Any recommendations on a Rewards Credit Card for an average spender

  • I've got the Amex Airpoints Express card, 1 Airpoint per $100 spent and no annual fee. My limit is $2,200 so it's good for an everyday card that can't be blown out with expensive/impulse purchases.

  • Anz cash back ccard. Get $1 back for every $100 spent. I prefer cash to airpoints.

    • The problems with the ANZ card are the fee and the cash back limit. It's no good for a small spender, because if you spend under $10,000 it'll end up costing you more in fees than cashback, but if you spend over $30,000 then the cashback stops until the year after. Probably be good for someone with a $2,500 limit who can guarantee they'd hit that every month. At $1,000 a month though, you'd only just get back more than the fees.

  • +1

The warehouse purple card is pretty good. It's free and gives an alright return not %100 sure of the amount at this time. However, you can only use the reward money at the warehouse.

  • I will check out the Amex and the Warehouse cards. I am currently in Perth and moving back to NZ to live at Xmas.
I am surprised at the big difference in rewards card between NZ and Aus. In Aus you can get Platinum cards with no fee or first year free with 50,000 airpoints after $1500-3000 spend.

  • We've got an ANZ Airpoints Platinum visa, earn 1 airpoint per $75 spent, got 200 free airpoints when we joined (got wife a second card then cancelled it after we got the bonus points) and got fee waived when we signed up, then waived longer when we got our mortgage. We spend quite a lot so get free koru passes sometimes too (each $20k spent in a year).
We had had AmEx Platinum Edge a few years ago, got 12 movie tickets when we signed up, comes with free domestic flight per year which is worth more than the $149 fee and earns points you can redeem for vouchers. Got rid of it because it was only really accepted at supermarkets and petrol stations, so missed out on a lot of points.
Airpoints cards are compared here https://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints-direct-earn-credit…, AmEx no fee would be best for a low spender because it has no fee and earns pretty well…when you can use it, comes with 50 bonus airpoints right now.
Try to get a high earning card and get the fee waived for a year, then repeat next year.

  • Been using Bnz Visa with their flybuys, since i don't travel/fly often.

    1 point for every $40

They had an Amex card which was the best value per $ card but that ended this year :(

This is a good sign up deal, personally wouldn't bother using the card though.
