  • anyone have converted their bike to an ebike with bafang motor? what are the pro and cons vs a pre-made ebike? any tips and review will be much appreciated. and roughly how much it cost-battery size, motor size and etc.

Yes, recommend. Get a 500w mid mount with at least a 13ah battery. Prices on ali express.

      • did you have any problem shipping the lithium battery to nz? i read there are some restriction to importing battery…i could be wrong… and are they geniune samsung or lg batterry? do you have the link which you use on ali express?thanks

        • +2

No problems for me, but shipping was expensive for this reason. The one I bought isn't up anymore, mine has lg cells, best to buy from the stores with the most feedback.

          • @couponfan: Second this. Don't buy from stores without feedback, the more the better

I bought my battery for my conversion locally. They're not that much more expensive than the ones from Ali inc shipping. If you do buy from Aliexpress you'll need to find a seller that offers DHL/EMS/Fedex; otherwise your shipment will simply get denied entry and returned once it gets to customs.

Alternatively you can order from Green Bike Kit. They ship internationally and are competitively priced

    • Yes I have done two conversions so far.

      Currently on a bbshd 1000w 48v 11.6ah system on a merida big 7 frame.

Other whanau have gone for sinch bikes.

Theirs died and was not salvageable. Mines servicable with cheap parts and easily upgradable battery with no vendor lock in.

Pros: lots of support and parts available without (profanity) you pricing by nz vendors. User servicable + re programable. Can use a second hand donor bike with higher quality componentry vs mid range ebikes.

Cons: cadence sensor only, bit awkward to get used to initially vs torque sensor on most mainstream brands.
      Not the best looking cosmetically.

      Highly highly recommend.
