Applying credit card is a pain process, but spending 2 hours to get 350? I will do it

Buy pak n save / countdown (or any supermarket) gift cards and then use them slowly, prebuy fuel (sharetank) :)

      • Can also buy Sharesies gift cards to make up the remainder of your spend (though there is a processing fee)

        • Thanks this is really helpful, any other savvy ways of artificial spend?

  • The minimum credit limit is $8000. It would be tough to get, so it won't be worth the time spent trying to convince them.

Woah.. ANZ gives 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $110 but the no annual fee amex card gives 100 spend = 1 Airpoints Dollar.

Amex platinum gives $59 spend = 1 Airpoints Dollar

Actually, Amex Platinum gives 300 bonus Airpoints Dollars when you apply, are approved and spend $1,500 on your new Card within the first 3 months. New Card Members only. With annual fee $195 p.a.

    See https://www.americanexpress.com/nz/credit-cards/airpoints-ca…

ANZ seems like a bad deal.

    • Unfortunately from 03 Oct 2024, the rate will be changed to 1 Airpoint for every $70 spend. Still better than ANZ, but we'll be losing that juicy 1:59 rate very soon…

      • Mid Feb for many of us too for the rate changes

        • Oh thought it was early Oct for everyone, interesting that some have it till mid feb, that's good I guess, spend more this Christmas lol

Did you have to ask or just got it?

          • @Goldshot: I just got an email stating it for me. Didn't ask.

Is it bad for your credit score to open and close credit cards for these sign up bonuses?

    • yes, but credit scores easily recover and in NZ, credit scores are not relied on as much.
if you need to buy a house, best to close all unused cards to increase the loanable amount.

  • Just days after my AMEX annual card fee 😭 I would of switched over otherwise.

    • You get still get the free refunded within 30 days

  • Amex turned me down for the airpoints card so I'm looking at other options. This is better than the tsb one right? Already have my mortgages with anz too so that should help?

  • What the hell, I just got approved like 3 weeks ago..

They haven’t had a deal like this for at least a couple of years now, I had been patiently waiting but gave up and signed up at the end of last week as we wanted to book a holiday.
Rang them and asked if this offer could be applied to our card as we haven’t actually received it yet and they obliged so that was a win, thanks for posting OP.

Do you have to go through a long process to get this card? Like phone calls where they ask about your spending?

Thats the only thing putting me off swapping my Amex plat Airpoints card.

    • curious as to why you are thinking about switching from Amex? I am in the same boat and also have a mortgage with ANZ. But still think the AMEX benefits are better?

  • Just curious if anyone has done the math between this card and AMEX Plat Airpoints?

AMEX has been good for me, but there have been some big purchases over the years that didn't allow AMEX. I have a mortgage with ANZ, so thinking I should switch.
Also think switching would lose the two lounge passes, as I couldn't find ANZ offering anything similar.

I'm in the same boat as you. Ended up deciding to keep the amex for the better earn rates ,lounge passes, travel insurance, phone screen insurance etc.

But are the perks worth not being able to use it everywhere. I dunno

I'm in the same boat, the AMEX is definitely better even at $70 spend rate, for 30K spend per year, I'd earn $428 from AMEX assuming no fee since we already have it, but only $202 from ANZ including the $75.

Now if someone has neither card I'd say ANZ is better.

What's crazy is ASB is better regardless, would earn $250 including their fees.

Now the $350 offer does make up for it, but considering the $75 fee payable and $200 benefit to having AMEX rewards instead, I'd say 50/50.

But in saying that I'm sick of AMEX - you never know who takes it, and no google pay, etc.

    • I would say, easier just got the points and leave, no need to do math lols…

for anyone contemplating this. I got rejected for amex - really not sure why, high income and good savings.
I initially got rejected for this but the banker so it was more of a glitch and she got her manager to approve it.
Even though i'm an anz customer and i have all my home loans with them it still took 1 hour on the phone and then another half hour call so it's not fast (i do have accounts with two other banks which may have slowed it down)
If you;re with ANZ and in a rush to get it like me then don't apply online - that's an automatic 10 working days delay. Instead call up and ask to go through the process online. Just have all your expenses jotted down first.
    Overall very painless

    • I bank with ANZ and it was all done and approved in about 20 mins and got my new card within a week. Seemed a lot easier than last time I applied for a credit card.

  • Might be common knowledge, but when applying they have visibility on other cards you've got with other banks (just in case you 'forget' to declare…)
