • Need a cheapies mobile too. Kogan without a bogo.

  • Just had email from NOW broadband also, $6 rise from 1st Nov. When I asked why the price increase as I am on 12 month contract from Apr 23 (6 months half price then 6 months regular price). They told me that was for the promotion price not the regular price and the new regular price will be $95. If I cancel, I would have to pay $199 early termination fee. I think I am right in saying, if they change the contract terms, I can cancel without the termination fee, is that correct?

    • Presumably you have a contract, but it would come down to the actual agreement you 'shook hands on' at the time.

    • Does your contract allow them to adjust pricing? I suggest you review it and if not complain via the TDR if you really want to leave.

  • Maybe this is an irony, I ended up closing the account which meant I only paid for 1 month out of the 5 with Slingshot due to their offer and bad decision making time, so they're opting out of their contract obligations.

Now signing up to another provider with 4 months free.

      2 deg?

      • +2

If not Slingshot, must be 2degrees.

      • Yes

    • +2

Successfully ended up the contract with 1 month notice, ended up paying for 1 mount out of the 5 I spent with slingshot.

Now moved on to 2degrees (same group) and for another 4 free months for slightly cheaper monthly rates afterwards.

If 2degrees change their minds again, I'll take the opportunity to move out racking up as much free months as possible.

      • What order were your steps for transferring to 2deg?

I'm only asking as last time I switched from Skinny to Slingshot, I phone Skinny to cancel, then ordered Slingshot, but then Slingshot phoned me saying I had to call Skinny and cancel the cancel order with Skinny so they could go ahead and establish my new internet. Just want to avoid this again.

        • +1

I have found that the best approach is to talk to the new provider first, then follow their instructions / process for what to do with your old provider to give notice etc.

Called 0800 89 6000, asked to speak to the retention team. They applied an one-off credit which offset the increased amount. No hassle.

    • Thanks, I have just done the same and agree got the one off credit no hassle.

  • Sent them an email yesterday, 2 accounts increasing $10 and $9.05 a month. Email back today saying they will apply a credit for $152.04 covering the 8 month term left on each.
