Jetstar have often lately had Rarotonga on sale at $167 (assume one way, no luggage).
Times can be rough with these guys, so recommend Jetstar there but Air NZ back. Costs more money but the middle of the morning return time is brutal on Jetstar (assuming you then need a connecting flight elsewhere in NZ). Might be ok if you lived in Auckland?
Also re Raro watch for the fact that you often arrive the day before you left, so you'll need to check carefully to book accommodation you can actually go to when you arrive late at night.
