    How did you find flying with China Southern? Would you recommend it for the price over Singapore Airlines?

      Happy with China Southern considering it is just $1k and you get full service airline. Food was good, seat was fine and good selection of entertainment. The only downside for me was transiting through Guangzhou Baiyun Airport - censored internet (can't check emails or message anyone), and limited food available at the airport. Apart from there, would be more than happy to fly with them again.

        Add an e-sim on your phone (plenty of choice on the cheapies), any data pack including China would pass the censorship as your IP will be based on your sim provider.
        For example, I generally use 3HK https://www.three.com.hk/prepaid/DIY/en/offer/travel/ HK$268 (equivalent to NZ$58) for 365 days 40GB + 5GB Social Data as I frequently travel back to China. 1 day pass starting from HK$10 (equivalent to NZ$2) would be great for you just use for transit in Guangzhou.
