Help Me Pick a New Mobile Phone

My current Google Pixel phone needs replacing.

I'm likely to replace with a mid range Samsung. Any recommendations? Any great deals out there you have seen?

There are so many options out there it's a bit hard to pick so keen to hear any recommendations.

Thanks in advance, I'm hoping to pick one up in the next couple of days.

  • You can't go too far wrong with a Samsung A55. You can sometimes get it for under $600 on sale, but the price below isn't bad

    • Thank you

    • When upgrading partners phone, we also found the A55 to be the best Samsung bang for your buck, until we found trade in promos and discounts through Samusung NZ store to get an S24FE for about $500.

They seem to do them pretty regularly!

    • I bought an A55 55 256GB, Icy blue recently. This is a recent post/reply I did about it.

      Base price $799
      20% off from Unidays: $639.2
10% off from first purchase: $575.3
      EPP store code 5%: $546.53
Trade in value: (A72 not working): $0
      Trade bonus in (- $100): $446.53

**PB tech had it for $618 while I ordered it.
** A56 being announced sometime in March acc to tech websites.

Since this post, I heard that if you have a school going child, 99% they have an email if ending with ".school.nz" and that's helpful to get into the Samsung Edu EPP store or Unidays EPP store. Worth a try if your child is willing to do it for mom. :-)

      • Thanks for the detailed response!

  • Whats your budget?. I would get another pixel or something to tie you over till the next lot of sales.

    • Budget under $1k, thanks for the suggestion

  • which pixel you have now?

    • 7A

      • What happened to it?, i don't suppose you would want to buy another pixel.

        • The battery started draining rapidly when below 40% and now the battery is bulging - out of warranty period.
Would I consider another Pixel? Probably not, need to get my hands on a new phone soon and my small town doesn't sell them.
I've had Samsung phones that have lasted years with no battery issues, having this one for less than 2 years I'm now looking for reliability

          • @pohutukawa: Yea pixel and the tensor chip is far below par for the price they are asking, the inefficiencies and modem cause high battery drain and heat.
Reminds of the the nexus 6p.

I would get a samsung or oneplus due to the unlockable bootloader and community support.

          • @pohutukawa: I wonder if there is some manufacturing defect as my 7a has just done the same thing, also just past the warranty period. Mine is bulging up near the camera bar - is that the same for yours?

I was quoted $275 to replace the battery (at a shop in Auckland). I'm currently waiting for a USD15 replacement battery from AliExpress to arrive and then I'll attempt to install it myself, although there are some tiny screws in there!

  • Oneplus 12,solid performance

    • Thanks

    • +1

I got the oneplus 9 pro the experience is far better than my pixel 7 due to the Snapdragon.

      • i've had oodles of samsung and google phones over the years, oneplus 7 pro holds a place as the best phone I've owned, but even with the new software it's shocking how much better OP phones age compared to samsung / pixel phones.

Back when I was a noel leeming person I sold people upgrades to the same phone tier (So say A30->A32) because they just slowed down so much… and customers would be very sure they wanted another samsung!

Im sure things have improved but the taste in the mouth is so sour

  • My gut feel, every second year Samsung purposefully pushes an software upgrade that slows the phone so users are compelled to upgrade their phones
