ULPT: Get a friend to bid to whatever reserve you want

Technically shill bidding is not allowed on Trademe but in reality it's not like they can detect or enforce this. Might pay to put an autobid rather than a lump sum as it probably appears less suspicious.

      • Agreed. I wouldn't normally condone it, but just thought the $1 reserve was a bit of an annoying condition.

Nah it's against their rules. I think the classier thing is just to ghost your buyer when your item sells below your expectations?

From my buying experience anyway :)

      • They can detect it if you are stupid. Like use the same PC etc - I got picked up by someone else bidding on my auction who worked in the same building so must have a shared IP or something.

        • Even if this is the case surely they can't prove that it was shilling? What if it was a genuine bid from a coworker? Surely Tardme can't interfere…

          • @Senior Mouse: I agree, but got a semi threatening email suggesting they would cancel my account as multiple bids from different accounts at the same location - i responded but i work in a big building could be anyone and I have no idea what they are talking about - didnt hear further.

  • Re shill bidding, you can use this to max out another bidders autobid, and it's pretty nasty.

eg random appears to have an autobit.
Friend bids really high and this takes the randoms autobid right to it's top limit.
    Withdraw friends bid.
Random is now left paying their top autobid limit, not where it would have been before the friend got involved.

much sucks for them but the system isn't smart enough to adjust when a leading bid is removed, to reset randoms bid back to where it should have been.

It's in TM's interests for the winning bid to be as high as possible as they get a higher success fee.

    • Which is why you should use a website like Bidbud, instead of using autobid.

i reported a shill bidder once, the 2 accounts had the same last name (so same family) and in some items you could see it was the same house they lived in, trademe said that was not sufficient proof. Thats when i realized why people call them tard me
