Of course there's no discounts on the small :(

I don't renew until January, but I am very happy they have added an 32GB plan, 15 GB was becoming a bit problematic for my wife & they charge like crazy for additional data packs.

    • +1

I thought 15GB is plenty, wondering what do you guys do to use up that many data if you dont mind answering? With kids youtubing all the time, the most we use are around 8Gb/month.

      • +8

        adult stuff

      • +1

15 GB is fine for me.

For typical months (with no travel) it is fine for my wife, as the bulk of her usage is via our home wifi.

But when she was in hospital (and wasn't aware the hospital has free wifi), she managed to blow through her 15GB in a couple of days. Combination of a lot of video call's, and a lot of video heavy social media. Even with wifi use when available and being carful, once she hit her first warning, she still purchased multiple data packs.

When we do domestic travel she has to be pretty careful not to blow through her data.

      • HD Audio streaming via Tidal
Usual usage is around 25 ish

        • Can't you download the playlists?

          • @kfr23: You can but i always forget to add some stuff to the playlists.
Back in the day i would barely touch 500MB but websites are much more heavy than they used to be..

  • Does Kogan have any difficulty getting SMS verification texts?

    • +2

Nope. Replying is only thing that's problematic.

      • +4

Not anymore, shortcodes work fine these days (e.g. doctors, radio stations etc)

        • … shortcodes work fine these days (e.g. doctors, radio stations etc)

Just to be explicit, you can now REPLY to a shortcode SMS using your Kogan SIM?

@sirhelenclark: I had trouble replying to premium numbers. Has this changed? I know the free ones are ok but there is no option to reply to the paid ones, even if i wanted to pay..

            • @sirhelenclark:

              Yes

              Cool - Thanks!

        • Just sent a STOP message to Gull but not getting any reply don't know how to verify if that worked.

          • @kyogui: That's just gull, same happened to me and I knew it worked when the next deal came and got no text. Other 4-digit numbers do reply to you if they're set up to do so

I guess this is it for this year? No BOGOF huh..

    • Usually do something for Black Friday too but that may be something similar to this I would imagine.

      • hmm.. Looking at the history, they do BOGOF deal around 3-4 months after their lower % discount.
Last 40% off discount was in Jan 2024, then there was BOGOF deal in March 2024.

        Bit of a gamble …

  • My wife and I have got a plan until mid November. On the fence whether I should take this one or wait… Last year we have a BOGOF deal which was better.
    What are your thoughts?

    • +2

You have until 30th September to activate the plan so that would mean sacrificing approx 6 weeks if you are a mid Nov rollover.
Probably worth it if this meets your needs for only a small loss of your current plan

    • There is good odds of a Black Friday sale.

    • Ours are due beginning of December, i'll be waiting till much closer to the time. Worst case float on prepay till the next deal. They don't seem to be tight with them.

      • Yeah I think I'll wait. How do you go onto prepay monthly? I assumed that they would extend me for another year if I had Auto Renewal enabled?

        • You will extend another year if auto renewal is turned on.
I make sure to turn this off every time so that it only renews when you want it to

          • @bigcheese: Thanks, yeah that's what I thought. How would I switch to pay monthly though? There's a button Renew or Buy Prepay Plan, I guess via there. Reluctant to press it right now in case I accidentally switch to pay monthly now :)

            • +1

@boland: Yes. Choose ‘Renew or buy prepay plan’ and select which one you want.
Remember if you have any balance left on your current plan you will lose that straight away so wait until it expires or at least close to expiry.
As soon as you apply a new plan auto renewal automatically turns back on do make sure you turn it off after.

  • What's the normal price on Extra Large 365 plan?

Contemplating changing on my current large matariki plan which doesn't have an end date……

    • It's not usually offered.
It was available on a 30 day plan only previously but I can't see it listed there anymore.
Only guessing that the 40% off on that plan is based on 12 months of the 30 day plan.

    • $294

      • What is the normal price after 365 days?

        • sorry I meant $490, price when in 2023

    • Pretty sure the end date for the matariki plan is whenever you cancel.

    • I paid $330 (full price) last year for the Extra Large 365 Day plan.

    • +1

It's advertised as 40% off, which would make the normal price $490

  • I went to get the Extra Large and the page can not be found… was working 10 mins ago!

  • How is the speed?

    • On my 4g phone I get 39.6mbps download/10.4mbps upload

    • Basically as fast as you need, depending on reception. I got ~ 300 Mbps with good 5G connection

  • How painful is the not being able to reply to text services?

    • +2

Non-issue for me. I only get them when a doctor/dentists asks me to confirm my appointment. I just pick up the phone and call them

    • +5

No longer an issue, I've been able to reply to them for over a month

    • I've been with them for almost 2 years, and in that time there's only been one occasion where I wasn't able to reply.

  • +4

FYI you can now text 4-digit short codes with Kogan. I found this out a month ago so not sure when they changed it. It was never a problem but it is nice to be able to unsubscribe from some things or reply to the occasional doctors text if needed (and enter radio comps haha)

  • Think this is a sign that BOGOF is over

With the mobile market all upping prices etc, think deals won’t get much better

    • They have done % discounts before, i.e. the below 30 - 50% in 2023.

      https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=164&topicid=31…

But it does seem too good to be true for this level of discounting to continue long term.

    • AUS gets a better small offer for $10AUD/mo with more data, nz isn't as competitive for mobile sadly.

  • time to downgrade…who's got money to throw at these when nz have the world's highest revenue per GB

Should I sign up to Contact Mobile 300 credits / Electric Kiwi 3 months free and waiting for the BOGOF deal this year?

    • Haven't heard good things about EK's customer service.

    • +2

      No one knows for sure.
That could work out the best deal but then again Kogan could also not offer anything around Black Friday.
It's a gamble whichever way you go.

All I know for sure is that the number and value of deals across all sorts of products has decreased dramatically over the past few years.

      • +1

Totally agree! Deals have really dried up in the past few years.
It’d be a real bummer if they don’t offer that on Black Friday!
        Fingers crossed for something decent!

  • +3

If you have a dual-SIM phone and don't mind swapping SIMs every month, you can get the $5 new member deal from Kogan every month.

I've been doing this for about 4 years now.

    • Lol yay to hell with iphone users

      • +1

Alternatively you can buy a USB-powered 4G WiFi modem/router connected to a powerbank in your bag, and use the WiFi hotspot from the modem.

You can find them on AliExpress for as low as $20. Do check the 4G bands are supported before you buy however.

    • +1

What about the phone number and text & call? Did you port your number over or?

      • You keep your primary phone number on sim 1, and you put the disposable kogan on sim 2. Set sim 1 for text and call, use sim 2 for data.

        • So I need to have another plan/network just for text & call? Any recommendation?

          • @doubledippps: I use Warehouse Mobile for my primary SIM, which lets you top up for as low as $5. I hardly use it as I stay in touch with friends and family on Whatsapp, and for any calls or texts to strangers I use the Kogan number.

    • +1

It’s quite inconvenient that you keeps registering new account and entering your credit card details

    • Do you use the same details when ordering it? Can you batch order the sims or get one once a month?

  • +1

Can anybody talk about Roaming while on Kogan? When you land in the new country, does it just work?

Only asking as it sounds like it is hard to reach customer service, sometimes. Great news about the shortcodes though, that makes it a lot easier to recommend to people.

    • Recently came back from gold coast. Roaming does not work at all (data that is. Phone and sms are fine)

      • Thanks for the info. Any explanation from Kogan?

        • +1

We had data-roaming issue too when we were at Aussie last year, despite me paying for the add-on before I left.

Kogan support told me that they had technical issues back then. We were reimbursed.

          Maybe it never works!

          • @cruelsummer2: As Kogan is from Australia, this does not bode well for other countries

      • Roaming won't work with Kogan without the Roaming Add-on pack.
As this is a prepay plan you are limited to making calls, sending txt and using data within NZ only (although you can call & txt Oz). Wi-Fi calling does work though if you can get connected to a wifi network.
The roaming packs are expensive: https://koganmobile.co.nz/add-ons/international-roaming-add-… so better going with a local SIM if in Oz.

        • Cheers @bigcheese Slightly more expensive than Skinny (90c more).

Discount not really enough to tempt one away from the $17/28days Skinny prepay (maybe I'm greedy).

I use eSIMs now but if I can get wificalling to work on Skinny in ordr to receive texts and calls…

Only thing that might tip the scale in Kogan's vafour as they've solved the short code issue.

      • Same issue in fiji, Followed instructions here and it worked:

        https://help.koganmobile.co.nz/hc/en-us/articles/36003308621…

    • My son went to Europe last year and roamed ok with Kogan. There was some phone setting he needed to change but he compared his settings to his mates and it worked fine.

    • +1

Haven't tested roaming on Kogan, but VoWiFi works from an international connection. So without paying for any roaming fees, as long as I have a data connection (say hotel wifi) I can still make and receive calls and texts on my Kogan sim for no extra charge.

      • +1

So, can you use eSIM for data AND still get calls/texts without roaming?

        Thanks.

        • +1

          Yes

        • +2

Yes, but this works only on iPhone. iPhones support calls and texts over the other SIM's cellular data, whereas Android devices, like my Samsung S23, may not support this feature.

        • +1

Yes but it depends on your phone. It can be kinda glitchy. I got it working on Android.

    • +1

If you have an esim capable phone, I would actually just buy those esim travel data packages. They are much cheaper and better.

    • +1

Tested in Fiji and the USA.

Didn't initially work, but support gave me the following link and I followed the steps to configure internet access. Once that was done it worked fine.

      https://help.koganmobile.co.nz/hc/en-us/articles/36003308621…

  • Dont know if i should move to mightymobile. I do need data for my current role and have exhaused 15gb for couple of months. But i just did a speedtest on Kogan data and its 250mbps. Mightymobile is 10mbps capped. Could go with extra large but the price difference between that and mighty fast plan is minimal Any suggestions?

    • +1

10Mbps is likely a bit slow in the current era, but their 50 Mbps plan is only $10/mo more, and that speed is sufficient for most applications.

Obviously the Kogan XL (32 GB) plan is going to be way cheaper than mighty mobile, and more than double what you have now, but it comes down to how much you value unlimited mobile internet. There is something nice about just not needing to manage mobile data use at all, when I have had unlimited sims overseas.

  • Not as good as last years. I'm pretty sure last year it was 50% off and you had longer to activate (end of the year if I recall).

My Kogan plan stops just before New Years, but if I take up this offer, I'm doubling up for 3 months! Not very good value.

EDIT: Turns out that was a Black Friday deal.

    • You might want to wait for the christmas / boxing day sale. Last year it started on the 22nd of december.

  • I'm glad to see the extra large is back again.
It wasn't available last black Friday.
Does anyone know Kogan would offer esim like oz.

    • Not at the moment.
      Physical SIM only in NZ

  • Have just purchased a 180gb pack and have 15 days left until the plan finishes. Does anyone know if I enter the voucher code now if it will renew in 2 weeks time or starts from the date the code is entered?

Looking at the website it would seem it starts from day code is entered so will loose remaining days left, anyone tried?

    • Yes if you enter the code now it starts immediately, you lose the days you have left.

  • +2

They always had BOGOF for the past few years, wondering what changed that they've started offering 40% off only. 15GB plan worked out to be $165 for the year which was perfect. Mine expires end of September, will port over to Skinny then port number back to Kogan. Most likely will keep doing this until BOGOF so hopefully around Black Friday or end of the year.

    • Kiwi mobile has 3 months free if you like.

    • Probably shrinkflation. Companies cutting things back as much as possible to profit.

    • +1

Thinking about doing the same, how often can you port a number to a different provider?

  • Is this their birthday sales or just a 40% sales?

    • +1

      Kogan Mobile’s 5th Birthday Sale

Don't worry about what they call it though, it doesn't really mean anything.
In the last year they have had everything from 20%-50% to BOGOF deals. It actually makes sense to mix it up so that they are not too predictable in terms of timing.
There will be other deals this year I'm sure - it's what they consist of and the timing that no-one really knows.

  • +1

Cheers Bigcheese 🧀. My current Kogan plan runs out mid November . Ive decided to grab another large plan , and will renew before end Septemember. Its worth losing 6 weeks of the current plan to get this ..

For anyone on the fence about Kogan mobile I've got no complaints it's been awesome

  • Ooh thanks for sharing. I feel more comfortable doing this than BOGOF, and I'm glad to see about the short codes. Just picked up a large plan, bye Skinny.

    • I'm on the fence… Were you on a high prepay with Skinny?
