When a manufacturer is not confident that their product will last more than two seasons use I also share their lack of confidence. In which case why wouldn't I spend half the amount of that money on a Goldair or other generic rebadged product which I know from experience will last an average of 2-3 years. If indeed the more expensive product is a better quality product then the manufacturer needs to stand behind that and make it clear with a longer warranty than what a known to be shitty brand offers. I would be more than happy to pay double the Goldair price for a good quality product that will last, but what indication do I have that this is the case?

That's a great argument, and I feel this moreso in NZ. In Australia one could argue under consumer law that a product priced at a premium would be expected to last longer than a cheap product, and essentially get a longer statutory warranty in addition to the manufacturers warranty.
