T&C says two hot chocs per car, so is that just a technicality?

    I'm going to say:

Just go to different z energy stations to receive x2 free hot chocolates per person. Use the verbal word CHOC

Just a feedback as I just walked across the road to get 2x free hot chocolates at Z Mt Wellington. When I told them this free hot chocolate promo, they said they knew nothing about that. I was going to show them the promo and they found a piece of the paper on their desk. I thought they knew about this but pretend not know anything. Then they only gave me one. I said it should be for two, then they have shown their unwillingness but they gave me the second one. I am sure I am not going back to this Z again to get the free hot chocolates. Anyway, thank you for sharing the information.

    • +6

      True Cheapies also go back

    • lol, similar happened to me. Requested two since it's free, but they wanted me to pay for one (BOGOF). I asked for one (free) and left. Plenty of Z stations where I live, so…

    • They should have given you two when you asked for two once they found the promotion terms. But see no reason to think "they knew about this but pretend not know anything". It's the first day and from the time of your post relatively early. I mean okay yes the earlier promotions had been running, but their uptake was likely a lot poorer than this. Even at fast food outlets where their whole purpose is to serve food, it's very common to come across order takers and even managers who don't know about their promotions, when their promotion has been running for days or it's already late in the day. (For rare promotions even weeks.) See no reason why Z staff will be more informed about their promotions.

      • Staff probably fed up with people walking in and out with free hot drinks. Surprised the freebies have been going on for so long. I think the BPMe promo will be ending soon, June/July.

        • Long? I thought this just started today? The other promotions weren't free drinks were they? Seemed to be other stuff like free alternative milks etc. That's also what the comments here support

      • The reason I put the comment "they knew about this but pretend not know anything" is because the piece of paper of the promo is sitting at the counter. However, when I mentioned it, the staff (looks like a manager) there said she knew nothing. Then the next minute she found the piece of paper and told the other staff who is making the coffee to give me the hot chocolate. Then when I asked for 2x hot chocolates later, the lady asked the manager again, her face was not looking too happy. It is just the common sense to think they are doing this intentional. By the way, I didn't go and get the hot chocolates for free only, I made purchase there. I always believe there is no free lunch :)

        • Sitting at the counter doesn't mean anyone looked at it. The good news is that this promotion is likely to be popular enough I suspect most staff and especially managers will learn about it within a day or two. Well staff may be a bit complicated given they may not have worked any shifts yet, but provided the managers know there should be less confusion.

I don't know what happened with you, but I think you're seriously overestimating how much staff actually pay attention to or care about whatever random promotion someone came up with in marketing or how much time they're give to learn about these. Remember these tend to be close to if not actual minimum wage jobs often with crappy hours, crappy conditions and having to deal with all sorts of nonsense from customers and management yet also very boring most of the time. The staff just want to do their jobs and be done with it. They aren't given the time or training to learn about every promotion the store happens to be running. That's bad but that's on management. It's not because staff are up to some big conspiracy, it's because they genuinely don't know. And I suspect even generally management isn't doing it because they want to avoid fulfilling the promotions. Especially in large non franchise business we can be fairly sure most of the time it's just because they don't want to spend time teaching staff about promotions because it costs money to do that. Instead they try to get them to learn on the job. Again poor practice but unlikely to be some big conspiracy.

When you asked for a second one it was likely something similar still going on. The staff member didn't want to spend time reading the promotion terms carefully because then a queue might develop so they still weren't sure if you were entitled to 2. When you asked they had to deal with it they were annoyed since they had thought they'd dealt with you and could move on. They didn't want to risk being yelled at later for doing something they shouldn't have so asked the manager. I suspect there's a good chance even the manager didn't know you were entitled to two but decided it was easier to just give two rather than worry about it.

I once tried to redeem the free Whopper Junior Breakers voucher at Burger King and both the staff member taking my order and their manager didn't seem to know what it was or what to do. This was liked the third or fourth time it had been on although I think it had been maybe a few weeks since it was last on. While looking around waiting for them to work out what to do, I realised there was a big banner on the window well in the line of sight of staff which I'm guessing had been there for weeks. It was also fairly late in the day but I think away from shift changes so frankly I was fairly surprised they didn't know. But although I don't know their minds, I'm confident both from what happened but also from my experience with many different promotions in variety of different stores in NZ it was that they were genuinely fairly unaware rather than pretending they were so I would go away. Eventually they sort of work out. I actually think maybe one factor was I got unlucky, IIRC other staff were on a break or cleaning so I think maybe the staff member who served me was one who often didn't take orders. I think maybe one or more of the others did know about the voucher and had dealt with it before, but once it had gone to the manager, they just left it. Since they knew what to do, they'd never asked the manager so she still didn't know.

I've had other similar experiences. E.g. one time at a Pita Pit outlet, there was a promotion which had been running I think for a week. At one outlet, near the end of the day the sole staff member was IMO genuinely unaware of the promotion and ended up asking if they could take photos of the promotion details from Facebook (I think it was) which I had shown them on my phone to show to their manager or maybe owner (since I think Pita Pit is a franchise business). (It may have been this promotion https://www.cheapies.nz/node/17303 but I'm not sure.)

P.S. I want to be clear I'm not suggesting we shouldn't demand promotions are fulfilled. We should. I'm also not suggesting it's okay that staff tend to be so unaware of these promotions so you sometimes have to spend time showing them Facebook posts etc to convince them, This shouldn't happened. I can perhaps accept staff or manager going to check up themselves on whatever document management sent them without you needing to argue although even that is obviously annoying and ideally shouldn't happen.

I'm just saying most of the time it's happening because staff are genuinely unaware of the myriad of promotions etc that are running, and their specific terms and conditions etc because of poor processes to teach them, because there are often many different ones changing regularly and other problems in the way the business is run often related to cost cutting etc. I'm confident it's rare that staff intentionally pretend they don't know or lie about something they know to be untrue. I mean that does happen as well especially I'm sure in small franchise stores where the owner really doesn't want to lose money on something promotion they've been forced to accept. But most of the time, the classic adage don't put down to conspiracy what could be explained by incompetence applies. (Although even incompetence is complicated here for the reasons explained earlier.) I.E. it's genuinely blur/confused staff rather than anything bigger.

  • Wonder if they'll let us buy a shot of coffee with it to turn it into a mocha.

    • +4

They will say no at first, but will reluctantly agree after showing them the promo on FB. You will still receive your free drink, plus a frown ;)

      • +1

Ive just had a similar experience lol

  • Why are people saying this ends on 31 July?

I don't know what it said in the past, but the current T&C suggests it ends on 6 June in multiple places as pointed out above.

    There is mention of:

    Team Shouts
This is for any sized hot Z Espress drink including alternative milks and flavour shots. The limit per team shout is ten Z Espress hot drinks.
Redemption of free drinks is via a promo code via the Z App. Free drinks must be redeemed before 31 July 2021.

But there's no further explanation of what "Team Shouts" is. It doesn't seem to be the same thing as the free medium size hot chocolate with code verbal code CHOC as Team Shouts seem to be for up to 10 drinks and is also for any sized hot drinks. It also uses a promo code on the app not a verbal code. Given the name, I wonder if it's a future promo related to buying drinks for your mates/office. Frankly I wonder if the Team Shouts bit was supposed to be in the current T&C or a future T&C.

    • I think the verbal code "CHOC" free medium hot chocolate is only available "before June 6", according to their FB post.

  • +2

Tried to do this but was declined, its terrible when you have to explain to staff about these promotions

    • Happens to me all the time with SOS vouchers used via the InKind app

90% of stores I've tried to use it in had no idea there was a paperless version and have no idea how to process it. Almost worthless if it weren't for Hayes Common in Hamilton knowing how to use it.

      • True. It varies from different Z. My friend was declined too and she was asked for a bar code to scan. They have the barcode but they asked the customer for the barcode? So maybe you should try the other Z.

  • +2

Just went to Z Ponsonby and had absolutely no problem with this promotion

  • Went to Z on Lunn avenue and had no problem.
The lady scanned some barcode and was happy to make me one

  • Z on onewa rd seemed to understand it wasn't two free hot chocolates but BOGOF, they gave me a free one anyway though, thanks for the sweet deal ;)

  • Z cashmere in Christchurch a bit of a frown but claimed all okay

  • This promo runs until 6 June not 31st July!!
Just redeemed my first lot of 2! Awesome

  • Anyone added a coffee shot to their hot chocolate yet?

    • I have added flavours only

  • Rude service at the Wiri Station Rd Z Station.

  • Only got 1 at Lynfield Z, better than nothing was first get code right

  • Does this finish at 12 midday?

    • Yes

      • not working anymore? Unsure where it says ends midday

        • Deal link. Point 1 of the terms and conditions.
