Got one of these a few months ago. Really good value at this price.

  • Well shit. Just bought this last weekend for my parents from Briscoes.

  • With the $15 off, is that online only or online and instore? And is it even doable online? Just wondering what their process is for an online price-match.

    • Voucher is pretty clear that it can be used online or instore. Not sure if you are able to stack it with an online price match though.

From my understanding the online price match process requires you to call them, so the operator may be able to do something on their end we cannot do the storefront.

By phone you can Price Guarantee and coupon stack but can't Afterpay.

  • Fairly sure I saw this one at Riccarton JBHiFi on clearance for under $500.

But I wasn't really looking. If you're in CHCH and planning on getting one if may be worth looking there first (and actual store clearance I believe, so not on their site)

This is the cheapest it’s ever been, even pre covid and the inflation of coffee machines at home. Bought this a month ago with a price match of $610 at Briscoes, hell of a machine - totally changed the coffee game at home.

If you’ve been on the fence - just do it today.

  • Is there smaller versions for single ppl in tiny apts?
I really don't want those pods ones, too much waste products with that

  • Barista express is definitely the gateway machine!

I mean I got a 3D printer because of it……Printing WDTs and other accesories definitely handy though 🤣

  • My last one of these lasted 7 years, can't complain about that I think. Got a replacement immediately, they seem to have not changed much over the years. I'd recommend the polished metal one over the black as the black is just a paint over the top which comes off over time, revealing the metal underneath, doesn't look the best.

For anyone interested the cost of a coffee including the machine is $1.40 per coffee

    Beans 20g $8/200g 80c per coffee
    Milk 250ml $4.01/2L 50c per coffee
Machine life 7 years 2 coffees per day, $517.50 10c per coffee

    • Where do you get your beans from and what brands do you recommend? Are the Market ones any good?

The key to getting good coffee from the machine is beans that are recently roasted. Which means a roaster who will send them out to you after roasting - or buying from their store. I recommend https://goodfortunecoffee.co.nz I tried a few of the Wellington roasters - Havana, Rich, Peoples, and Good Fortune were my favourite. I get the Fire Cracker.

      • i seen someone recommend the bulk beans they sell at the warehouse one time, not sure what they are called though but it was a huge bag for cheap

        • Yeah its come up on here a few times now - look for Market Kitchen Coffee Beans Dark Roast 1kg

They are apparantly roasted by one of the good places down in Wellington so in theory there is a a level of compentancy here - weather the beans are up to that roasters usual standards I can't say as I'm not a coffee snob by any measure.

I personally use these beans based on those previous recommendations since they are so cheap. They are not as good as some of the more expensive / premium brands I've tried, but to be honest at 1/2 or even 1/3 of the price of many of the good options its a pretty low bar, and I find them comparible to most supermarket options (or better in some cases)

At $20 for a kg, its worth a punt for anyone wanting to save some money for something thats good enough

The market 1kg bag didn’t work well with my barista express impress. Even though i picked furthest possible expiry date, the beans were not fresh enough. My machine couldn’t reach espresso pressure even on the most fine grind size. I even tried changing internal burr setting from default 6 down to 3. Then i ordered flight coffee beans which had roast date printed on it (unlike the market beans that only shows expiry date) and it was a game changer, im getting very nice shots out of my machine now

          • @offroad: The express impress comes with both types of portafilter baskets right (the open single walled type, and the closed bottom dual wall type?)
Cheaper beans would likely benefit from the dual wall basket

            • @Tmurder91: Yes it comes with 4 baskets, yes using the pressurised basket made a difference to some extent but still it was a very runny 20sec shot

          • @offroad: Interesting. I am using the market kitchen beans and changed the burr to 4. Finally reached the expresso range but I feel it could be better. The coffee tastes good (but not amazing) with a bit of sweetness. Maybe I should try fresher beans. Flight sounds amazing but I prefer to get it from supermarket, less chore for me 😅

@Superpower21: Supreme is also good which is at supermarkets as long as u can find fresh roast date. Flight coffee i just ordered online and ir came within 2days, got 4 bags of 250gms for $42.25 NZD, freezed 3 bags, using 1

              • @offroad: $42.25 is a bit much for me. My friend uses supermarket beans on his commercial machine at home and told me I can go with shaky isles, karajoz barista. If not available, then laffare primo. He said supreme is good but less crema. I am going to slowly try them all out.

@Superpower21: Many coffee bean shops now offer free shipping - Flight is one such example, worth getting fresh beans!

I used to get it from a local coffee roaster but the price became too much, so now I just get La Farre or Havana from the supermarket, although I always have milk based coffees so the shot is far less sensitive than if you're having an espresso shot. Supermarket coffee used to be garbage but imo it's improved over the years, some are still terrible though (looking at you Jed's)

  • I seem to have lost my portafilter in a move, tried a bottomless filter and it’s not great. Any recommendations for a new one? Or bite the bullet and buy the original again? Thanks

    • What's the issue with bottomless? I switched to bottomless and have never looked back. Cleanup has also been a breeze in comparison.

    • The AliExpress two spout ones work pretty well, slightly different to the original, but around half the price.
