Damn, was hoping for a free one.

Is it me, or does Trademe feel a bit needy nowadays, with the constant promotions for discounted success fees, etc.?

Not a lot of people are buying things now a day

I'm just about over Trade Me, their fees are just greedy af now. Yes you get the odd scammers etc on FB Marketplace, but they're not too hard to spot & navigate around. Seem to get much more interest off there than paying through the nose on TM!

I and I think a lot of people now only list on TM during it's free listing promotional periods and at all other times list on FB Marketplace. I agree, the scammers are easy to spot and you don't lose any time to them as you can field interest/offers from all potential buyers at the same time and sell immediately, whereas with TM you typically wait a week for the item to sell to a single buyer and then if they don't follow through with the purchase then you've lost a whole week to that process. Not at all worth it if you have to pay any type of fees for that experience.

The issue with FB Marketplace is with high-value items, like a gaming laptop. With such items you can filter out the scammers, but since pretty much no one pays in advance with FB Marketplace and pick-up is usually the only realistic option, you're just asking to get mugged.

Trademe is a trusted marketplace and buyers usually don't hesitate to pay in advance for goods.

            @Avantime: I'm a night owl myself, but who does exchanges/pickups at 1am?

          • @Avantime: That's why I stick with TM, they are a middleman. FB is the wild west

The company that owns TradeMe has often held businesses for the short-term, with the intention of quick gains upon sale. TradeMe has also been increasing their fees associated with property marketing (quite significantly, with little rebuke due to their monopoly in that industry). It would not surprise me if the ever-increasing discounted fee weekends are being used to bump up their internal stats and numbers, with the intention of looking better when the time comes to sell the company.

  • I have never, ever sold a single thing when listed during a free selling or 50% off selling week. Pretty confident this is not a coincidence but I can't prove it.

    • There is more competition selling similar thing in those weeks. If you’re trying to buy something, it’s a great time to look at what was listed on the free day.

Having said that, I sold 2 things on a previous free selling day, but they were decent quality items.

    • Have sold a few items with no fees but mainly it gets me off my arse to list stuff I've been meaning to listnfor ages.

Even if it doesnt sell then i relist it and pay fees if it sells later so damn they got me but then the item probably would be sitting around here unlisted so in the end its a win-win.

    • Anything with $1 reserve will sell.

    • I have had 2 listings sell today and sold things almost every other time there was a promotion. Ultimately depends on your pricing and if there is any demand. I always notice people listing things at absurd prices during these promotions. If you do things right, it is a good way to clear out the garage.

  • I can't wait for this platform to fade away.

    It gets worse every year.

    • But the alternatives are worse, they aren't going anywhere.

      • I do not think the average punter is trying to sell things for $5K each and it is not like Facebook Marketplace is going to be worth trying to sell something of that value. I tried listing a car on Facebook and it was 10x worse than on Trade Me.

However, the distinction between a business seller and personal seller need to be made, any one with their own product business should not solely rely on Trade Me, especially with all the fee increases (it is higher for business seller to sell on Trade Me vs personal sellers). Anyone slow to adapt is causing their own problem, i.e. not setting up their own eCommerce website.
