That is, until they tell you that three out of four tyres are slightly grazed on the side wall and need replacing but you'll get better fuel economy and save yourself a visit if we replace all 4 now, and you need nitrogen otherwise they'll be flat in a year, and your wheel alignment is way out so you'll be burning up to 23% extra fuel unless it's fixed not to mention the extra wear on your shiny new tyres, and by the way their battery test says your battery health is at 32%, but don't worry because they can sell you a new high performance battery on special this week only for the very special price of $349 plus GST.

Don't get sucked in, fellow Cheapies, Tony's is all about the upsell!

Hah, that last sentence speaks volumes to me. I've just got new tyres for our car and Tonys was one of the places I got a quote from. Cue several calls from their sales reps spouting the usual salesman line "I've just had a chat with my manager and at his discretion I am able to offer you 4 tyres for $X. These tyres will be the absolute best for your car blah blah blah"

  • I've heard about some bad practices at tony's tyres.

But the main red flag here is that 1 hour???? WTF. I've spent 2 and half hours at VTNZ with 2 hours sitting and waiting in my car. WTF are they doing to the car taking 1 hour for a WoF?

    • WOF inspector here.

Vtnz and testing stations have dedicated lanes with brake rollers and pits solely for inspection and usually double team the vehicle reducing the time spent on the inspection.

Smaller garages usually run one inspector using a hoist which takes considerably longer, at least double the time which is why they're saying one hour opposed to the 30 mins or so you've seen at VTNZ.

  • I would rather spend $20 more to avoid any pressure/troubles.

  • A deliberate trap for the newbies whom think they are getting a bargin. Why not offering free WOF.

Tony is notoriously known for up selling you $$$$ for something that isn't needed.

There is an old saying "there is no free lunch".

  • $39 is not even cheap

    • When VTNZ is charging $83, and VINZ $86, yeah $39 is cheap.

  • Tony doesn't do price match when they specifically advertise so. I wouldn't trust these guys at all.
