Hi Alan. Did it show as 998 on pbtech site when you viewed? Or 1.6k?
First comment so I’d imagine $998 (+ it was that price when I edited the deal).
Do you know how I can get real time notifications of deals posted here. I keep missing out
@upbeat: No idea sorry. I don't subscribe to anything on here (no notifications outside of Cheapies). Just check it regularly.
@bigcheese any ideas?
@Wakrak: To get an email notification you could set up an alert.
- Click on the search bar at the top of the page and type in what you would like to get notified.
- For example if you want to know anytime someone posts something about Trade Me then type in "Trade Me" and press Enter.
- Click the "Create Alert" box that then pops up and your alert is set.
If you want to see all Alerts you have created you can go to:
https://www.cheapies.nz/user/-/subscriptions/event
@upbeat: There is an RSS linked in the footer of the page - I think it refreshes every 10 minutes
https://www.cheapies.nz/deals/feedYou could subscribe to that using your preferred method (I pull it into my discord server for example)
You could then allow discord to send you notifications any time there is an update in that channel

Pretty sure, but I don't have a screenshot or anything.
Perhaps it was a Black Friday / Cyber Monday deal that ended.
Seemed like a good deal to me, especially for someone that needed the general specs - no idea about the GPU but I don't play games on my laptop. 12 months ago, I would have bitten your hand off for this deal, but I guess that is always the way if you wait 12 months :-)
I saw it at that price, but it changed at midnight after the sale ended.
it was 998 for me when I clicked the deal link the day it was posted
I’m seeing $1,623.52 in the link. Or is it just me?
Seeing the same price as you.
Yip, $1,623.52 too
Now "discounted" to $1,580.20
It was originally discounted as OP indicated but they bumped up the price :(
Possibly because their black friday sales ended and prices went back up on the 1st. How often do they have sales? Guessing there will be a boxing day one?
Would not recommend the RTX™ 2050 Laptop GPU (4 GB GDDR6 dedicated) if this was bought for gaming in mind.
It is a laptop gpu released December 2021 and its equivalent in power to PC version GTX 780 or GTX 1650
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-2050-mobil…
Would recommend going with a console if wanting to do gaming.
A xbox series s console is more powerful with double the dedicated ram, 8gb at a much cheaper price.
I agree that it's not a great GPU and it's an odd option to pair with a 144hz screen. It might be the right choice for someone who needs a laptop anyway or wants a portable gaming device.
I don't think the series s is going to be a whole lot more powerful though. It seems like it is a comparable card, and doubling vram just means there are a select few games that might be unplayable on the laptop (hogwarts legacy, from memory, is vram heavy). Having only 10gb ram on the series s is just as likely imo to be an issue.
True the Xbox S is not that much more powerful but I disagree on the Vram.
4GB of vram dedicated vs 8GB (10GB total, Series S uses 2GB for OS) will have a big impact on any games that have decent sized texture packs.Plus the price of an Xbox S is about $550 vs what is showing up for me as the current price of the laptop $1,623.52.
Currently more and $1000.00 difference isn't worth to have as a portable gaming machine. The laptop is definitely not worth $1600 yeah, I think for 1k it would be a good option for some.
Vram isnt usually much of an issue til a specific game wants more than you have, making it unplayable or forcing you to tweak settings. With such a low end card though, 4gb should be acceptable. What games are you concerned wouldn't work with 4gb vram?
That's interesting on the series s ram. I thought it had 8gb vram and 10gb system ram. 2gb is crazy given the standard was 16gb system ram on release.
@BJ: I used to use a 960 2GB GTX until August 2021.
So it is less games will not work and more the experince will be poor and games may not work.
Having textures, shadows, lighting on the lowest isn't the best experince imo.
Having higher textures, lighting and shadows can make a game look totally better imo, than running it on low.Couple games based on their PC specs:
Call of Duty: Warzone
Min 2-3GB
Recommended 4-8GBMetro Exodus
Min 2GB (1080p 30FPS)
Recommended 8GB (1080 60 fps)The Last of Us Part 1
Min 4GB
Recommended 8GBThere will be more but I am not going to go hunting down every example because there are tons of games that do use less so it is a bit of a useless endeavour.
Consoles are generally amazing bang for buck when compared to other low end gaming products…. Mind you I own a steam deck, so portable gaming can have its place.
"E-sports" games generally don't need much vram, so 4GB should be enough, especially since those players are turning most things to low anyway.
@Fox419: I couldn't find particularly accurate info on different vram at such low spec in those games using the rx 580 4gb vs 8gb. (COD had no difference, metro the 4gb did 20% better and TLOU 8gb did 20% better). I expect your experiences with these games may show that 2gb vram is too little. 4gb should be fine (maybe with ~20% worse performance in TLOU), and the minimum specs reflect this.
I used a 2gb gtx 770 around 2016-2018 which is very similar to your 960. I know that 2gb vram is often not enough and can be frustrating and force you to lower AA, shadows etcetera. 4gb is not 2gb though. On 1080p medium settings, not many games will be pushing over 3-4gb.
Here's a video that might help show you the impacts vram can have on fps: https://youtu.be/7iNNUAnFjcM?t=140
At the time linked, the game has almost double the average fps and lows, so I'd say 3gbvram is "not enough". The next game has a ~20% difference in a couple scenes, you can see vram is being pushed and 3gb is slightly below the acceptable minimum for these games/settings. The other games perform less than 10% better average fps and lows. This will be the majority of cases, especially when comparing 4vs8 gb.I think that consoles are good value on launch for certain people. Right now less so; you could build a pc new or used for the price of a new or used console with the same fps but a cheaper ssd. Deals like this one are not the best choice for everyone. Gaming laptops are only really a good option when gaming portability is important or someone is buying a laptop regardless and has no other device.
I'm seeing $1,599?
$1,580.20is what i get
I’m seeing $1,623.52 in the link. so it is like a stock price, keep fluctuating, huh?
Guessing you don't have a membership key attached to your account (I get $1,580.20).
Some refurbished gaming laptops over at ExtremePC. Unsure if any good.
