    It's not the worst prize implementation I've seen as it's the decision engine is handle server side.
    
    However, a little time spent in further developing the browserFingerprint, x-api-key and maybe headers would make it a lot harder for (profanity) like us to take advantage.
    
    Oh and I would probably put in some throttling.

        @bmc: I work for a company where we did a competition where everything was handled client side…. eeeesh the high scores just got higher and higher and the developer said that he couldn't fix it.

        I actually think it's a simple decision engine that just decides how much you won according to its allocation.

      Interesting thing is I think they did make some changes to their code when they changed api-key overnight? At least I know someone who had a bug in their code which meant it could generate invalid browser fingerprints with less than 16 bytes due to not adding enough leading zeroes. From what I understand the nature of the code meant it must have happened a lot of times, yet there was no problem the first day. Second day when this happened they started to get try a different browser messages with their first run when they used the invalid browser fingerprint.

        @Nil Einne: The browserFingerprint isn't part of API authentication logic apart from its length, which I think is their biggest mistake. I definitely would not have been bothered to write a script to generate the browserFingerprint token according to their requirements. (for a potential return of $20/$50)
        
        Not too sure the point of the x-api-key as it's exposed clientside so not really preventing anyone from copying and using it.
        
        Like I said, some sort of simple logic to generate the browserFingerprint that the server could perform a checksum, would stop 98% of the scripts being created.

I think the promotion worked fairly well for Waitomo Fuel. A lot of people are now aware of Waitomo Fuel and now have downloaded the app. Now they're forced to learn how to use there self service system via the app to recover there prize.
