Obviously the previously posted ex-demo leaf's do undercut this at $30k

But this great option for somebody wanting a cheap, new EV which isn't from China, doesn't have the weaknesses of the leaf (Passively cooled battery, CHAdeMO fast charge port).

Range isn't the longest, fast charging isn't the fastest, but the styling is fun, and for the new price it packs a heap of value. It undercuts the yaris ZR hybrid ($38,890 driveaway).

It is very short, so would be great for people who frequently park in tight spaces.

Hard to justify the reason to buy this car at RRP or even at discounted price..

    • +4

Key demographics that it will be attractive to:
      - Those who are attracted to the styling, and want something more interesting & rare than Aqua or a Leaf.
      - Those looking for a very small car to aid parking in small places. This is 219mm shorter than a yaris hyrbid, and 859mm shorter than a leaf.

Obviously it is not going to appeal to those who want to frequently use the back seat, or travel long distances, but there are plenty of households with multiple cars where the larger car carries those duties.

      • Apart from the styling, where would one find themselves needing a very small car to park in small places….? All places have a specific guideline on how big the parking spot should be, which is designed to accommodate for 99% of the cars out there today and that includes normal sized sedans, SUVs, whatever.

        • +4

street parking without bays where either cars come and go so leave weird sized gaps or useless drivers park dead centre of a space you could get two cars in if they had parked considerately.

        • Really useful for parallel parking into smaller spots. Find myself squeezing into them a lot with busy street parks

        • +1

Many area's (including Auckland) don't mark parallel parking spots into bays. (and even those that do, inevitably have people that park poorly, shrinking some bays).

Result of this, is that somebody there are simply more carpark's that you can fit in if you have a very small car.

I used to park on the street parking in freeman's bay every weekday when I went to work for a couple of years. I had a 4.20m long 2006 corolla hatch. Would have been way more of a chore in a sedan, and notably easier in something like this. Means you can park in prime spots that others don't fit into. Can't count the number of times I have left a tight carpark, and somebody in a sedan or ute that was waiting for my space that they couldn't fit into.

These days I rarely parallel park. If you are just going to the mall & supermarket, a regular size car is fine… That said their is some convenience gain from a smaller car. A smaller, sharper turning car, means less precision is needed to do things like go up and down multistory carpark ramps. If you have ever swapped out of a larger ute or van, into a small hatchback, you will find parking way easier. This is a big part of the reason people with poor spatial awareness favor smaller cars.

There are also non public situations where a small car can help. Tiny garage in heritage hours. Regular size garage, but you want to store your whatever in front of the car in the garage. Driveway which is space for a rav4 & a fiat 500 inside the gate, but not a Rav4 and a corolla…

My partner's Smart Fortwo (Electric) is AWESOME for parking in the city because (profanity) always leave gaps that are too small for any other car. There is always a park available for her car.

And it's hilarious to troll busy parking lots by parking next to huge cars and driving all the way in, so people see a free spot, start turning in and have to abort.

However I wouldn't really recommend buying an EV at the moment with the current RUC costs. They're no cheaper to run than an Aqua because of it, honestly I'd recommend an Aqua for any vehicle purchase in its category right now.

          • @danvelopment: Have you seen the insurance cost of aquas nowadays, considering they are one of the top stolen cars in NZ.

            Personally I wouldn't touch them.

            • @ace310: No, I don't insure. I see insurance as gambling.

"I bet you 20:1 that you won't get into a car accident this year that costs you more than $600 to repair, minimum bet $1500"

              House always wins.

              • @danvelopment: Lol. I won't bet that. There are stupid drivers all around and driving an EV definitely puts me on the hate list. Have seen enough road rage for justification of insurance and when family is involved I won't risk it.

                • @ace310: That bet IS the insurance.

That's the bet the insurer is making with you when you buy insurance.

                  20:1 30,000:1,500

And the damage > $600 is the excess, you wouldn't claim a $100 repair if your excess is greater than that.

It's actually worse than that, because it's not 20:1, it's UP TO 20:1

At least when sports betting if they say 20:1 you'll get 20:1.

And when lots of people make claims, the ratio shrinks, the house always wins.

  • A price reduction isn't actually a deal.

And this one shows either a) they were massively overpriced to begin with, b) no one is buying them, or most likely c) both..

    • +9

There have been zero registrations of these over the past 3 months, so b is true at least.

I feel it is reasonable to post price cuts as deals (especially when it causes something notable like becoming the cheapest product in its category).

If we just chase short term discounts, we end up encouraging the Briscoes model of constantly revolving sales which is not great for the consumer.

[edit] - I assume that this is a defecto run out sale. There is no way ~40% discounts can be profitable for Fiat NZ, so I assume once stock they they have committed to importing has been delivered, there will be no more fiat 500e car's imported in NZ.

      • Where did you find stats on new registrations? I've been curious how the Oras, and Tank 300 and 500 have been selling…

        • +1

I'm using an EV specific recourse:

https://evdb.nz/most-popular-evs-nz (note it has an error in it a, and YTD, actually displays the current cullender year, not the year to date).

Ora has had zero registrations in the last 3 months, 1 this year, and 443 all time.

Note that the statistics on EV's are a bit distorted by the demises of the clean car discount. Not only did purchasers that had an EV purchase planned in the next few months bring their purchase forward into 2023 to avail the discount, but also dealerships registered a large portion of whatever stock they had on hand as demo's so they could claim the $7k. Rules are that is OK, as long as the cars aren't sold in the next 3 months (so a clever dealer could stagger their demo registrations across the last 3 months of 2023), meaning some demo's were eligible for resale immediately at the start of 2024. There is still a ton of 2023 pre-registered / ex demo cars (like the leaf deal posted on cheapies), which the dealers will be trying to shift before any unregistered stock, depressing registration stats this year.

For non EV's, you can look here:

I would have seriously considered the Abarth version of this if i hadnt of just committed to buying the 59kw leaf from last weeks posting (which they are still applying to new stock, not ex demos if you negotiate a bit).

So I think these posts are valid

  • Right so can you charge these on normal house outlet, or do you have to install a higher rated unit at in the garage home etc?

    • +1

It depends how many km you drive each day. I have an Ioniq 5 and do between 60 and 100km per day during the week and just charge off a 10 amp plug each night, with it sometimes needing a longer charge on the weekend. The 10 amp charges at about 2.2kW per hour. I'm not sure if this car actually comes with the cable though, they only mention in the specs a "mode 3" cable being provided which I'm guessing is a type 2 to type 2 cable (typically used at public AC charging stations).

    • For any EV an overnight charge from a normal household socket adds about 100km of range.

If you drive less than 100km per day, a normal outlet will be fine. If you return from a long trip, it will take a few nights for the car to get fully charged again. If you travel more than 100km each day, then you will need a higher current solution.

The spec sheet / website doesn't mention a domestic socket charger (but does mention the public AC charging cord). If it is not included you would need to buy it separately:

      https://chargemaster.co.nz/products/portable-chargemaster-cl…

My garage had (had added a new circuit now) a single 16A circuit, so way back when I parked a i3 in the garage, I needed to stop the car charging to run the tumble dryer.

I installed a 32A EVSE next to my driveway for our leaf. We did fine with 8A charging out a window for ~three years, but this is much more covenant. Our leaf is very short range, so we can top off in the middle of the day much quicker. And when we have family visit with a long range EV they can get a full charge done overnight.

    • You can charge any EV from normal outlet. It's just slow

  • +1

Might take one of these for a test drive, if only to try out the ridiculous external speaker that makes a 'legal limit' exhaust noise to make it sound like a petrol engine.

  • +1

Yeah I think $60-75k for a modernised/electric Bambina was always going to be a very hard sell. $35 is not too bad - pity about the short range tho.

  • The cheek to call it a POP and offer such incredibly boring colours (mostly GRAY).
I'm probably the target market for this, I do really like the styling. Why not lean into it more.

    • I'm guessing they want the bolder colors as ABARTH / Scorpionissima exclusives?

Adrenaline Red, Acid Green & Poison blue….

  • Casual racism towards Chinese yet China is providing affordable and long warranty cars to New Zealand market.

    • Nothing racist here.

Some people don't want a car from China due to quality concerns.

Some don't want to support a regime which is associated with human rights abuses

Others don't want to support a regime which is not respecting the territory off the Philippines (a country I have ties to).
