Aircon Suggestions? Is My Quote Reasonable?

Hi All,

This is relative of my responses from this post - https://www.cheapies.nz/node/45185

Located in Auckland in a townhouse we are looking at installing a highwall unit in our bedroom. We have been quoted $2950 for the below.

Option 3
To supply install and commission Mitsubishi high wall air-conditioning unit. 1 x
Mitsubishi AP25 (2.5kw cooling, 3.2kw heating). Extra Pipework $200
Price $2950.00 including GST. Available Ex Stock.

Is this reasonable?

  • E.g. or am I more worth of buying one of these and getting someone to install?

Consumer usually ranks the Mitsubishi heat pumps highly. I don't think the same applies for TradeDepot ones

Most installers don't like doing this as they will make less money and if something goes wrong it causes difficulties.
If you can find someone to do the install, expect around $800 for a simple install (back to back).
Don't know much about the Midea units, but personally I'd stick with well known brands such as Mitshi or Daikin.

I can't say specifically as I am not in the industry nor had a quote recently to compare with, however if I was doing this, I would be getting a few quotes from various places which should give you some perspective as to what the reasonable costs are likely to be.

  • Can't remember what the model was but I installed Mitsubishi heavy industries aircon last year for 2x room multisplit (1 outdoor unit, 2 indoor unit) for $4700. I think it's the same 'strength' of 2.5kw cooling but can't confirm at the moment.

I think the quote is reasonable for Mitsubishi? I quite like it and it's low noise and does the job especially now in summer can cool a standard double bedroom quite quick.

  • I got a Mitsubishi installed 2 years back. Via EnergySmart.
    Got the EcoCore AP 42= 4.2 / 5.4 kW for $2699

Your quote looks expensive. I would shop around and then ask them to price beat it. Thats what I did with EnergySmart.

  • Ask for a break down in costs.
This will show if the labour costs are high or the unit cost is high.

I did this for my 6.5kw mitsi unit.
Ended up saving $400 on unit and $1000 off install.

You should get a few quotes to compare, but note that if yours is a non-standard installation then it's always more expensive than a back-to-back install on the ground level.

Btw if your house requires heating in winter then best to get a heat pump rather than just a cooling-only air cond.

  • I have also been asking around for quotes for a 2.5kw cooling 3.2kw heating, and the quote given to you does seem a bit expensive. As others have said, definitely shop around first.

I was quoted $3,900 (incl GST) for 2x Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Multi Head Air Conditioning Set

Unsure about the price but I made a big mistake by going to an installer that is $200 cheaper than a big firm, for the overall quote for 2 ACs. Ended up with lots of issues, poor workmanship and I had to escalate to Panasonic directly to get them to get the installer to respond to me.
Do your research for the installer before committing to one.

2.5KW AP25 was ~1.9k back in Jan 2022. Most affordable quotes were from https://affordableenergysolutions.co.nz/ and https://www.happyairheatpumps.co.nz/

Others were significantly higher in the 2.2-2.6k range.

We have since used both. Happy Air's workmanship is better but AES' customer service is better. We went with the premium LN25 range and it was 2.6k then.

    • enquired for both. Thanks

  • Try https://www.relianceventilation.com/ and get the quote.

I know the guy so can get good discount if you want. Pm me

By the way go with Mitsubishi. That ap25 is good. Also would recommend wifi module, makes it way easier to control

  • Midea is not a brand that is highly regarded. I paid $20 and got the consumer review. I ended up going with a Daiken because of high efficiency plus reliability. Mitsubishi heavy industries also ranked highly. I also opted for a well known installer with good reviews

  • Sounds about right, our last Mitsubishi 25 unit was $3000 installed. (Upstairs bedroom 3 or 4 months ago)
Installed by Hot Chilli in Lower Hutt.

  • We got a 2.5Kw Mitsi unit installed in our bedroom about 5 years ago it has extra piping. Got charged $3500 ish. Ripped off but that was our own fault because we didn't get different quotes. Very good Aircon tho but that business got ZERO more dollars out of us due to their own greed. Tried to get us to do yearly 'service' for $150+ gst . Pass. Anyway got a 7 (?) Kw installed in the lounge for the same price last year- Mitsi again. Different installer. Honest people and very very good reputation. The lesson - SHOP AROUND. But yeah Mitsi are good units.

    • There are 2 factors that complicate your comparison here: inflation, and the bedroom install seems more work than the lounge install.

I had a Mitsubishi Electric Hypercore 6kw installed 7 years ago for about 4.5k. It was a tricky install. Went with ME because it has the reputation of being quiet, and I'm quite sensitive to noise.

Btw Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are two different brands. Both are good but ME is more expensive.

      • ****There are 2 factors that complicate your comparison here: inflation, and the bedroom install seems more work than the lounge install.****

Yeah inflation doesn't count as the more recent install was the same cost as the much older install yet the Heat pump was twice the capacity. The bedroom install wasn't THAT much harder at all I think we were just a bit silly and didn't shop around. The bedroom Mitsi is indeed very quiet. The lounge one, (larger), isn't quite as quiet but boy does it work ! In fact both are very very good at both heating and cooling. Bedroom one was the best investment we ever made I'd say as sleeping on hot nights is not problem now !
