I got this for free last year as a benefit of having an Amex Platinum card.

I used my free night during a holiday to Australia at the Sofitel Darling Harbour. From memory it was the cheapest room.

There is a hidden monetary value attached. Obviously room rates will vary between hotels and countries and nights selected, so at a certain point of room cost you would have to pay a bit extra (ie room is $450, you might have to pay $50 to book it).

I also got a voucher for breakfast for two at any Accor property. I eventually used this at Sofitel Wellington for breakfast at Jardin (terrible btw, would not recommend).

Otherwise one of the main benefits of this membership is the dining discounts. Sadly I never actually used this, but you get a discount on the food bill (drinks excluded) if dining at an Accor restaurant (don't have to be a guest or anything). 2 people = 50%, different numbers of people have different discounts. There are some very helpful NZ made (I think MoneyHub?) YouTube videos on exactly how to properly book and use this discount.

Basically if you want to stay a night at the Sofitel or SO/ (probably wouldn't waste the free night on one of their lesser hotels) and would probably make use of the dining discount then this would be a good deal.

    However….

Accor websites, the app, Accor Plus/Accor All.. the entire Accor ecosystem.. is really, really un-user friendly. Like really confusing trying to remember what is what.. you might login and then it acts as if you aren't.. it can be difficult to view what discounted room rates are (even if advertised to your face). And their website booking system still sucks, and has sucked for years because it hasn't changed for years.

(To further elaborate - Accor All is their standard loyalty programme, similar to other hotel chain loyalty programmes. Stay nights, earn points, go up statuses. Classic>Silver>Gold>Platinum>Diamond. Accor Plus (which is what this deal is about) is a paid membership with separate perks and benefits. One of these benefits is that you get Accor All Silver status. It is the Accor Plus membership that offers the free night and discounted dining, while the Accor All silver status gives 'welcome drink', 'priority welcome', 'late checkout', plus benefits of Classic membership like 'free wi-fi'. )

    • Thanks for the info. Seems like you are an expert, so I am going to shoot a few questions to you (and the wider cheapies community) :)

      • Is the stay plus only available in certain countries? (and not USA)
      • When dining, if you bring 2 kids (under 5), do they count as guests as well?

Also seems like so many hotels require you to stay for at least 2 to 3 nights as well when using your stay plus - almost defeats the purpose of a free night.

      • Hi

I don't know for sure, but I think the free night is available worldwide. It is a worldwide membership scheme.

Not sure about the kids, sorry!

      • Would recommend to browse around for hotel to use stay plus night, try to maximize your value when using stay plus for the most dollar available. From what I have observed it really depends on the hotel to set their price benchmark to use stay plus, some set it at a certain dollar value, some would allow redemption for the entire nightly rate.

A good example from my recent stay is Sofitel Singapore City Center which cost NZD454 for one night if paid by cash, but I could apply stay plus to get the one night entirely for free. Another stay plus night I did a few years back was Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua, which usually cost around $350+ a night.

Vaguely remembered that most Accor properties in NZ have a benchmark rate of around $200, therefore stay plus benefit could be used on most properties under $200. Or if the property is more than $200 you can top up to the hotel nightly rate. eg: Normal rate $240 per night, if stay plus is used, you will need to top up an additional $40 for one night. So using stay plus in NZ is not a good redemption in my opinion, only use it when your membership is going to lapse.

    • This post deserves a sticky

      Great stuff, thanks

    • The dining discount is great even for local restaurants so the membership comes in handy when you're not travelling too.
      The discount % = 100% ÷ Number of Diners
      E.g 2 diners = 50% off, 3 diners = 33% off.
Only exception is if you're dining alone then it's 33% off only.

      • Do you know if kids under 5 count as guests?

        • Not sure sorry. Best to call up Accor or one of their restaurants.

        • It really depends on the restaurant. Some better ones will only count the adults if 2 adults and 2 kids which will give you 50% off.
so YMMV, tried it once where there are 3 adults and 1 kid, and the restaurant gave us 33%.

        • Confirm in the past, they never count as guests as long as they order from the kids menu

  • cant renew as my membership expires end of Apr, oh well

    • Yeah that is one thing I did notice as I was perusing - cannot be a renewal. I figured if I wanted to do it for another year I'd just get my partner to sign up.

  • Whats the difference between the three membership levels (traveller, explorer, discoverer)?

    • Click through and it shows you - something like, bottom tier has no free night, middle tier includes the free night, and top tier has free night and some other stuff.

I am scheduled to be going to an Accor hotel in a month or so, but not going to pull the trigger on this as it would require me to eat at least 3 nights (out of the 5) in the hotel just to break even, so doesn't make sense for us. Probably would have, if it came about before I booked though :( haha #timing

  • Is there a way to check what hotels are available for the free night? Also is there additional discount on usual room rates vs what you get on booking.com?

My holiday to Aus was Sydney and Melbourne for 8 nights I think. Since I was with Amex I also had hotel loyalty status with Marriott and Hilton and so transferred bonus Amex points to Marriott points to book accommodation.

I spent many hours calculating the best combination of points redemption on which night at which hotel to get best back for buck.

So in that context, with the Accor free night, I do remember seeing that I could use it at both the Sofitel Darling Harbour and Sofitel Sydney Wentworth on days I was looking to be in Sydney. The Darling Harbour one was in a better spot and looked nicer so went with that, but if my memory is right I could have got a better room at Wentworth (room rate at Darling Harbour is higher).

For a layperson, as I mentioned re the Accor ecosystem.. its really not the easiest to tell. You need to spend a bit of time on the website/app playing around to see if you can redeem a free night or not.

I believe as part of Accor All and/or Accor Plus you can get a discount on the room rate above and beyond third party sites like booking.com yes.

  • It's a decent membership if you use up the benefits often enough.

Can use the membership status to upgrade other membership programs as well like a cruise status.

Does have it's perks too as we flew into Singapore where I had booked the free night early in the morning and they were quite happy to let us check in early in the morning because we were a member of the program.

    • How far in advance did you book? I just signed up and looked at couple dates 6 months in advance in singapore and nothing is eligible for free night.

      • +1

either have to very early or last minute, popular hotel is always hard to book as there is very limited availability. it is not worth it if at paying full price for the accor plus, be should be all right if at half of the price

      • +1

Can't remember but it was probably a bit in advance. As someone else mentioned, can be awkward to find stuff using their website etc as well.

  • Oh annoying as just paid full price last month! Anyway stayed at Sofitel in Fiji and got 50% off meals at all the restaurants there and we got early check in etc plus we have a free night to use elsewhere too. Will be going to restaurants here in NZ to use 50% off too

  • Also they have Hot Deals

    • These are really good!!

  • Thanks for sharing. My wife and I are planning to have a night away in the Auckland CBD for our upcoming anniversary and this saves quite a bit of money on a high end hotel.

Just FYI if you have a farmlands card.

You get an extra 10% Rebate from ya bill if you pay using your farmlands card at Accor hotels (Including meals etc)

  • Thanks OP - booked a free night at Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour!

    • can you please share the value? just roughly how much the room would cost without the free night and how much you saved? thanks.

      • No problem! Just looked at the app and the Accor Plus member rate for the superior room is $382.51. The price I paid for the membership is $199 and I also have a pending Cashrewards cashback of $12.10 so I've saved like $195!

        • Does it have a requirement on the minimal length of stay in order to redeem the free night?

          • @EthanY: Not for the date I booked for - just one night.

  • If there are 2 people dining, does the 50% discount apply to food only, or the food and the wine bill? (ie total bill for 2)

  • Might also wanna try these Millennium Hotels (Also Copthorne and Kingsgate) deals for New Zealand Locations through Awaytogo.
