I use the free version of AdGuard dns on my iPhone. Happy with it
    https://adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html

    • Method 2.

  • Interesting, if this implemented as a DNS or a VPN? I’m already using Tailscale on all my family’s devices VPN settings and wondering if I could use both..

If it is DNS based as blocking, the same ad blocking results can be achieved with either setting up a local PiHole instance, or even simpler, a free service like NextDNS. It also has apps for all platforms and super easy to setup and use.

    • you can manage controls via app in windows, mac, andriod, tv

It's not DNS based, it creates a local VPN and filters traffic that way.

  • If you have Android you can get the APK for this app for free. I use it on my phone and it's great.

    • i went down this route, since i use the service alot i thought i should contribute something.

I'd be seriously concerned installing something like this on my phone.

    Who pays for adblocking lol.

The only adblocker you need uBlock (https://ublockorigin.com/)
I use this and No Script (https://noscript.net/) for the last 5-10yrs.

(only Downside is it takes a while to build your site preferences but in like a year of use you'll have custom lists that you just export/backup and then import to any new device)

Either that or get into pihole

Or install adguard/pihole in docker and use it on the router. No need to worry on each devices. Get the whole network protection.

Running adguard on my proxmox mini pc and router is pointing to it. Whole network protection for free. You can do the same for pihole

Yep agreed with ace310 & other comments. Selfhosting AdGuard home is very good option and gives powerful filtering and rewrite capabilities with a nice UI. Running DNS locally + the cache means blazing fast DNS as well. It has been a great experience for me running it on an RPi4 with backup on my virtualisation host.

You can also install the binaries on something like a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter so it runs directly on the router (there are caveats with log file size and so on, but all info is online for free with the right googling).

The theoretical advantage of the app is the filtering/rule capabilities but without running a separate host to run the DNS server. Since this runs as a VPN there is the implication of if you 'trust' AdGuard. You can also do a lot of filter rules on Android via uBlock on Firefox.

Public adblocking DNS servers probably just gets you 99% of the way, just without all the extra filtering and blocklists you may wanna add (if you care about those things that is).

There's all sorts of things you can do for free to get an ad free experience across many platforms like running ReVanced on Android, adding other filters to uBlock etc.
