Chromecast with Google TV 4K $74 + Shipping ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ PB Tech

140

Decent deal for a very useful product. Now discontinued to be replaced by a Google streamer (not sure of NZ pricing but I suspect more than this).

Seems to be on sale (as is the HD version) most places: https://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=5549884

The new Google TV streaming product will likely be $199+ here(120 Euro, $99 USD) when it comes out, its 2 weeks away for the US but no NZ/AU date set yet iirc.

    • Available now for $179(still expensive compared to a Firestick 4k), free shipping at pbtech or same price at jbhifi.

  • Any streaming device gurus out there? Had no idea Chromecast was going obsolete, what are the risks involved in buying this now?
It's a couple years old tech but it surely should do the job of streaming Plex, Netflix, Youtube, Disney+ etc. well right?

It will be fine and won't go obsolete quickly. Is user friendly and easy to set up. Certainly worth it for the cost, as I find it better than most built in apps on smart TVs, while a cheaper option than NVIDIA Shield Pro which is the best current option.
Likely will get even cheaper as they sell out the old stock when the new one launches too.

4k is quite capable for most of the streaming. I use it for Plex, Netflix, youtube, apple tv+ etc.
I would grab this one before it goes out of stock if you want something discrete hooked up behind the TV. The new streamer is supposed to be placed on a table which means all of the people having their wall mounted tvs without any console will be hard to accommodate it easily (Probably you can still hide it behind depending on space but not sure how well it will work).

    • Quite low cost so not much to loose
The google ones have the most apps and best interface and seem quite quick compared to the completion.

I have a Fire Stick 4k too but it is missing a few nz exclusives but for most people they are fine.

I just bought a Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max for $69 a few weeks ago to replace my CCwGTV. It is more powerful, specifically it can passthru lossless audio (Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X, etc) while CCwGTV can't.

It also runs Android so can do everything CC can. It doesn't have Chromecast obviously but I hadn't have the need to use that feature for a while now.

    • so can do everything CC can

doenst have playstore though, uses fire app store, so does not have all the apps

      • As someone who uses a vpn for overseas TV apps the fire stick is much easier to load up with international apps from the store and for the uk in particular it has all the apps that i couldn't access on Google devices.

      • As @Everettpsycho mentioned, it's actually easier to install international apps on Fire TV. You can change the app store country easily and without limitation (You can only change Google Play Store region once a year). Plus you can always sideload things.

    • Can you share
Where i will get firetv 4k max for 69
I am also looking for the same from long time

It was a sale at Harvey Norman during the last week of Aug. Price has gone back now.

I have one of these and it is now a paperweight. The remote burns through batteries with 2x AAA lasting less than a week. so it is destined for the bin. Apparently this is a known issue but no remedy. YMMV!

    • +1

The remedy is returning to the retailer for a new unit as its not fit for purpose and faulty. It's why we have the CGA that extends beyond the stated warranty.

A factory reset of the chromecast had fixed battery issues for several people too. Sometimes it's the remote itself(ie water/liquid damage/battery fluid or a short) or the fact people are using 2x1.2V AA instead of 2x1.5V AA etc.

      • +1

Nothing wrong with 1.2v rechargeables. I have been using eneloops in 2 of this. Batteries last around 7-10 months without issues. So most likely faulty remote or bad batteries.

    • I'll take it off your hands if it's heading for the bin

    • That's a shame. No battery issues for mine.

    • Provided its not a faulty batch of batteries with half the charge or something. It should last between 2-3 years reasonably given the price.

Bought one, thanks! Great for Stremio

    • Does stremio work with ‘extensions’ on google TV?

      • no idea. I have LG which doesn't allow you to download the app through their service. But with chromecast it works like a charm.
