    Great deal!

Do you have to be a Massey University student/or student to use this deal? Was this in the newspaper?

It is 😃 I found the flyer on the Massey website and above the link it said "Please feel free to pass this message on to your colleagues, friends and family so they can also have access to this special event." One presumes that anyone could use the voucher. I guess if you were asked you could say a friend gave it to you . 😉

"Cost is inclusive of GST and reflects the average invoiced purchase price of the product, but does not include any volume related adjustments which may apply"

This is absolute key when it comes to these sales. Arm yourself with pricespy (and the price history function) and be savvy about it, because often 20-30% off sales can bring an item under "cost" on big ticket items. The retailer gets their margin on rebates, bulk discounts etc.

The result is these sales are never as good as they sound and are best for picking up small high margin things like accessories (eg cables)

    • It really does vary. Last time a similar offer was on I got a large discount below any other store by quite a bit but I guess it depends on the product. Worth a shot anyway.

      • There's a good reason why it's in-store only - They don't want you to compare prices easily. Either know which product you want to buy and get a Pricespy printout beforehand, or have a good mobile data allowance.

Exactly. When I was last at Noel Leeming for that Bluetooth stereo previously listed in CC, there was an older women arguing with the counter staff about the 'cost price' of a cordless phone (something to do with the SuperGold card discount) and I thought to myself "there's no way that cordless phone would cost this much at cost price".

As for cables and accessories, Ebay and DX.com is where I would go. Unless you need something urgently they're almost always cheaper.

TL;DR This advertised 'Cost price' is the hypothetical cost price as if Noel Leeming is only buying 1 single unit from its suppliers. In reality Noel Leeming buys in lots of 100/1000 units etc. and they get massive volume discounts from their suppliers - Now this is the real cost Noel Leeming pays but you're not getting that.

What would be interesting would be to get a price from a Wellington store during the 10% offer and then compare to what they give during the larger discount period.

  • what does this promo mean? can someone explain? thanks

Basically retailers purchase products at a particular price, let's call it 'cost price'. They are then given discounts from suppliers in return for ordering bulk amounts of products. GST is charged on the total shipment when entering the country, and they then add their profit, or mark up, to make up the price you see on the shelf.

In this case, Noel's are saying they will cut their profit down to the margins mentioned above, above their cost price, but without including discounts for ordering mass, and GST. In reality it is simply a marketing gimmick, but sometimes there are good deals to be had on certain products.

    • See my comments above for further elaboration. As mentioned it's mostly a marketing tactic, and somewhat deceptive to the layman who doesn't read the terms and conditions - they think they are getting the product at no profit to the store (and therefore a good deal).

      • Every deal/bargain is a form of a marketing tactic. Still better than no discount and you can get a large discount on some products.

Yeah I know. I'm just advising people to be savvy and not get caught up in it like some do. It's a great deal for some things for sure.

  • If you work for district health boards, or some other companies that are associated with insurance for tw group, you'll get the same offer. 'cost plus gst' not great discounts most of the time but do check on what you need, it can be cheaper but rarely.
