This is a must watch for anyone who uses tablets in their dishwasher:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rBO8neWw04

Basically because tablets are only released in the second stage, there is no cleaning agent available in the rinse cycle so the oils on your plates etc end up getting smeared everywhere instead of suspended in the water and removed in that first rinse cycle.

I used to use only tablets but I have since gone back to using powder only. You can use tablets if you put some powder in the rinse dispensor, but it's more hassle than just using solely powder.

    Each to their own :)

Good advice and also a brilliant Youtube channel

    • Disclosure: I didn't watch the video. If they have a text write up, then I'd read it, but I don't normally bother with video only stuff - its too inefficient.

      However, having said that…

I believe that the initial rinse cycle is intended to get the particulate matter off things, not to remove the grease, so that sounds precisely how it is supposed to work with tablets.

If you use powder, it all gets used in the first stage (I believe - might vary by washer?), which means that it is not as effective at getting the grease off.

That means, if you rinse before putting in the dishwasher, then you might be better of using powder (no particulate matter to be removed first), but if you don't then you should definitely use tablets.

More importantly (for us Cheapies!) is:

Which is lower cost - powder or tablets?

My gut feeling has always been that powder should be cheaper, but I'd love to see some calculations where we can plug in costs (based on deals such as the ones on this page) and work out the best option if we buy powder or tablets when they are offered on a deal / in bulk.

      Thanks,

      Alan.

      • If you use powder, it all gets used in the first stage (I believe - might vary by washer?), which means that it is not as effective at getting the grease off.

Nope, dishwashers have two powder compartments. You should watch the video… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

        • Fair enough - I've always just filled everything indiscriminately.

Do they talk about relative costs though? That's what I am more interested in.

          Thanks,

          Alan.

      • Just a teaspoon of detergent over the dishes acts as a wetting agent and that's the only difference between these more expensive tablets.

      • Active brand dishwashing powder recommended 33g for each wash, so 2kg will last for 60 washes.

The 1day dishwashing tablet deal posted by Nachos recently was pretty good, $9 for 110 washes, I think I should stock up more when this kind of deal come up, I have only use powder before this.

        • Thanks GeoffGo - Good to have a comparison point.

If we assume $10 for 2kg (on a promotion / special), then around 17c per wash which is actually very close to my personal 'max' price I would pay for tablets.

I bought some of the 110 tabs for $9 recently - that was exceptional, and the 5c each that Cobra mentioned (below) is ridiculous, but I would assume not to be repeated as probably they were clearing out old stock.

If I see offers around 12c, I usually stock up, and I haven't bought tablets at more than 15c for quite some time which is fine if you have somewhere to store the things.

          Alan.

    • Should point out that a lot of new dishwashers dont have a dispenser for the first rinse cycle anyway.
My sisters Bosch and perants dishdrawers don't whereas my F&P front loader does (which is literally a small indent on the the dispenser cover)
I use the 5g of powder in the rinse cycle when the dishes are pretty bad, and stick to a tablet in the dispenser.

    • Looks like the video is talking more about the gel packs that just break apart immediately? I believe tablets should dissolve / release slower? With F&P dishwashers (at least the newer ones) you can't even put the tablets into the dispenser, but only directly into the wash on a small tray

      https://producthelp.fisherpaykel.com/nz/Clean/DishDrawer%E2%…

I've opened the dishwasher before even after ~1hr of the wash cycle just to retrieve something I desperately needed and there's definitely still detergent in there so it does look like at least with newer F&P dishwashers the tablet is good for both cycles.

Could possibly get 220 tablets for:

$27 ($13.50 ea.) @ The Warehouse via pricematch.
    $25.80 (12.90 ea.) @ Mitre 10 via pricematch.

    Use $14.99 Chemist Warehouse

that's what we call a pro gamer move

    • Just tried to pricebeat with The Warehouse in app and Joie said 1-day is a "daily deal website" so they cannot do pricebeat.

Update: I should pricebeat against Chemist Warehouse not 1-day!! So I went back to chat with the same person and send them Chemist Warehouse $14.99(lower than 1-day) and voila!

    • Getting Warehouse to price beat themselves is pretty damn hilarious. There isn't usually any product crossover between brands, is there

  • Can I cancel order on 1-day after payment have been made

    • +1

Yes. Just go on the chat and I'll cancel it straight away.

      • Cheers mate! Just did that with no hassles

        • I see I put I'll when I meant they'll. Cancel a few times no problems.
