China Southern - a great 4-star airline, has some great fares to Rome. If you're considering travelling around Europe though, also consider the deal to London on Hainan.

  • Do these fares qualify for the free transfer hotels? I thought they only apply for certain classes which doesn't include the cheaper economy fares

    • +1

When I flew them a few years ago (2019) the hotel was free for all classes on layovers longer than 12 hours. I think china southern has a 7 hour layover or an 18 hour layover. There was a choice of 3 hotels one was close to a train station the others not so much. you want to make your way through customs quick because they can take awhile to process. 18 hours in Guangzhou is enough to do a couple things, the zoo there was cheap and had Pandas. Suss out yuan beforehand because places accepting visa or Mastercard were hard to find (even in the airport the McDonald's and KFC didn't accept visa or Mastercard)

  • I’m intrigued, OP. How would you get the free transit hotel? Is it offered during the booking process?

    • Haven't done it myself, but details here : https://www.csair.com/en/tourguide/transit_flow/free/

    • You can book it in advance, research the hotels first some are a pain in the ass and are away from everything like trains etc.

You can book it at the counter after customs but it can take awhile. You will have to go to this counter to get a shuttle bus to the hotel either way.

  • How does help with "travel around Europe"?
Book this then flights around Europe separately then back to Rome to fly back?
Would it not be cheaper just to book multi-flights and fly back to Auckland from your final City?

    • +1

Not really. Well, maybe rarely, but not normally. Open-jawed flights like you're describing are not often cheaper -the airlines seem to want to get you to fly with them both ways, so make one way travel rather high, normally. This works trans-Tasman, where you could just get two one way tickets quite easily, but less commonly to Europe.

My usual advice is find the cheapest return ticket to any city in Europe you're planning on visiting, and then train/bus/fly from there to other cities.
