Youtube Premium Turkey family plan - any workarounds?

Currently using the Turkey family plan for wife and kids mobile devices, TV and iPad etc. paid for with Wise. Looks like they're finally cracking down on it. Anyone know of any current working methods to get a cheaper family plan other than the $30 they're asking for here?

Email I received earlier:

  • What payment method are you using?

    Mine is still working fine

    • Wise virtual card.

It just renewed a couple of days ago, so I'm guessing it triggered some check on where it was issued

  • Yeah I just got this email today as well.

    • +1

I'm starting to feel like I don't want to give them my money any more (no matter how little it is). I'll see if anything pops up in the next month otherwise I might just cancel it

Everybody is getting this email. It is a worldwide crackdown.

  • +1

I also received this email today. They must really be cracking down on it. If only the NZ price wasn’t so high

  • I also got this email, on an account using Revolut.

  • Looks like this is only for Turkey memberships? Anybody from India, Argentina or other countries received this email? I have Indian membership and nothing so far.

    • On the ozbargain forums a couple of people have mentioned getting the same email for Argentina and Ukraine accounts

      • Yep, I got it for Argentina.

    • I don't have a problem with my Indian membership. The family plan price went up last month. Also, I am using my Indian credit card as the payment method

      • +2

Indian credit card, nice. How about you pay for my YouTube with it, and I pay you the cost +10% into your NZ bank?

    • My India membership (paid with ASB Visa) got cancelled. I was asked to agree to a price increase which I did but I still got the cancellation email this morning

  • Same here for Turkey with an ANZ credit

    Some alternative ad-free options:
NewPipe - Android and Android TV/box
SmartTube - Android TV/box, Fire Stick, NVIDIA Shield

SmartTube also has SponsorBlock built-in, so no more sitting through sponsored segments of videos. There's a forked version of NewPipe with SponsorBlock too.

There is no requirement to login to either application - you can subscribe to channels while signed out, so no need to manually type and search for videos and channels.

You can export your YouTube subscriptions list from your Google account and then import it into NewPipe. Instructions here. Unfortunately I don't believe there's any such function within SmartTube at the moment. You can just login to SmartTube with your Google account but I've avoided this for security reasons. Safest thing would probably be to set up a burner email account for it.

Looks like I have to do some research on what's available for workarounds, I've been reading up on reVanced a little. Smart tube looks interesting, I wonder if I can get it installed on my TV.

Does Newpipe also work for YouTube Music? That's probably the biggest loss for me.

      • +1

Revanced is vastly superior to newpipe. It is basically an exact replica of YouTube premium and there are no downsides. It is even better than YouTube premium because it has everything YouTube premium has and way more. It is extremely easy and simple to do once you get the hang of it.

There is also a revanced patch for YouTube music that I assume works well. I personally don't use YouTube music, I use Spotify instead.

The workarounds for YouTube are so easy and effective no one should be paying for premium if they are using YouTube on a laptop or android device.

        • Thanks. Does Revanced work with Spotify? I just need music streaming, I don't really mind changing to Spotify. It was just nice having everything done under one membership.

I'm going to try installing it this weekend and see how it goes.

          • @kinetic9: Revanced did have a spotify patch last time I checked but I don't know much about it because I use xmanager instead for Spotify.

  • +1

I did Mexico over the weekend. Just logged into Youtube, turned the VPN on to Mexico and then paid for my sub with my ANZ visa card.

It's $23NZD vs the previous $6 I was paying, but still better than ~$40 NZ pricing…..

    • I see $29.99 for the family plan in NZ. Is it the price increasing to $40?

      • It showed me $40, don’t know why

        • Now it shows $30 lol. Well i saved $6…..

  • +1

Are they cracking on family plan? I'm on individual plan and didn't get this email. Last payment was on 16 October though

    • Still yet to receive an email. Turkish family membership. $5.77 went out today.

  • +1

I got the email today. Mine is the family plan via Argentina. They are cracking down on all plans and regions.

I had the same problem. What worked for me is the Apple ID method - you need to make a Turkish Apple ID account & top it up using iTunes vouchers from Turgame. Then go in to your YouTube app on an iPhone and subscribe to the plan there. I believe they charge for a whole year at a time but I don’t remember.

If you want to further maximise your value you can sell your spare slots in OzBargain’s classifieds section. I sold two spare slots at $40AUD ea which pretty much covered the plan cost.

    • This might be my backup if I'm not happy with anything else. Kind of annoying but we'll see if they crackdown on that method closer to when my month is up.

  • +2

if you have an iPhone then you can create a Turkish ID and pay in itunes, I use a spare old phone and pay lira 75.99 or $3.69 for single account, buying gift cards to load into itunes but you may already know this method

    • With this method your phone is switched (and stuck on) to the Turkish App Store right? Which stops access to apps only available in our NZ AppStore eg (I'm guessing) The Warehouse?

      • +2

Nope. You just log into the Turkish account to top up with gift cards, then you can just log out and log back in with your NZ account. All the apps etc remain and update as per usual

      • Used the same method, but switched from Turkey to India since India was slightly cheaper.

  • +1

From a post I made in August. I've been using since then with no issues….

However, I may have found a new and still cheap way….. gamsgo.com

Essentially, it seems you're buying in to a New Zealand based YouTube family plan, they manage, with randoms. No VPN random sign up process needed. Just paid $40.14 for 6 months, so $6.69 per month. They also offer other subscription services too (Netflix, Spotify, Duolingo(?) etc.)

They give you a Youtube join link straight away. Needed a quick chat with their their online support to get up and running (had to delete the foreign payment profiles from my Google account) but I'm now back in the game with a Premium subscription.

From what I can see, although you can see the names and emails of the other randoms also joined to the shared plan they cant see your viewing history / access your account / change anything. Please correct me if my understanding of the family plan membership is wrong.

  • Can you just make a bank account in Turkey lol - as a Kiwi??!

    • You can get one through Wise. I have one linked to mine, though I am not sure how to use it for online payments once adding their currency, as the virtual cards generated are for my NZ account.

      • +1

I have one linked to mine as well, I also have a wise physical card. I updated my payment method in youtube to use the physical card instead of the virtual and Google did a temporary hold check in TRY currency. I wonder if that's enough to fool them, will have to wait and see next month.

        • Interesting. Did you load TRY on for it or just NZD?

My premium is via Argentina. I had Turkey setup for Netflix before they also started making that difficult. I have recently dumped it for Stremio with a Real-Debrid account as they started making sharing the account a pain.

Will be good if that works though. I really don't want to lose my Premium, mostly for Music, as I have a network level ad-blocker and work from home, so that would deal with YouTube itself.

          • +1

@CrusaderNZ: I usually load around 3 months of TRY currency at a time on it for youtube. There was still some on there, but the hold check was for 0 TRY anyway.

Honestly, I don’t mind losing it for YouTube, as there’s workarounds but losing Music will suck, unless I can find a way to get cheap Spotify.

I’ve switched to SmartTube on android/google tv and it seems to work perfectly fine. I can probably do revanced on the android devices, only going to lose it on my old iPad. Might just look for an android tablet on Black Friday or something

            • +2

@kinetic9: Sporify you can use google pay to be in turkey for a couple of bucks a month for a family. I also have tidal in Kenya as i prefer it over spotify but my partner likes spotify.

          • @CrusaderNZ: By the way, how are you finding Stremio + Real Debrid? I was thinking about it last night to try it out. We’ve never used Netflix anyway, just torrenting and Plex, but my Plex machine is getting old and can’t transcode 4K and I realised we don’t watch as much as we used to.

Does it have a decent amount of children’s shows? They use the TV more than me now lol

            • @kinetic9: I don't watch kids shows but it has most things via torrent, so you'd probably be okay.

I have used Real-Debrid for years but just on PC with jdownloader. I recently found out about Stremio and their recent release of it for LG TV's (2020 and up).

I was impressed with how well it worked in my OLED but LG's WebOS doesn't support Dolby Vision via mkv files, so last week I got one of those new Google TV Streamer boxes and paid $6 for an external video player called Vimu that can handle everything including the sound formats my TV and Soundbar don't support (DTS and True-HD).

Now I am really happy with it. Few quirks here and there but I am able to stream 80GB Blu-ray remixes without issue, which is pretty bloody good

Real-Debrid makes that possible, their servers are fast. Even when playing something that is old or obscure with a few seeders it just pulls it across to their servers and then streams it to you at full speed. Sometimes you might need to wait a little bit for that process but usually it is really fast

              • +1

@CrusaderNZ: Funny you mention the Google TV Streamer, as I literally picked one up yesterday to replace an aging Apple TV HD from almost 10 years ago. Got sick of not being able to install what I want with Apple devices even though I know the ATV 4k has much more grunt. Interesting that Vimu works with True-HD as there's a current bug where True-HD doesn't work with the streamer, there seems to be a few people posting online about it. I found the same that anything with True-HD through Plex would just freeze, even though my soundbar supports it.

A few hours before you replied I said screw it and started setting up Stremio and buying a Real-Debrid account, been playing around with setting it up all afternoon :)

                • +1

@kinetic9: I wasn't going to buy it because I read the same thing about True-HD, but others were saying they had no issues. I ran into that issue last week watching Blade Runner 2049 but got it to work after fiddling around with the sound settings in Vimu and I watched Batman (2022) last night with it on. I got a bug where it just freezes after 20 mins into remuxes and then I have to reload the video to get it to work again (Doesn't happen with TV so it is HD audio codecs that my Atmos soundbar doesn't natively support causing I think). I changed the buffer in Vimu to 500MB and it seems to mostly have taken care of it, despite the buffer showing as being at 100% before when it was freezing.

                  • @CrusaderNZ: That's interesting! I think I have some leftover Play credit, I might pick up Vimu and have a play with it.

There are a few Turkish virtual debit card providers. One of them (Ininal) allow foreigners to apply with just the passport and an international phone number. I read on reddit that not all countries can receive text validations but NZ is one of them. There are people on reddit buying One NZ eSIMs for this purpose and One NZ has been out of prepay eSIM for a while 🤣

Anyway I've applied for an Ininal account and will see how it goes.

You gave a copy of your passport to some outfit in Turkey?

Will be interested to hear how it goes…

      • They have existed since 2012 and is regulated by the central bank of Turkey. So I don't see your point here? Personally I'd trust them more than gift card sellers.

Yeah - I wouldn't be giving a copy of my passport to 'gift card sellers' either, but you do you :-)

    • I've just tried applying for one…their recaptcha is having issues. Probably some ssl certificate expired or something

    1. Try Alternative Payment Methods:
Virtual Turkish Cards: Some users have had success using virtual Turkish credit cards from services like OlduBil or Papara. These services issue Turkey-based cards that may work for payment.
Turkish Friends or Family: If you know someone in Turkey, you could ask them to use their payment method to help you maintain the subscription. You can reimburse them through PayPal or Wise.
    2. Use a VPN and Set a New Google Account in Turkey:
Use a VPN to connect to a server in Turkey and create a new Google account with a Turkish location.
Purchase Google Play gift cards in Turkish lira (TRY) and add them to your Google Play balance.
Use that balance to pay for YouTube Premium on the new account. (Make sure the VPN is active during signup.)
    3. Switch to Individual YouTube Premium via Another Country:
Argentina or India still offer cheaper YouTube Premium plans. Use a VPN to sign up with an Argentine or Indian account if the Turkish route becomes unfeasible.
Note that Google Play cards from these countries might also work to top up the account for payment.
    4. Use Localized Family Plan Alternatives:
Explore other streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) for family plans, which might be cheaper or more lenient in your region.
Alternatively, Apple One offers a bundle of services at a more reasonable price, including Apple Music, iCloud, and others.
    5. Consider the YouTube Premium Lite Plan:
YouTube also offers a Premium Lite plan in some regions, providing ad-free viewing at a lower cost, though without features like offline downloads and YouTube Music.
If none of these workarounds fit, you may need to migrate to a local plan, but timing your switch before November 21 is key to avoid any service interruptions.
    • Wouldn't waste you time setting it up in another country, they are doing this to all of them. Mine is in Argentina.
