Not sure it's really a deal, considering it's just their typical 15% price match policy that has always been there. Same goes for Bunnings, they do 15% price match as well.

And one of the comments from the Briscoes 50% sale Cheapies post already mentioned price matching at Mitre10. If we get a price match deal for every Briscoes item that is sold at Mitre10, then it'll just become unnecessary spam at that point. I dunno, just my 2cents.

Its a great deal they a usually over $10 ea!

Clearly I've been living under a rock since this is the first time I've ever heard of this "sodastream" thing.
Now even at this 15% +50% briscoe price. + cost of gas canister you are still literally paying more per liter vs store bought if we are talking about the pepsi.
That's not even taking into consideration cost of water and the initial machine investment
So why is this company not bankrupt yet?
    Enlighten me!!!!

    • Cos stream goes brrrpssh

    • save the planet, use less plastic bottles, and so forth

      • +1

But…the gas bottles are refilled in Australia

    • Cause sodastream is great much cheaper than buying coke all the time when you can just make it at home.

      • +2

It literally isn't which was the entire point of my comment.
If you have the maths prove me wrong

Sure. I have an external tank which costs $60 to refill 3.2kg and produces (based on Sodastream's numbers) 426L of fizzy. Or $0.14 per L for C02. The external tank lasts half a year and paid for itself after one use, have been using it for years now.

This deal has 9L of Pepsi for $0.53 per L.

So $1.005 for 1.5L of pepsi.

The cheapest price for pepsi in NZ across all Pak'nSave stores is $1.99. So using Sodastream is 49.5% less cost than the cheapest price for Pepsi in NZ.

Now the half price deal doesn't always come through so I buy about $100 or so of syrup and it lasts. We often buy the Ginger Beer or other cheaper syrups per L which in this deal comes to $0.40/L for the syrup.

And before you say 'but I can buy for $0.99 for 1.5L' again, can you please show me an example of the last few months for this? Not since cost of living crisis has Pepsi been that cheap for Wellington region unfortunately.

          • @Aiden: external tank?

          • +1

@Aiden: 850 litres of soda a year? Thats a lot of saved 1.5l bottles!

          • @Aiden: Even cheaper if you figure out how to refill the c02 tanks thru the unofficial channels

            • @Vishnu Masala: yes there are adapters for that, and co2 is co2, as long as its food grade i suppose.

              • @wearnes: @wearnes @Aiden where do you get the food grade CO2 cylinders?

                • @GermanKiwi: Lookup beer brewing, you'll find tons of advice.

You can get bottle swaps from the likes of coregas, eziswapgas.

Sometimes people will offload bottles on Facebook cheaply.

There's tanktesk in wiri (ak), not sure of other small bottle refillers… Another thing to research would be fish tank co2 setups.

Many people run old co2 fire extinguishers for co2.

          • @Aiden: Note that lNomNoml said coke. If we take this to mean Coca-cola, then it's even worse. Best price for Coca-cola nowadays is I think 2x2.25L for $5. I don't know why you'd compare to buying coke since Pepsi is cheaper and it's quite difficult to get post-mix Coca-cola syrup but still, if we take the comparison literally, quite hard for Sodastream not to come out on top

          • @Aiden: Can you show your setup? I've been looking at making sparkling water using kits

    • +1

Where are you buying pepsi for under 93c a litre?

      • Local paknsave have it on special at times for 99c 1.5L

        • Interesting yours is still doing that. In West Auckland it used to be common 2-3 years ago, not just PakNSave but also Countdown. Then the best seemed to be $1.25. Then it went to $1.50. From what I've seen best now might be $1.75 or maybe even $1.90. It's one of the reasons I started to use my Sodastream a lot more. (To be fair there was a $2 for 2L i.e. same as $1.50 for 1.5L a few months back. But only once in several months and more significantly no one near me stocks the 2L sugar-free Mountain Dew which is what I was after so it was irrelevant to me.)

L&P $1 deal has also been replaced with $1.50 although at least that's sticking with $1.50 for now

    • It is more about variety and convenience.

      • I drink both cheap soda from PnS as well as sodastream. It is more expensive but agree re variety and convenience. I'm still using cylinders I got for really cheaply by trading in the obsolete older type, and I always get the syrups by price match from M10

    • Must be a massive rock you're under!

  • Does briscoes do half price refill?

    • +1

Yes, this is the time to buy

  • What if I buy the syrups but just add into sparkling water? Any significant difference? Machine seems expensive..

    • you can still do that but be careful when you pour the syrups in cos if you pour in too quick it will overflow, same with adding syrup to sodastream'd bottles

    • Do you like flat soft drinks? (E.g. 2-3 days after opening.) If you do, then this should fine. If you don't well this is what you're making so I think you have your answer. I mean some of their flavours are a bit less soft drinky but still, they're targeting that market.

  • Reduced to clear Henderson had sugar free sodastream syrups at 6 for $6 this week. They are past best before but I thought it was worth a punt

    • Problem with sugar free past best before is some sweeteners, especially aspartame, have very short half-lifes at room temperature. The acidic nature of soft drinks helps with stability, still it's probably under a year and I wonder if syrups might be outside of ideal pH range given the concentration. However with syrups you could use more to get a suitable sweetness. The flavour will change but it might not be as bad as regular soft drinks which I've found even at 3 months past BB often don't taste so good.

      • They taste bad to me as early as one month before the best before.

  • Wow!

  • Bit weird you got $4.80. I got $4.89 which is what I'd expect. Or $4.88 if they round down. I did from 3 different Mitre10 beginning of the year and IIRC all were that price. I mean although our smallest denomination is 10 cents, it doesn't stop vendors doing .99 prices as we well know, and if paying electronically or buying 10 no matter what their rounding at check out is the .88/.89 vs .80 makes a difference to final price even if paying in cash. And I sorta assumed this is automatic once they enter in the other vendor price so no way it could vary. Wonder if the person doing it typoed the Briscoes price as $5.65?
