I did post a similar deal only a few weeks ago but the prices have dropped into the $300s so it's worth a second look.

5-Star Hainan Airlines - they fly to more cities, but I checked a few to get an indication of price. You can always adjust the dates/cities to suit your preferences.

  • I just can not believe those prices!!!!

    • I think a lot of Chinese companies have got heavy debt-servicing obligations right now and are doing things that wouldn't make sense normally. It's hard to know exactly because there isn't much transparency, but there are lots of economic levers being pulled.

  • Is that even economically viable for airlines?

    • I suspect it's heavily subsidised by the Chinese government.

    • They could also be carrying freight. Those aliexpress, temu and shein ordera need to be fulfilled somehow.

    • According to ChatGPT a one way trip from Auckland to Shanghai on a Boeing 787-9 uses 75-95k NZD in fuel. That's maybe $250-300 per person if the planes are full (300 seats), and double it for a round trip.

But airlines are more complex than that as they carry cargo and many seats will be sold for higher. Filling otherwise empty seats is usually worth it even if they're cheap as the plane would be going already.

Can you help me find return flights to China to any city for the Labour weekend? Yes I wanna go and return all in one weekend for fun.

    • Fun? FUN?!

      YOUR BUTT WILL DROP OFF!

      • It won't just came back after a 7 day holiday.

        • Actually any weekend+1 day for 399 I'll do it if someone can help me find it. So far not much luck.

    • |$647|27 Oct to 30 Oct isn't as cheap as you wanted, but are the dates okish? I'll run a script.

      • @beatthatflight yes, okish but obviously the less annual leave I need to take the better. Keen to go to Shanghai, take a photo of the bund, and then come back home. Why not? :D

          |$541|27 Oct to 30 Oct getting cheaper

I was in Shanghai at the bund last month. I found it to be really boring. But if you do want photos, the general seaside area is extremely busy, i.e. difficult to get any good pictures. Instead, I went up to two different rooftop bars along the bund and this is one of the best travel hacks I have. One of the bars was extremely dead, with barely anyone there, the other one was fairly busy. In either case, you can get extremely good pictures considering you are on the rooftop of a building overlooking the bund. In both places, I didn't spend a cent and spent maybe an hour overlooking the views on the bund for free.

          • @Bill: Thanks Bill, could you let me know which roof top bars you speak of?

            • +1

@Discount Code: The first was called house of roosevelt, the second i think was called bar kev. They are both quite hard to find, there is no information about them from the street. You kind of need to know where you are going. If you have a search online for these two places, you can see the views I am talking about.

  • @beatthatflight any deals for next year Christchurch to Japan?

    • Nothing that stands out at present, although China Southern around $1098 return isn't too shabby, in Feb: https://bookings.beatthatflight.com.au/flights/CHC1702tyo130…

      • Thanks, I'll be keeping an eye on your posts in the near future!

    • Fiji is around 1200 which is not terrible if you cant wait and don't want to go via China.
No real concerns on our trip however the arrival time into Nadi on the way back at 4-5am is quite fun..

Just back from Shanghai on Hainan Airlines.
My 2 cents is that this is definitely not a 4 star airline.
While they don't mention it, they do not have a direct flight to Shanghai as it requires transit to Shenzen and Haikou and it is not a fly though. Meaning, you will need to clear immigration, claim your luggage and then check in again in your onward journey.
The return flight is at 2:55 am from Haikou, so when you land in Haikou from Shanghai on your way back, you need to do the same thing (claim luggage and check in again followed by clearing immigration). Definitely not fun at that time in the night.
Also, they do not cater for special meals. Having said that, flight is cheapass, so can't complain

    • How long were your transits in Haikou? I'm wondering if the 3-4hr times given for a lot of these connections is long enough to do the whole queue-scan-queue-scan process.

If you bought it all on the one ticket you can have your luggage checked right through, that was my experience just the other week.

3-4 hours is PLENTY. There is no much to do at the airport. I arrived via Auckland, then went on a domestic flight. The whole process took me 30 mins.

        • Thats odd. I also had all in one ticket. But I was made to check out and check in both times.

      • Yes, you have enough time to check out and check in. (Had 2.5 hours in Shenzen (onward) and 3 hours in Haikou (on return). Its just a hassle especially because these are at odd hours.

    • Interesting, just came back too on Hainan Airlines and had my luggage checked through to my end destination, all on the one ticket.

    • No complaints just sharing my experience, there is a cost to be paid for being a cheapie.

100% agree with you ssha324, I was Flying Bangkok->Haikou->Auckland with a long layover.
Check-in staff at Bangkok took too long because they were unable to send my luggage directly to Auckland, even after trying for 1 hour they ended up telling me that I had to claim luggage and clear immigration.
Without internet 12 hours seemed very long and I was unable to figure out what are the activities I can do while waiting, so ended up waiting at the airport with my luggage.

  • Thanks Op, any flight for 7 days trip mid Nov or early Dec? to Chongqing

  • Any cheap flights to Bangladesh end of December, return after a month?

  • Nice catch @beatthatflight
