Free Auckland Bus Rides / Cash Free Days: Feb 29, March 7, 8, 14-16, 21-24, 28-31, April 1

20

For 15 days over the coming months, Auckland bus drivers will refuse to accept anything but Hop cards meaning anyone trying to pay cash will get a free ride. The action is to urge Auckland Transport to better inform the public about cashless payments. Dates for Cash Free Days are 29 February; 7, 8, 14-16, 21-24, 28-31 March and 1 April.

Of note:

Metrolink, North Star, Go West, Waka Pacific bus and school bus services, CityLink, OuterLink, InnerLink, most NiteRider and some Howick & Eastern bus services will NOT be operating 4am Friday 19 February – 5:30am Saturday 20 February.

So I wouldn't be relying on buses in the next couple of months unless this gets resolved. Uber is giving away 3 x $15 rides for ASB customers otherwise you can get $10 off by grabbing a link from the Uber Referral Wiki.

None of those days correspond though..

        • Yes, that is just a reminder of chaos that will be Auckland this Friday as there will be no buses. So positive is free buses. Negative is they will be on strike this Friday (and possibly future dates).

        • @neil:

Oh I see, just a PSA?

        • @Shaw:

Yes, it's part of the industrial action. Probably worth for people to try Carpoolingor Ubering.

        • @neil:

Sweet, yea, I found the busses were pretty unreliable even when they were going up there anyway.

        • @neil:

What the hell, are you serious. I'm supposed to be catching the bus from Auckland Airport to Massey on Friday. :S

        • @Jizah:

Ouch, that's one long walk.. Uber?

        • @Shaw:

It's estimated between $75 and $95 for Uber..

        • @Jizah:

If you are with ASB, I guess you could split it up into 3 x ~$15 trips? How about a train?

        • @Shaw:

Yeah maybe a train and an Uber each end will do it. Will look into it :D

        • @Jizah:

Sweet, let us know how you get on!

        • @Shaw:

Ended up getting a shuttle, $72 for 2 people. But much faster and less stress than grabbing multiple buses.

        • @Jizah:

$36 each isn't too bad though, I'd imagine a bus would've been about $10 each?
