bloody hell we're getting the leftover leftovers

    Isn't 27inch a little bit to big for 1080p?

    • +1

Most 32inch screens were 1080p for many years.

    • Depends on your use case, and mostly, your view distance. Most 32" TV's are only 1080p, so if someone has been gaming on a TV, this is still an upgrade.

  • +4

Bought it last year and had to return it. 1080p is not suffice for 27 inch, anything above 2kp is very good.

  • You guys should really consider buying from FB Marketplace. Even though they're 2nd hand, the price is really good and condition is good too.

I literally picked up a 30' 1440p monitor for $200 and a 4K Samsung monitor for $300 the other week.

And who buys 1080p monitors these days? Even my 16' and 14' portable monitors are 2K.

    • Or consider buying from Trade Me, because Marketplace has its own issues. Awful for sellers, not amazing for buyers either. Depends on the item.

      • FB Marketplace has more scams for sure, but more items on there and much cheaper based on my experiences. A Ninebot scooter on TM would go for e.g. $600 and it'd be like $250 on FB Marketplace. Obviously, be careful and have due diligence on either platforms.

    • 1080p is literally the standard and majority of esports and gamers in general use a 24" 1080p monitor because fps > resolution

It's not a maybe, you can go and look at data right now. 1080p is the most common resolution for both general use and gaming:

          https://www.statista.com/statistics/1445439/leading-desktop-…

You can also see on popular tech/gaminmg youtube channels like optimumtech the monitors most recommended are still usually 1080p with high refresh rates.

            @chunder: That's beside the point.

By your logic, people may as well just stick to:

            • Windows XP or Windows 7, because it was popular back in the days. Who cares about lack of security updates and support
            • USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 transfer speeds and use USB type A port
            • Don't use 2K, 4K or 8K resolutions because those are too fancy

We're living in 2024 now. 1080p is so 10+ years ago. We're not peasants, at least I'm not. If people want to stay peasants because they don't want to get a gaming monitor with low response times that also does 4K, then that's their choice. But the world has evolved and that's why there are 4K gaming monitors nowadays. Otherwise, what's the point of companies pushing out these new products? As technology evolves, we should embrace and move forward with it.

            • @NovaAlpha: It's not beside the point, it is the point. Your "whataboutism" isn't relevant. 1080p is the most common screen res in use, and being bought by consumers. I've given the you the evidence of this, you can cry about 1080p being outdated all you want, but again, the stats show it's still the most popular screen resolution.

I've said nothing about what's better so I'm not sure why you're choosing to argue about progression of tech, I've only stated what's most common. Alongside this stat of it being the most popular resolution though, many people don't have GPU's capable of running 1440p or 4k screens at high settings, and most people would rather play their games at 1080p@max settings than a higher res and lower settings. Even those that do have GPU's capable of those resolutions, many would will trade fps for resolution.

@chunder: "1080p is the most common screen res in use" because most of the world are poor. There's a reason why most people aren't considered to be in the top 1%. If they can't afford a decent monitor and they want to keep living under a rock when it comes to the latest and greatest tech, then that's their choice and sucks to be them. Just because it's "popular" doesn't mean it's better. Toyota is a popular car brand and their cars on the road everywhere, but is it actually better than other brands? No. It's simply because most people are poor and can't afford Mercedes.

A 4K monitor with the same fps as a 1080p is just simply better. If you have a crappy GPU and can't handle 4K at 100fps or whatever, then downscale it back to 1080p. If you later upgrade to a GPU that supports 4K at 100fps, then you get to enjoy the game the way it's meant to be played. If you want to use the monitor at 4K res for watching TV shows or just general office work or whatever, then great you get to enjoy 4K instead of 1080p. Just because you get a 4K monitor, doesn't mean your FPS is going to take a hit. You just downscale it if you need to. But at least the monitor you got isn't strictly capped at 1080p res. Is the rest of the world so poor that they can't even move on from 1080p? What a joke.

FPS doesn't always matter either. There are more console gamers than PC gamers. If you game on a PS5, then fps doesn't really matter because you have no control over it. If you consistently hit a low fps, are you gonna take out the GPU and put in a new one? No, because it's not a PC. The issue is simply down to poor game optimization and you can't do anything about it. On a PS5, the highest fps you'd be able to hit is probably around 120. How is a monitor at 1080p and 165hz useful here, compared to a monitor that does at least 1440p at 120hz? Again, most gamers are console gamers and fps on a console is pretty much moot compared to fps on PC. The only thing you can change on a PS5 is probably just the SSD and that's it. Everything else is pretty much fixed and so you literally have no control over the fps.

Besides, most people would be comfortable with consistent 60~90fps - so having a monitor that does 165hz at 1080p is not really any better than a monitor that does 1440p at 100fps. A monitor that supports really high refresh is really only good for primarily shooter games, mostly competitive ones.

                • @NovaAlpha:

"1080p is the most common screen res in use" because most of the world are poor.

Cool, so you agree? The reasons why 1080p is the most common screen res doesn't change anything. There's lots of other reasons like the fact it's almost impossible to get a 24" 1440p screen, as well as the fact 1080p screens offer faster refresh rates.

You're really throwing out strawmans here and arguing an opinion that higher resolutions are better. None of what you're saying matters or impacts the fact 1080p is the standard resolution both in use, and by choice of people buying monitors, and therefore your comments/implication that it's outdated simply isn't true.

Keep being upset about it though, nothing you say changes it. Your opinions don't matter when it comes to facts.

                  https://www.gadgetreview.com/what-size-monitors-do-pro-gamer…

                  Standardized in Tournament Settings

You will find rows and rows of 24-inch monitors at most professional gaming tournaments. This means that pro gamers are essentially forced into using 24-inch monitors while they practice, as they know they will have to use them when glory is on the line. The resolution is also standardized at 1080p. For pros, there is no point in practicing on an ultra-wide, 36-inch, 4k 240hz monitor if the tournament will not offer the same experience.

                  Bye.

                  • -2

@chunder: LOL, why would I be upset that people like you can't afford a 4K monitor with high refresh?

Your logic is completely flawed because you're assuming that the majority of the world choose to stay on 1080p due to the need for having high fps or whatever. How many gamers out there are actually professional players who participate in tournaments? Not to mention that shooter games is just one of many sub-genres of gaming categories. Most of the games out there don't have such strict requirement on high fps.

Gamers who use 1080p monitors with high refresh rate are just a small minority. Most gamers are console gamers and a monitor with high fps > 100 won't even matter much when you're playing PS5 games.

It's fine if you can't afford 4K monitors, but trying to argue that most of the world using 1080p monitors do so because of exactly the points you've made, it's just dumb and desperate.

See you in 2050 when you get to use a 4K monitor.

                    Bye.
