Projecta 8A 12V 6 Stage Smart Battery Charger SMC800 $59 (Was $119) @ Bunnings

50

Seems like a cheaper deal for a battery charger. Previous similar deal for a CTEK 12V 5 Amp Battery Charger Value Pack - 40-516 $127.20 + $8.50 Shipping / $0 CC @ Repco so seems like good value.

I think this model is possibly made just for Bunnings.

Suits 12V Automotive, Marine and Deep Cycle batteries
LCD Display indicates charge status, current voltage and charge type
Safe and simple, comes with spark-free and polarity protected alligator clip harness, safe to use while the battery is still in the vehicle
Interchangeable fused wiring harness included for permanent installation

Projecta SMC800 is a compact and robust battery charger suitable for larger batteries found in passenger vehicles and 4WD’s. With an adjustable current (2A or 8A) simply connect and forget with no risk of overcharging the SMC800 maintains the battery ready for use.

  • I saw this and wondered how I will ever be able to use it. It's pretty much just for car batteries. If I encounter a once a decade flat battery I'll just get a family member to jump start it for me and go for a drive.
Chances are if I ever end up needing one it would have rusted and broke already…….

It's good to have one of these, as driving around to charge your battery isn't efficient and cost fuel and time. Good battery chargers like the CTEK will charge your battery in a smart way and trickle charge towards the end to not degrade battery health. It's the same kinda behaviour as phone charging, where it'll charge rapidly when the battery is below e.g. 50%, and then charge a bit slower when it reaches towards 80% or so. It doesn't charge your phone phone at max wattage from 0~100%.

Furthermore, people use these to keep their batteries charged while they go on holiday. No need to bother friends family members to come by your house just to drive the car around. Keep the car in the garage, hook up these chargers and it will just trickle charge every now and then to make sure your car battery doesn't run out of juice by the time you get back.

I've had a few instances where my car battery died (because of electrical issues with the car, not with the battery). Hooking one of these up overnight charged the battery back to 90% and it beats having to drive around aimlessly. For $59, this amount of money is nothing and it's just good to have something in your garage.

Bunnings (and other places) also sell portable battery bank jumpstarters. That's worth getting too, as it not only acts as a battery bank for your phones, but also gives it enough power to jump start the car with a push of a button. It's self-service really and again, it saves you time and effort from having to call a friend, wait around, then go through that jump starting process.

      • Do you have any recommendation for a decent, affordable and compact battery jump starters? Cheers

        • I'm not an expert in this field and I rarely needed to jumpstart my car. Having said that, this is what I use:

I think I got it for $80 when it was on sale at Bunnings. Decent reviews. It's only 2500mah I believe, which isn't a lot for a battery bank, but it does the job well. I've used it maybe 3 times to help friends jumpstart their cars and it worked every time the first go. It just gives it so much voltage boost on the first jumpstart. I keep it charged every 6~8 months and it retains the battery capacity well. There are probably better options out there with more features. For me, I just needed something simple, extremely portable and lightweight and that I can keep it in the car in case I need to use it for emergency.

          • @NovaAlpha: Thank you, I'm also looking for something simple, compact and retains charge well, Cheers bro.

It also seems to come with 3 Year Replacement warranty.

        • Not the noco from supercheap - super slow to charge as they still only have micro USB on it and barely passes 7 watts when charging. My last one that was killed when I lent it to someone who left it flat would charge off USB C and take 30 watts for most of the charge, and would also output a lot more when charging a phone than the pathetic 5v of the nocos full sized A port with no quick charge at all.

          • @richms: Im interested in the Ozito 400 Amp Jump Starter from Bunning warehouse, just waiting for the price drop.

I saw the supercheap one and the reviews were piss poor, thanks for the heads up man.

  • For the low price it seems like a good deal. Good brand, specs, and long 5 year warranty. :). Thou please note Cheapies it states it's only for 12v DC "lead acid chemistry type batteries". (I trust that includes A.G.M vehicle & Deep Cycle types). So definately not for suitable for the new Lithium chemistry batteries. ( It appears also it maybe not be able to be manually switched between the various battery types, but is fully sensing "automatic" for this. Not so clear in the manual on that point. (?)). I may order one as a back up charger for my automotive battery needs and my power supply backup AGM Deep Cycle batteries).

    • "For charging 12 Volt lead acid batteries ONLY (SMC400 6/12 Volt)" - that seems to be for a different model number, SMC400 not this SMC800?

    • (Oh. Further research shows some confusing different info between Aus and NZ products / model numbers. Unfortunately for us, for Aussie customers only its confusing: the Projecta website seems to say a nice long 5 year Projecta warranty. The product model manual says only 1 year thou !. But for us Kiwis in NZ it's stated as only that rather stingy 1 year, both the NZ Distributor and Bunnings NZ . :( ).

  • Ordered one online. :) . Seems this specific model is largely exclusive to Bunnings. So couldn't find any valid straightforward Price Beat offer elsewhere. E.g : Mitre10 15% beat.

  • (Northside - Auckland: Out of stock Glenfield. Northshore - Constellation Drive branch may still have stock).
