I think it's $42,990 including GST, not GST on top of that. Or am I reading that wrong? So, 35,975 (incl. GST) + ORC after Rebate?

    A write up on Stuff
    https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/133066018/cheaper-than-a-co….

    • Yeah, it has:

      From $42,990 RRP inc GST + ORC1

      • Yeah thought as much. Was just unsure as to why OP wrote the opposite.

Sorry if I messed up the title, can't even recall what I wrote. Thanks for fixing it anyway.

It's a funny looking thing this but this was the price I was hoping for when they launched it earlier in the year. It was always billed as a cheap small "stylish" ev overseas and now it's at least two of those things here.

    • It's kinda like a Porshe & fiat 500 had a baby, then it was stretched to make a 4 door.

      • Definitely Italian inspired, on the surface its like it took the classic design elements of what inspired it as you can clearly see each design cue it's used, but unfortunately feels like less than the sum of its parts mashing up just the iconic bits.

I've always said it looks like a Porsche and a Nissan Leaf had a baby. The back is very leafy.

I think we'll see quite a lot more of these discounts in the run up to the end of the year. The EV retailers are realising that when the double whammy of CCD being removed (if NACT come into power) and RUCs coming in in March 2024, EVs are suddenly going to a whole lot less appealing. They absolutely don't want to be stuck with inventory they've already committed to and will discount heavily to clear as many units as possible.

Ending the rebate & uncertainty around RUC, could well see some brands dump their stock and pull out of the NZ market.

RUC is partially important. Moving all vehicles to RUC would be OK, but putting EV's on 7.6c/km while yaris hybrids pay a third of that in petrol road tax, would pretty much kill the market for cheaper EV's overnight. (just like RUC killed the market for small economical diesels like the VW polo bluemotion).

Somehow I don't think it will pan out as negatively as what it could. The only way for a political party with a massive road building program in policy to maintain environmental credibility is to promote the shift to EV's.

That’s just it. Would be tempted to dump the Phev for a basic Toyota hybrid instead at this rate.

        • Yes PHEVs have the potential to get taxed twice. I was initially interested in the new Mazda CX60, but the uncertainty over RUCs on anything that plugs in, and the fact that it runs on Premium rather than 91 petrol, and is not very fuel efficient when the EV range has gone turned me off it. The small Toyota / Lexus hybrids look a good option at the moment, but for many there is a long waiting list. A car dealer told me that they are finding that EVs are depreciating a lot faster ATM than hybrids or full petrol, and deprecation is the biggest cost with EVs

@nzmax: "A car dealer told me that they are finding that EVs are depreciating a lot faster ATM than hybrids or full petrol, and deprecation is the biggest cost with EVs"

Rule of thumb, don't every believe what a car dealer tells you. He's probably trying to sell you something that he makes the best margin on.

Second hand EVs prices have come down a little in price, mainly because companies like Tesla have reduced the price of new cars, but they still hold their value remarkably well when this is taken into account.

@nzmax: Yeah nah don't listen to car dealers. Go to any EV forum / FB group and find tens of thousands of stoked owners. If you're not driving hundreds of Kms a day the revolution arrived a while back.

I have bought and sold a couple of used Leafs (great cars) and they have constant demand since Covid/cost of living.

Dont listen to the endless FUD. EVs coming down in price benefits everyone. Yes early adopters pay a premium. Thats over now. So did the first mobile phone owners, and everyone called them yuppies.

  • Chinese cheap knock off of the vw beetle. i rather get the tank 300 for few more dollars. Anyway i don't think it's a deal giving it is selling below 30k in China and not desirable at all.

    • +1

I don't really see any beetle in it. To me the front end looks very Porsche.

Just looked up the tank 300. Very impressive spec sheet for price, but in a very different market segment.

On china pricing for the Ora. Note that the entry version in china has a lower powered motor (105kW vs 128kW), and there might be other spec differences. Also freight, GST and the cost of NZ specific legislation like the Consumer Guarantees Act need to be built into the NZ price.

My take is that a $5000 price drop making it NZ's cheapest BEV does make it a deal.

I would rather walk than be seen driving this

  • I can see a lot of these sorts of small Chinese cars coming out and wouldn't be surprised to see them in the $20k range in the next few years but with better range.
