  • Got this last time, my setup is flawless now and I pay a total of $65/yr to have the equivalent of every streaming service

    • a little more detail please :)

      • Okay so the two paid components are (for me) Eweka and NZBGeek, Eweka is a Usenet provider and is essentially the file hoster, NZBGeek is an indexer and allows you (or the below automation programmes) to search for things. To link everything together and automate it all you need Sonarr (for TV shows), Radarr (for movies), SABNZBD (download client), and Plex (media server) all free. On my phone I have an app NZB360 which makes it easy to add stuff from your phone. If you aren't tech savvy it's probably a bit difficult to get setup, for example you have to add API keys, add IP addresses between the various services etc. It's not too bad but there's no way my mum could do it lol

You can also do the same thing entirely free with torrents, but Usenet is much better imo as it's faster and more reliable.

The end result is that I add whatever show or movie I want in my phone, it downloads at around 160Mbps, and then it just appears on my TV in the Plex app when it's done.

        • Have a look at Overseerr, it's a really nice front end for requesting media that hooks into Plex, Radarr & Sonarr.

It can import your Plex users so they have their own account, it can even read in your Plex watchlist and automatically request the media from there; there's not even any need to log into a separate web app for it (altho the web interface is pretty slick and nice to use)

      • There are lots of guides on Reddit. But have a look at this. There are many ways to setup automated media server. It's a never ending rabbit hole, but once you get hang of it, not that difficult to accomplish this.

    • And it doesn't even need to cost a dime if you're happy with the slightly less reliable public sites. I'm running a host of services via Docker but the main ones being Plex, Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, Overseerr and qBitTorrent which automatically download any movie/TV series I want as soon as they're available along with letting my friends/family do the same through a neat looking UI.

Never paid for a streaming service and never will, if it's available digitally then it's available for free on some torrent site and with the correct setup you can have your own easy to run streaming service. The only thing I pay for is a domain so mates can easily remember the URL but that's not necessary

Personally I don't see any reason to get Plex Pass, the only feature I could see myself using often enough would be the skip intros feature which makes the cost of it not really worth it.

      • Well the best feature would be hw transcoding with Plex pass. Unless you are using plex only with direct streaming or only have 1080p library where all clients can play directly.

        • That and skipping intros and credits

        • Yeah I can imagine that's a big sell for most. I run mine on a Pi4 and with some user conditioning and being smart about codecs haven't had any issues with occasionally needing to rely on software transcoding
