Asking for parents. MG HS PHEV looks ideal in terms of size, budget and good value offers however NZ is still only showing the old model and not the new shape.
They are open to other brands.

I like the Outlander but would you say it is mid-size or full size? MG HS is a bit smaller right? Thanks
On mid size / full size, it's somewhat ambiguous, but generally, those terms stem from north America, and err towards the massive size.
I.e.
Full Size: Mercedes GLS, Landcruiser 300.
Mid size: Toyota Highlander, Kia EV9
Compact: Rav4, Outlander, MG HS, Eclipse cross
Subcompact: Honda HRV, Hyundai Kona
Crossover city car: Suzuki Igness

But to answer the question, year, the out-lander is bigger (about 120mm longer).
They could consider the smaller Eclipse Cross SUV, it's smaller and cheaper, but it's and old design and drivetrain, where the new outlander has just got a big update, including a lot better electric range.
Personally, I would be looking at the Toyota signature class (used, but refurbished to a high standard) Rav4 Prime / Plug in. Most Powerfull toyota that doesn't have supra on it's badge, and great economy in hybrid mode once the fuel tank is flat. Even gets a spare tire, unlike most plug in's. Rav4 is about 25mm longer than the MG HS.
I think the outlander is around 200mm longer but it is still a "mid size SUV"
I'd consider the Outlander mid size after owning one.
The likes of a Mazda CX9, Toyota Prado etc would be a full/large size? The outlander is defiantly a mid size SUV, the MG HS PHEV is a small cross-over.
I think Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV is good mid size SUV. Sorry no experience with it, but 2 of my neighbors have it and see quite a lot on road, so definitely popular.
ex-Japan Rav4 Prime? It's not brand new but it's PHEV on Rav4 platform and I'm happy with my Petrol Rav4 size.
Some good options there, thanks everyone!
as per information from auctions and compliance people in nz i feel outlander 2.4 l PHEV is very good
A friend of ours has the latest shape Outlander PHEV and really likes it. Goes around 80km on battery so doesn't need petrol for his commute if he plugs in each night. Still a good size SUV and 4WD for trips up the mountain with kids.
