Which Electricity Company to Pick Next?

Hi everyone,

Just coming to the end of our 1 year contract with Mercury and looking to switch. Any recommendations?
At present, contact weekend looks to be the best with its referral bonus. What do you guys think?

This is for a low user household in Auckland using about 300kwH per month

  • Ditto contact good nights plan. I also use it to heat up the HWC

Good nights here too. Must be a Cheapies thing 😅. Without too much effort we get about 20% (on average) of our power free: at 9pm we put on the dishwasher, a load of washing and a load in the dryer, and the heaters go on in winter and the air conditioning goes on in summer. On a "not really trying" night we might get 3-4kWh free. If we are really dedicated we can get anything from 9-15kWh free, or ⅓-½ of our daily power.

I particularly like the fact we don't have to feel guilty about turning on both heat pumps plus a fan heater or two for a couple of hours every night on really cold nights in winter, or blasting the heat pumps to get the house down to a comfortable temperature in summer. That alone is a strong reason for me to stay on their plan! We used the EK "Hour of Power" previously, but often found an hour simply wasn't enough.

It is a little more expensive than other plans though, so if you can't regularly shift a good lot of your load to the night then it won't be the cheapest option.

  • Electric Kiwi. Free hour of power each day (You choose the time, outside peak)

  • if you have EV car need to charge at night, Z power offer 3 hours free during 3am to 6am

    • I have found Contact good nights plan better then Z as the duration of 9-12 is favorable for other things like dishwasher, laundry, heatpumps etc. There is not everything you can put a timer ON between 3-6am unless you manually do it like dishwasher. Charging EV is no issues with either plan as you can easily time it.

      • I made a sheet to compare. because i use very low usage 9-12pm, and Z is better for me

        Compare

    • Same for me (and I have an EV to charge). I've also got my dishwasher and washing machine talking to Home Assistant and have automations that make them run at 3:00am if required.

  • Good nights here too. Using the 3 hour to charge car, washing machine, dishwasher, dryer, HWC and on average averaged around 56-60% free usage. Biggest consumption last year was in July : 772.98kWh used, 427kWh free.

Loving this as the bill stays around $90-$130 even in winter!

    • That sounds great!
Can you lock your rates for a year or is it a flexible term?

      • Mine was contract for a year then rolled out and become open term.

  • Powershop is my suggestion!!

My lastest bill for 30days was 324Kwh used total cost of $93.72.

I purchase all future packs and any available discount packs to maxamise savings over the year.

Been with them for 5+ years.

    • What's the actual cost when you include the cost of purchasing the packs?

    • I am just ending my 1st month with Powershop, and I haven't got the final bill yet, but looks like I've used 378Kwh for a estimated total cost of $118.35 using packs and discounts. (Works out to be $2.33/day + $0.128/Kwh.)

Using the standard rates would have cost $138.51

If you've got the standard daily rate, that means your /Kwh rate is about $0.07! That's insane

    • What suburb are you in?

    • Is $93.72 with GST or without gst?

    • +1

I wasn't a fan of Powershop having to buy future packs etc, made a bit of a chore out of a power bill. Hiding the price behind a discounted future pack system is not dissimilar to what supermarkets are doing hiding regular prices behind their loyalty cards, and punishing those who don't sign up.

  • I see Contact have a new plan which gives half price rates daily between 9 pm and 7 am.

    Anyone made the switch?

    • I think that's the rebrand of their EV plan.

Depends on your usage I guess. For me, it's better to stick with 3 hour free as I got these rates:
      14.2c/kwh - night rate
      28.4c/kwh - day rate
      VS
      30.1/kwh all day rate
      3-hour free.
On my last month bill, the new half price rate will cost me $161 vs $110 if I stayed on the 3-hour free period

  • I'm using Octopus Energy. I average about 5~6 kWh a day. Most of my usage is outside of peak hours and their rates are cheaper outside of peak hours and at night. On weekends, it's also cheap. Look them up.

  • I'm with Flick, started with Flat but quickly moved to the off/on peak pricing plan since most of our power use is at off peak times.

Try out powerswitch.org.nz, It's a free tool by Consumer NZ, allows you enter your address or ICP and input your total monthly kWH and aggregates what the cost per company would be, also includes other stuff like price if you bundle broadband with the power etc.

  • I would strongly suggest search and book mark all major and retail power providers in your area put in your near by random neighbour s address you could also try yours some meters are configured differently not all some power companies will provide the same rates but not all , my address best rate for 24hr was 17cent per kwh including GST on a 2 year contract plus 250 NZD discount day rate is 1somerhing

  • Frank Energy is good. No contract to sign and best price when I compare with others

  • Our electricity rate with Meridian, the lowest that we could find since we switched over last Dec:

    Rate: 15.81c/kWh
    Daily charge: 104.48c/day

GST exclusive. We are in Canterbury.

    Worth shopping around for deals!

    • +1

That is a very decent rate per kWh!

      • yep, we got it via Powerswitch. cheaper than the standard rate on Meridian's website.

      • Canterbury probably has cheaper electricity in general.

The price of electricity varies significantly depending on the region.
