    Gas is $36 at briscoes

  • +3

I've seen this go on sale for around $78 a few times. Always tempted to buy, but the gas refill is what stops me. At the end of the day, it's actually not that much cheaper compared to just buying sparkling water, which I only drink every now and then anyway…

    • Wait for Briscoes to have a 50% off sale and can swap old bottles for new filled ones. Last time we got them for $13.50 a bottle. New bottles were $18 each

      • So if I understand correctly, it's $36 for a new one at Briscoes (https://www.briscoes.co.nz/product/1103731/sodastream-gas-on…), but $18 for the "refill" price and that's if you bring in your old gas bottle to swap with a new one?

Wouldn't 50% off make them $9, not $13.50? Or was that not a 50% off deal that you got?

I didn't know 50% off includes refill services. Thought it was for actual product purchases.

How often do they do 50% off on the refills? Asking because Briscoes always has a "sale", so I never know what is actually a proper deal with them anymore.

        • I honestly was super confused myself but not complaining since $13.50 for 60 litres is much cheaper than even buying the cheap countdown soda water. It might have been an exception to the same?

        • I ended up buying one at Mitre10 for ~$66 because of the 15% price beat. If they can also price beat on the gas bottle refill, that would be awesome. Will have to test this out next time in conjunction with the Briscoes 50% off.

          • @NovaAlpha: You might be able to price beat the refills but it's likely difficult since the prices aren't shown online. Perhaps you can do one and then show a receipt, ask them to call, or record asking Briscoes in store about the price. Given the complexity I've never tried.

Price beating new gas cylinders is easier since these are show online. That said in the most recent sale for some reason the online price didn't show the 50% for reason so it was probably more difficult.

The previous sale they did and I was able to do it. The first store said the couldn't because it was online only or something. I didn't try arguing since was already planning to visit other stores looking for later expiring syrups and second did it without problem.

Note these are also only for the normal 50% sales. I imagine the friends and family ones they might completely refuse to price beat and are arguably entitled to under their policy.

        • It's $40 for a new cylinder at Briscoes without discount. $36 is with the 10% discount shown. Not sure why Nonarina got them for $18 during the last 50% sale. IIRC the previous sale they were $20 at least in the online price so this is what Mitre10 beat from. I believe NomNom below is correct and the regular price for refills is $27 hence $13.50 when they are 50% off.

          • @Nil Einne: Does Mitre10 price beat on refill service?

Let's say Briscoes now has a 50% off on the regular refill, which makes it $13.50. Can I then get Mitre10 to price beat that by another 15%?

            • @NovaAlpha: The refill service isnt actually briscoes refilling the canister.
They just swap the old for new bottles.
Im not sure why they wouldnt do the swap service and price beat, no doubt they will try to worm out of it.

This allows soda stream to control quality of bottles. They advertise on their website the bottle quality control.
Not a good look if one fails on the news.

              • @Foodie: The big problem IMO is going to be proving what the price is. It's not advertised on the Briscoes website so you can't use an online price. I think prices aren't even shown in store but even if they are during the sale they just say 50% off everything in store, they don't show a discount price for the refills (or new for that matter). So trying to prove it's $13.50 is difficult. That's why I suggested either getting them to call Briscoes (probably early in the morning when they're less busy), recording Briscoes staff telling you the price which applies to everyone or showing a receipt; seems your best hope for a price match.

Technically though if Mitre10 wanted to argue I'd suggest this in their FAQ could exclude price beating

Can Mitre 10 competitors’ product be similar rather than the same as the product that Mitre 10 stocks?

For the Price Guarantee to apply, the product must be the same make, model and colour, including being a new-boxed product. Any products sold with ‘bonus items’ or similar can only be compared against identical products sold by our competitors (i.e. with bonus products). Variability in timber products may result in some claims being declined.

Technically this could be said to apply to both the refills and non-refill gas cylinders. They're boxed but not guaranteed to be "new". {For those that don't know the stock for "refills" is the same as the non-refill ones, they're just boxed cylinders you pick up.} I mean some percentage are, they replace them when they get too old etc at an unknown rate but you whether Mitre10 or Briscoes some of the cylinders you buy are just old cylinders refilled in Australia so are arguably not 'new-boxed product'.

                Perhaps this one as well:

Can installed products and services be used for Mitre 10’s Price Guarantee?

Any products sold with installation included in the total price are excluded from our Price Guarantee. For example, a heat pump with installation included in the total price, is not eligible for the Price Guarantee.

I mean I'm fairly sure it's intended to exclude all services, except it's very poorly worded so it doesn't clearly do so. Still, the guarantee itself says

                • If you find a lower price on an identical stocked product locally we will beat it by 15%

so could be said to naturally exclude "services" and only apply to "products". And the "refills" could be argued to be a service rather than a product. Or alternatively something loosely similar to an installation deal {we're taking your empty cylinder for refill and our supplier will refill it if possible and in exchange we give you this already refilled one), even if you're getting a replacement cylinder for your empty one rather than them refilling your cylinder in store. .

  • You can get replacement gas for $27 when handing in an empty one

These are $69 at Noel Leeming now. Would make it $58.65 at Mitre 10 with the price match.

    • Thanks.
I'll expire this post now as it is no longer the cheapest and create a new one for Noels.
