Waste of money, you're far better off buying an original Nespresso machine.

These aren't compatible with original Nespresso pods, and only Nestle makes the Vertuo pods that are currently $11 - $17 per 10 pack and as far as I know only available from their website. https://www.nespresso.com/nz/en/order/capsules/vertuo

It might be a cheap initial purchase but it's going to end up costing you a helluva lot more than a standard Nespresso machine to use.

    • If you are making just espresso shots (like the original Nespresso) Vertuos are not as expensive as you may think.

Usual pods for Nespressos are around 60-80c per pod at local supermarkets, and they make a single shot. So for usual double shot of coffee that I make, I need to use two pods. which are $1.2 - $1.6 per coffee

The Vertuo pods are larger then the originals and they are double shot by default. So the Scuros that I usually drink are 1.39 per pod, and they make the double shot espressos.

In the end if you go for cheaper pods in the Nespressos it may be cheaper, by about 10% however if you buy usual ones that may cost similar if not more.

Also, the vertuo pods are much much more easier to re-fill then the Original nespressos, just save up the cups of the nespresso ones, and buy the sticker that goes on top of those used cups. I usually refill a bunch and re-use the cups if want to save some.

      • The thing is that the original Nespresso pods can be produced by 3rd party manufacturers meaning that you can get them cheaper, like Caffesso pods for example that you can currently get for $5 per 10pk, or a 100 pack of Perfetto pods for $44.99 from Kogan NZ.

Most people buy pod machines because they're quick and easy to use, if you're going to be messing around filling your own pods you're better off just buying a normal coffee machine aren't you? Then you don't have to stuff around reusing pods and buying stickers or whatever. We have a Sunbeam Cafe Barista, and once you find the right grind and get your tampering sorted it's pretty much idiot proof when it comes to making perfect Lattes and Cappuccinos.

        • Original Nespresso pods are way too expensive IMHO.
they cost about $1 each and they pack only half the coffee as the Vertuos.

And yes you can cheaper pods buying in bulk and via online as well (we are cheapies lol) Which may lower the pod price from 60c a pop to 45c a pop.

It is definitely cheaper to run the original Nespresso machines if using the cheaper pods. However I have had mixed experience using the lower end pods being a bit hit and miss. Nespresso pods are very consistant in their quality and have proper nitrogen filled pods which retain their freshness for longer time. Nespressos do buy 100 capsule and get 10 free (sometimes 160/20) which also makes it about 10% cheaper as well.

Overall, if using the Nespresso made pods, Vertuos are much cheaper to use as it uses less capsule to make the same amount of coffee. However if using the 3rd party pods, it can be up to 20% cheaper to run the original Nespresso machines compared to the Vertuos using the Nespresso capsules.

For the re-filling, I am comparing from the original Nespresso capsules to Vertuos. Vertuos are much easier and cheaper to re-fill compared to the originals, however this defeats the premium we pay for the ease of use.

          • @mingyu01: Fair points, but I should point out that the prices I quoted for the original pods were just examples I found that were available to buy today, when Kogan or The Warehouse have them on deep sale or there are flash sales on Amazon you can pick them up for around 30c per pod or even less.

I stand by my view that Vertuo machines are a waste of money and if you're looking at buying a pod machine you're far better off with an original Nespresso.

            • @Flippant: You need this deal to come back around for 10 cent pods.

              https://www.cheapies.nz/node/31025

When we had a nespresso i did consider refillable pods but ultimately ended up using the aeropress much more with the cheap bodum bistro grinder, reserving the nespresso for milk based drinks. Eventually decided to get a good machine and doesn't feel like it takes much longer in the morning than the nespresso used to now we are used to it and the routine.

              • @Everettpsycho: Yeah we've moved on from the pod machines as well. After trying a few different machines over the years we settled on a Sunbeam Cafe Barista mainly because of its smaller size and ease of use. You grind your beans and put them in the portafilter then press one button walk away and when you come back you've got a perfect latte made with real milk sitting there ready to drink.

We got our one as a brand new unwanted gift on Trade Me for $40 including a separate grinder, but they're only just over a couple of hundred bucks new and crazy good for the price. If you can find a cheap grinder it's a happy medium between the smaller cheap and easy to use pod machines and the larger more expensive coffee machines like the Breville Barista's.
