Washing Machine under $1,000

Hi Brains trust
We're looking to replace our washing machine. Looking at a decent size 8-10kg ideally for under $1,000
Have looked at some models in Trade Depot and also The Warehouse.
Just wondering what experience people have with Midea and Living & co brands

Do they come with decent guarantee/warranty??

Or is it best to avoid the budget brands??

Would welcome any advice or recommendations

Thank you
😁👍🙏

Bosch is good but might just be out of your budget (I grabbed the 8kg WAN24121AU for $1200 delivered last year).

  • @Tmurder91 do you still have those screenshots?

Yup, probably best to not share here, but heres a quick overview of the top ranked ones around that $1000 mark (in order)

LG WVS-1408W (slight variations on name depending on the current version or shop you get from)
      LG WVS-1275W
      Bosch WAN2412AU
      LG WTC6520
      LG WTC7520
      LG WTC8521
      Beko BFL7510W

The first 3 are front loaders, scoring 74 and above
The last 4 are top loaders, scoring 70-74

      • i agree i have two lg washer and washer dryer combo from LG i have used samsung ,Miele, speed queen, f & p and other front loads at work , I find LG to be the Best so far

  • I have a F&P smart drive toploader which has lasted years and washes fine. They used to make then in NZ, and think mine is NZ made. Think they now make them in China after China purchased F&P, but they looks almost the same.

I would avoid TradeDepot and Midea and go for a second hand machine of a well known brand off TradeMe/FB. Look for F&P, Bosch, LG, etc. If you aren't in a hurry you can usually pick up a good deal

Avoid that stuff. Wait for a sale and get a Bosch, LG or Samsung when they dip below $1000. Black Friday is coming up, so surely there'll be something for you then

If you getting a front loader, get the biggest one you can afford. If you are used to a toploader, you will notice the size difference

I second this. Additionally, don't go solely by weight capacity, check drum volume as well. We bought a new machine earlier this year, went in to store certain I'd decided which model we were getting based on consumer ratings and reviews until the sales rep pointed out the drum size difference between washers with the same weight capacity.

  • Happy users of "cheap" appliances here, those are very matured technologies, we don't see the need to buy branded ones. We always go for the cheapest available (TWH, TD, even Bunnings), TWH have reasonably good after sale service.

    • What's your current washing machine?

      • +1

A 6kg Akai top loader display unit bought from TWH.

        • How much use has it had?

@Plug: The current one was bought in January this year. The one it replaced was about 7 years old.

  • Based on the weight requirements I would possibly up your budget by a couple of hundred, as that will give you access to better brands and quality. But you maybe able to pickup something in a sale, and with Black Friday deals. Also there maybe some good deals second hand, as quite a lot of people heading over to Oz and getting rid of whiteware. IMO the big issue is often getting it home, as stores can charge nearly a hundred to deliver.

  • Good place to look for some reviews, even though its an Australian site and some models may not be available here: https://www.productreview.com.au/c/washing-machines

  • F&P top loader all day every day. Personal experience with them, and advice from the appliance repair guy I know. They are the Toyota Hilux of washing machines. Simple tested design over decades. Go forever and if parts or repairs ARE ever needed they are cheap and easy to repair.

  • got a washer and dryer for $600 total from trade depot, they've been great. so cheap!

  • Agree, bought a 5kg front loader and it's really tiny. Top loaders are far better for capacity. The only advantage to the front loader is you can use the top of it for bench space. I'll be going back to top loaders when the next machine is needed. Wouldn't recommend second hand either, washers only last so long and it's a hassle when they give up. Go new

    • The only advantage to the front loader is you can use the top of it for bench space.

They're also gentler on clothing and tend to be more efficient with water and energy consumption than comparable top loaders.

  • Front Load > Top Load
Check out shops like Harvey Norman Outlet, Farmers on sale, Noel Leeming Outlet.
Samsung 8kg and 8.5kg always dip below $1000 mark. Panasonic and Haier ones are around the same mark.

  • Agree with front loaders being gentle and water efficient. Mine has a high water star rating. But don't get charged for water and have to do an extrra cycle half the time as it doesn't rinse well and can still see suds. Not a big hassle but would prefer it rinsing properly every time.
Front loaders might be a good choice if your charged for water
