Antihistamines - Lorafix 100 Tabs (Generic of Claritin) $2.20 - Zetop 100 Tabs (Generic of Zrytec) $2.70 @ NZOnlinePharmacy.com

210

So this is a bit different to the usual cheapies post, but for those who take antihistamines for allergies etc, I found this for myself and was shocked at the price.

These are the generics of the more expensive brands and you get 100 tablets! I went to the pharmacy the other day and they showed me Zetop (generic of Zrtec) and bought for $15 for 30 tabs (month supply).

I did some digging online and the cheapest I found was about $10 for 100 Zetop and maybe a bit more for Lorafix. Until I came across this website and I thought it had to be an error or a scam! But I looked into it and they are a small physical pharmacy located in Dunedin, I ordered a couple of days ago and phoned them to make sure and they said it was shipped yesterday.

The only thing I can think of is either a priv error they haven't corrected, or maybe close to expiry, or maybe they just want to get rid of them, who knows.

Nope can confirm pricing wont be dodge, just unethical. They are selling the "not for retial sale" dispensary packs. These packs are designed to be given out on prescription. Legally ok to sell over the counter though.

    • Ahh interesting, so they are selling for the prescription price or even less since most prescriptions are $5 without community services card.

They are still making a profit on these at the prices they are selling.
Essentially with prescriptions it will be $5 regardless of quantity or cost price. as that is how the government has set it up.
The pharmacy gets a fixed profit per item dispensed again regardless of cost price. (so can dispense something that will cost a few grand and only make a few dollars on it).
When the $5 is more than the cost price and profit the pharmacy is allowed then the money is taken out of the pharmacies bank account (very simple explication, its actually alot more complicated with other factors that come into it).
Whats worth noting is if you have a dentist or specialist RX that would normally be $15, sometimes it will be cheaper just to buy the product outright.

Side note- I am a pharmacy owner too

        • Well your definitely the right person to speak to about this! Thanks for the explanation.

So when I go to the pharmacies in town and some will tell me about the generic behind the counter like the Zetop but they charge $15 for 30 tablets, are they just marking it up to less than the name brand to make more money?

        • @Hamster:
If they are selling you the pack of 30 that comes in its proper box (as opposed to repacking from a pack of 100) then $15 is about right (I sell for for $15 also)
The 30 packs actually cost us more than the 100 pack as they are not subsidized.
Any subsidised medication has its price agreed too between drug company and PHARMAC. hence being really cheap for some things.

      • With community services card it's still $5 these days isn't it? It's only if your not with a PHO that it effects it.

        • If you mean dentist and (private)specialist? yes with card its $5. For normal GP/ hospital prescriptions it's $5 regardless of card

  • That's the price on prescription, so very good for general sale…

  • thanks. bought both of them now for 10 dollars. shipping is 5 dollar

  • Any generic paracetamol around? Often can get them for 100 for 50c in Aus.

    • Not at that Pharmacy…..

      • Na, already checked there and searched, but couldn't find anything.

        • +1

Would be because our cheapest generic paracetamol comes in packs of 1000

        • @rkl:

Curiously, what is cost for a box of 1000? Cost/retail? I know manufacture is almost nothing per piece.

        • @Shaw: Cost to the pharmacy (before any rebates and discounts, which there is almost none) 9.32+gst.
Most likely PHARMAC will have their own rebate arranged which will brings its true cost (to the government) down.

        • @rkl:

Oh yea, not too bad then.

One thing for sure, it's cheaper than panadol!

        • @rkl: So, you're saying when I blow up 10 while deblistering it costs the company <1c.. mind blown

    • Cheapest online price is $7.80 for 100x 500mg Paracetamol here: http://www.onlinepharmacynz.com/product/932/Paracare_Paracet…
Cheapest online price is $16.00 for 100x 200mg Ibuprofen here: http://www.familybrands.co.nz/i_profen_tablets_100.html

Obviously much cheaper with a prescription from the doctor.

      • Was hoping for something like these haha.

        • That would be great….. if only.

        • @Wellington:

I think I still have some I grabbed when I was living there about 4 - 5 years ago, don't use them that often.

        • @Shaw: yeah I was reading this and, I haven't used 5 paracetamol this year. Do people treat them like lollies or something?

  • I recently spent $40 for 90 tabs of Zetop from the Pharmacy…

    • Ouch, im glad I only for the 30 pack from them before seeing this!

    Upvote for drugs

  • Great find and ordered mine, thanks. I go through a packet of 30 Maxi Clear Hayfever @ $14.99 every 7-8 days. Soon adds up.

    • Wow, yeah thats $2 a day. And these ones are only once a day tablets so should last over 3 months.

    • If this deal ever expires grab a prescription from your doctor, much cheaper!

      • wont be subsidised even with a prescription sorry.

        • I have a prescription for the Lorafix…. and it is subsided.

        • @Wellington: sorry im talking about maxiclear.

      • Wow yeah and apparently the added active agents in allergy med are a big scam.

        • You are thinking of OTC cold medicines. Antihistamines do just that, antagonise histamine receptors stopping the side effects of allergy. Most certainly not a scam (or I would be locked up indoors all summer)

        • @stuntah:

          OTC cold medicines

          Just flavoured paracetamol, aren't they?

        • @Shaw:

I hear a glass of whiskey works just as well ;)

        • @stuntah:

My father says that too, he's always sick, so it mustn't work lol

        • yep was meaning otc meds. just looked it up, Phenylephrine - no more affective than placebo.

  • Do they do the same pricing instore?

    • Good question, I don't see why not. If your a local could give them a call or pop in, there details are:

      Waverley Pharmacy
      146 Larnach Road

      Waverley

      Dunedin

      our phone number is

      03 454 3838 or 0064 2222 43377

  • Dead now. Back to normal price.

    • They must have got "choice cheapied" (is that how you say it?) Being a small pharmacy in Dunedin I wondered how long it might last at that price.

      • Zetop is no longer available. Lorafix won't be a shock issue though. More likely they have had a call from actavis, the ministry of health or the pharamcy media.

        • Do you mean the brand name Zetop is being discontinued? I saw on their website it is now called Zista.

Do you really think it would have gone that high up and they would have been contacted by them and that caused them to change the price to $10 (which is still cheap).

        • @Hamster: Yeap its really frowned upon in the industry. And the drug company would really not want it happening.
And yeap Zetop been changed to Zista.

  • My 4 boxes arrived today, super stoked! They are all clearly marked as for dispensing purposes only though :)

    • Yeah, got my 2 boxes the other day and same as you were for dispensing haha.
