  • Gosh, that's a lot of hoops for 50 bucks. Good for those who actually need this service though.

  • Love free money! Worth the few mins to sign up. Thank you!

  • Does anyone know if there's any fees associated to an everyday account + the Westpac Debit Mastercard®? Only fee I could see is the Mastercard one — which is free for the first year (so will cancel before then)

  • crap i already have an existing Westpac transaction account

Wish I were 18-24 years old!! Haha.

General note I would avoid Westpac - their online banking is abysmal compared to the other main players

    • Note their app / usability has changed a lot in the last year or so

  • I got rejected today for no given reason. There's no way in which I fail to meet any of the criteria, so it looks like this is a whim-based promotion:
"We have carefully assessed your application and unfortunately we’re unable to open an account at this time"
I'll give them a call and see if their deep institutional mysteries are allowed to be revealed.

Update: phone support had no application data access, and branch counter staff had no application data access. Nobody can tell me anything - the only way I can unravel the mystery of what may or may not be true is to book an in-person appointment with someone who can open the secret scrolls of Westpac Inner Knowledge. Next Wednesday I shall encounter Richard The Magnificent and cross his palm with silver.

Sounds like you'll earn your $50 then!

  • Would this work for a kids account? My kids been asking for one and this would give them a nice boost to the balance.

    • They need to be at least 15 years old to get a Debit card with Westpac and if they are under 18 then they need your permission too.
I would think they qualify as long as they meet the minimum age requirement.

      • Ah way too young ha ha.

This sort of promotion makes me angry as a Westpac customer, because existing customers miss out. So there is no loyality from banks to their customers IMO. I feel like cancelling my everyday account, in the future, so I can take up this offer when it next comes around.

    • ANZ had a similar promotion around a year or so ago. Another bank will surely do it at some point too.

I think being angry at banks for their profit margins makes sense, but I personally wouldn’t be angry at them for a marketing promotion targeting new customers. They are just paying new customers to sign up. If they had to pay their existing customers too, it wouldn’t make sense to do a promotion like this, and nobody would get a deal.

At least (if we check Cheapies) we will hear about it when other banks are doing the same promotion, but that wouldn’t be possible if they’re not doing the promotion in the first place.

      • The issue with Westpac is their interest rates are often worse than other banks. When they could be offering all customers slightly better rates, paid for by their marketing and rewards they are doing for new customers who sign up for multiple services in one go. Most banks don't seem to do this sort of thing, and those banks usually have better rates as a result.
