How do yhey make money on these? Are the tapes whopping expensive?
They make money from the consumables. But cheapies always buy third-party tapes from Aliexpress.
Razor and blades model.
They chew through batteries, and they separately sell an expensive power adapter that is abnormal, but not in a way that will increase the BOM (centre negative).
The tapes are also huge margin, and they create a lot of tape waste, such as an inability to save your settings which you have applied to minimise the amount of tape used per label (narrow, smaller font size etc).
So they sell the units at a loss in order to create a captive audience on the tapes where they do everything in their power to use as much tape as possible per label.
EG tapes from Brother are 10x the price of the ones from AliExpress, and the latter ones are still profitable (else they wouldn't be made and sold).
Aliex listing for tape refill. you can get the 12mm wide one
