  • Could just use Spotify and block hostfile entries and no ads whatsoever

    • Bit complex for most. Not to mention no use on your mobile . 99c is pretty good, get spotify with Spark mobile otherwise would give it a go.

      • Do people actually use Amazon music? I'd still go with Spotify personally.

Also, this deal is just temporary, you only get it for a few months and then you're back to paying full price. I'd rather invest in a permanent or long term "solution". It's super easy to add a few entries into your hostfile, literally like 2~3 steps to do. You can also very easily get Spotify "premium" on your phone too, assuming you're using Android.

This is kinda like the equivalent of people not knowing how to block Youtube ads and then wasting money on Youtube premium. Ublock/Adblock is pretty much common sense these days, super easy to install. And if you want to watch Youtube on Android without ads, there are plenty of solutions out there, such as Youtube Vanced.

So yeah, personally I would still recommend for people to invest in a bit of time learning how to set these up. Shouldn't take you more than 5~10 minutes.

BTW, the hostfile entry blocks ads, which also gives you unlimited skips. So essentially, you get Spotify Premium, just without the music being at the higher bitrate (which makes no difference to my ears, they still sound great).

        • Hey Chaos,
Your post sounds interesting, are you able to link a guide on how blockad and do the unlimited skips?
          Spotify using Android and Windows?
          Thanks :)

@aih-lun: I'm not sure if this counts as piracy or not, but adding domains to hostfile shouldn't be considered as "piracy" related, so I think it's safe to link the following:

Just edit your hostfile with the domains in the list and you're done. Easy as. There are plenty of other guides out there on Github or Reddit. Google does wonders. Here are a few other guides/options:

It's important to note that the latest version of Spotify tries to circumvent the Adblock trick by not playing certain songs (they just don't stream for some reason). So you'll need to use an older version of Spotify, in combination with hostfile. I personally use v1.0.96.181 and you can find older versions on Google.

There are also open source versions of Spotify, again, just Google.

For Android, you can just download Spotify Premium patched/cracked apk files and install them. Works perfect on my multiple Android devices, including on my Android TV.

            • @NovaAlpha: Awesome! thanks for the info. Will give it a go when i get some time :)

            • @NovaAlpha: Sorry one more question:
When you say…"For Android, you can just download Spotify Premium patched/cracked apk files and install them. Works perfect on my multiple Android devices, including on my Android TV"

Is it safe to use hacked/cracked versions of the app via apk download, when you also use the mobile for credit card, bank payments etc.

              • @aih-lun: Depends on the source where you get them from. As with everything else, e.g torrenting, make sure you aren't going to dodgy sites

    • What do you put in hostfile?
Can this be made to work with Chromecast with a Dns filter? Any how tos out there?

      • See my post above.

  • Did anyone manage to sign up for this successfully?

As soon as I put in a NZ billing address the offer changes from 4 months to 30 days.

I juat make up an ozzie billing address, but wondering whether credit card payment will go through in that case.
