Optus Flex Prepaid eSIM: $0 for the First 7-day Subscription (then Plans from $7 for 7GB for 7 Days) @ Optus (Australia)

110

Travelled to Australia a few weeks ago and stumbled on this deal: Optus are offering 7GB/7days for $7 with the first 7 Days free. You’ll need an esim capable phone, however, this is significantly cheaper than any roaming deal I could find. Was easy to set up through their app on arrival in Australia too!

eSIM 7-day trial

Pay $0 for the first 7-day subscription on the Optus Flex plan. Only available to new customers with an eSIM capable device who are activating on an eSIM. Limit one free trial per customer. Excludes rate plan changes, SIM swaps and ports of existing mobile numbers. Available for activation with a new mobile number via My Optus app self-service activation only on the 7-day subscription, without international calls. Credit/debit card details required for activation, plus valid ID if prompted. Fair Go Policy applies. Subscription will renew after 7 days unless cancelled, and subsequent subscriptions will be charged at standard in-market price.

Optus Flex

All Optus Flex options are set by default to automatically recharge at 11:00pm Sydney time on the day of plan expiry. You can change, set up, and turn off your subscription, as well as buy Add Ons, through the My Optus app only. Non-standard national calls or SMS/MMS, international calls or SMS/MMS and roaming are not included but are available by purchasing Add Ons.

Activation

For new numbers, activate Optus Flex via My Optus app with an eSIM or $2 SIM. If you would like to port an existing number for activation, a web chat agent will assist in the activation process. Transferring your number happens Mon-Fri 8am-8pm AEST and Sat 10am-6pm AEST. We have to wait for your old provider to release your number. This can take 15 minutes to 4 hours. Until then, you'll stay connected to your old network. Activation and SIM swaps of value SIMs will not be available on the Optus Flex plan. No inclusions or credit will be transferred during rate plan change to and from Optus Flex.

Data

For the 7, 14 and 30 day subscriptions you will receive all the allocated data up front to use when it suits you.

Data Rollover

Roll over unused included MyData up to a max of 200GB when you maintain an active subscription. If you accrue over 200GB of data you will forfeit any data over that limit. MyData Rollover will be used after any Unlimited Data Day Add On, MyData Add On, MyData or MyData Bonus allowances you may have on your current recharge.

Cannot be activated from nz. You need to be in AU to activate it. I tried it 2 weeks back without luck.

It can be activated on arrival in Aus though which is what I did.

        Isn't that what I meant.

Deal isn't available in New Zealand though OP.

    • I’m aware, it’s available if you are travelling to Australia.

      • I was thinking of this

Is this deal available to New Zealand?

        But you might be alright.

Deals in Overseas Countries - Deals available overseas may be applicable to New Zealanders traveling to that destination. Some deals located overseas may not be applicable to the majority of New Zealanders in reasonable circumstances however. Currently only travel/tourist related deals should be posted on ChoiceCheapies, these include but are not limited to: Flights, Accommodation, Tours, Airport Facilities/Transport, Special Events (World Cup, Olympics etc) & Communication (Sim Cards, Roaming internet etc). Deals outside of these categories or not realistically applicable to the majority of members may be removed by a moderator.

    Different option
    https://www.koganmobile.com.au/plans/mobile/

    $5 for 10GB (first month)
    $10 for 40GB (first month)
    $40 for 80GB (first month)

    No contract.

    10GB deal terms for example:

    • New Customer Offer: $10 OFF First Monthx
    • Only $15 for 10GB a month thereafter with no hidden fees
    • No lock-in contract^
    • UNLIMITED* standard national calls for 365 days
    • VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling capabilities
    • BYO Phone number & device
    • UNLIMITED* standard texts and MMS for 365 days
    • All for use within Australia*
    • Additional international roaming, international call, and data packs available
    • Plan includes mandatory auto recharge – call to cancel your plan at any time
    • Kogan AU is decent too, and a good option if you’re going for more than 7 days. I used them last time (was 20gb for 30 days though). Not sure why Kogan NZ charge so much to roam in Australia (700mb for $11.90). I found Optus easier to set up too.

      • Agree, it would be a killer feature for Kogan NZ to roam onto Kogan AU. Strange it's not a few dollars per gig as I'll gladly sim swap instead.

    • Looks like the promotion is gone now unfortunately. It's back to standard $15.

  • Felix Mobile do a month free. Esim, unlimited calls, texts, and data (up to 20mbps).Just used it for our trip over and had no issues.

    • Have they still got this deal? Website only shows 50% off for first 3 months

      • Damn, yea, looks like they've changed it, might've expired 01/04.

  • I thought WiFi calling replaces the roaming if you are on the 2 degrees/Vodafone. All you need is the data plan in Aus. I haven’t tried yet but this was my plan on my next visit. I have a dual sim mobile phone.

    • Wifi calling is great but still need to have data (outside of wifi access). 2degrees/Spark/Vodafone all charge $8 a day. Much cheaper to get a local esim.

  • You need to have a valid Australia visa, which you will have once you pass the border.

It doesn't work all the time though. I got this sorted a month ago on a Pixel 6. My colleague went to Sydney last week but can't get this to work on his iPhone 14. The staff in the Optus shop right next to the arrival terminal in Sydney airport also said it is buggy from time to time. So YMMV.

    • Didn’t require an Australian Visa when I used it.

      • You are granted a special category visa automatically when you enter Australia if you are an NZ Citizen with an NZ Passport. You don’t need to apply and you wouldn’t even notice you have it.

        • Thanks, but Optus don’t state that they require an Australian visa, just valid ID to open an account.

    • Correct.
Starts working about 30mins-1hr after entering so you cant "pre activate" on the plane or in nz for example.

  • You don't need an Esim, if you go to the optus desk at the airport they will give you an optus sim for free and set you up on this plan.

    • It’s only free for the first week if you get the plan via esim.

When you arrive in Sydney International, turn right, go past the optus store, to the next generic sim store, and that's where I got a free optus sim (optus would only sell me the large monthly plan and I was only there for 5 days).
