Strong contender to the Amazon Firestick with beefy CPU and GPU (plus 8GB storage), and 2 GB DDR4 ram.

The TiVo aspects are limited to an optional TiVo experience app. Automatically boots to stock Android TV launcher everytime, making it literally a lean mean Android TV box. There are no restrictions being based in NZ, except you probably can't get much out of the TiVo experience app. Been using it for a year now.

Remote is reliable (with working Google Assistant) and runs on two AAA batteries. TiVo and number Buttons can be remapped with button mapper from playstore.

Sideloading is easy using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yablio.sen… . Just download it to the TiVo and then use an android phone/mac or windows PC to push APKs through and install using a Android TV file explorer app.

Ah memories. What a total (profanity) the NZ deployment of TiVo was, sold only through Telecom from memory and with no EPG support as internet service cut off a few years later.

    • You're so right! It worked so well though, we loved out TiVo!

      • +2

Still got my old one here gathering dust soon to be joined with the VodafoneTV :)

    • There is a community EPG you can use by replacing a chip and modding the firmware.

  • Anyone using Plex on this device? How to the local apps work? TVNZ etc?

    • Have not tried Plex, though should work as expected. It is simply an Android box, i.e. Netflix, TVNZ from Google Play store etc. The TiVo aspect is literally internet-based streaming contained within the TiVo Experience android app. Just a HDMI output and a microusb cable for powering it.

      • Many Android TV devices can't install NZ apps like TVNZ natively from the app store. Seems to be only certain devices can install it.
Sideloading might be possible, but makes updating a hassle.

  • We actually had tivo series 1's up and running in 2000/2001. it bit of hacking and were loading our own epg, etc. those were the days!

There’s a TiVo thread over at Geekzone.

    Might be useful.

  • Will it remux tho?

  • Way too many negative reviews on Amazon for me. I'll stay with my Roku and Mibox 4 (and the LG TV built-ins)

That is a shame, it is a game changer for myself. I opted for this one because I didn't want a Chinese box (MiBox), nor did I want an overpriced Apple TV or a Bezos machine (firestick with average/sluggish specs).

Judging from the top 3 negative reviews:
      1) Google TV, hot ads garbage mixing with stock launcher buttons.
      - Have not had this happen yet, (I guess update hasn't been pushed thankfully.) However, I imagine would be able to sideload another TV launcher like Wolf and that would resolve it.

      2) $499 per year??
      - I dunno where they got the idea they are forced into using the TiVo subscription service. You only need to create a free TiVo account to obtain a code, which is used to register your box and unlock it. From there you basically never see TiVo again.

      3) Don't buy a Tivo Stream 4k in Canada!
      Again, see above.

The only other cons I can think of, is the audio support and the likes. Afaik, it supports Dolby Digital/Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, DTS. I have it hooked into a 50' TV, video input comes through on the TV's HDMI1 port. Though I do have a 7.1 AV receiver with HDMI pass-through, and the audio somehow routes it through that (I think using HDMI CEC or so). So all in all, seems to work for average TV setups.

  • I get tired of these devices that were able to get Freeview and are now no longer supported. First TIVO now Vodafone TV.
Just bought a Dish TV and its bloody useless. Looks like its overheating, keeps crashing all the time.
Anyone got any bright ideas how to get Freeview without an aerial?
