Recomendation for a Cheapish 40+ Inch TV with 4k and Smart Apps Like YouTube/Netflix, and Works with Wi-Fi etc

I'm looking for a cheapish TV for my garage room for the kids to use while they have friends over. My experience of smart TVs is limited to Samsung, but I've read that Google TV is better. They will be hooking up laptops and consoles usual HDMI ports would be needed. I'm in Auckland to picking up or delivery is not really an issue.

Would anyone have any recommendations, please?

  • I have this from TW and it's been great so far, good enough wifi connection to stream games through the Steam Link app, all of the apps work (TVNZ was broken a while ago but has been fixed). They do sales on them semi regularly but it looks like the 55" model is currently cheaper. https://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/p/veon-50-inch-4k-ultra-hd-go…

    • What chip set,ram and android tv version does it have?

One of the main concern is the horrendous lag when using these Smart TVs because of weak sauce hardware.

    • Cheers. Does look like 55 is better value right now.

  • There are a few Philips TV models at PB Tech which are on special at the moment and they have Google TV. No idea about quality or the lag so check out the reviews:

      Dont expect too much lol.
They are very much built to a cost
Personally i would pair it with a set top box like google tv instead.

Have you considered getting a cheap "dumb" TV and hooking up a Chromecast or similar for YouTube/Netflix?

    • wondering if the cost of both is pretty much the same these days.

Yeah but it is much cheaper to upgrade a Chromecast in 3-5yrs when the software is getting slow, rather than replacing your whole tv

        • Great point. Never looked at it like that before.

  • Waitangi is coming up if you can wait a few weeks there may be sales

Get a cheap TV at the size annd resolution you want and don’t worry about the software. Grab a TV stick like Chromecast with Google TV or Amazon Firestick to drive it. I nabbed my parents old tv when they replaced it, and run the Chromecast and it’s great. Plug it into the HDMI-CEC socket and the remote that came with the TV will control the stick.
