    I used Klook for booking activities when I went last. Make sure you have WeChat, AliPay and WhatsApp setup before you go. I had a local SIM and it was pointless, it didn't work for all the usual apps you are used to, the great firewall! VPNs are also picky when they want to work. Roaming on 2degrees (although expensive) just worked with no VPN. eSIMs also work fine, but I didnt find a good deal to cover two weeks of high usage. Uber is not a thing, DiDi in Alipay works fine only used it once becasue the Subway is totally easy and can get you everywhere. There is also trip.com which I used to book a train ticket to go from Shanghai to Beijing. When I went to the Great Wall in Beijing on a tour group, goto to the Mutianyu Great Wall rather than the main one, it felt like I was alone during parts of it. Super challenging to climb! There is also a little town to buy things, all junk but the workers will yell at you to buy. Funny at first :P

    Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City I went on a small 4-Hour Small Group Tour, also booked via Klook. Worth it! Skipping all the crowds, my tour guide was excellent. I would also recommend going to Olympic Park, and take the subway out there. I spend almost my whole day just wandering the park. It's huge! I also paid to walk to the top of the bird's nest, a super cool experience. I would also recommend you check out cashrewards.com.au when using Klook & Trip.com. You get a little back, I also used Agoda to book hotels in China, If you do use Agoda try a book on a Friday, they usually have 10%+ cashback via Cashrewards. If you get a chance to go to Shanghai and need a rest day, Check out The life spa in Shanghai, it was a weird experience at first, but I enjoyed it so much I went back the following day. The buffet! The Spa! The unlimited drinks and smoothies, trust me. There is nothing like it in NZ. Think Korean Spa but 5 Star with a epic buffet. If you go to Disney in Shanghai, it's next-level busy. I suggest you get a guide, I did (although I didn't book it my friend did) The guide takes you through the park super early in the morning to get on all the rides ahead of peak crowds. 8-11:30 am is when you do everything, the remainder of the day you just roam free and hope you get another ride on something :) If you want to Eat while at Disney, leave the main park and go to Disney Town, heaps cheaper (although still pricey) You can just go back into the park when you're done.

    What I did notice going to Beijing/Shanghai was everyone said hello to me in Russian. It was odd at first, but there are so many Russians there they just assume.

    I am heading back to China in June 2025, I cant wait for some epic deals to pop up early next year for June

    I went to Beijing -> Chongxing -> Chengdu day trip (via bullet train) -> Shanghai in 14 days so I didn't have to pay for Tourist Visa

    Beijing Highlights
    - Universal studio (By far the quietest Universal I've been too - max wait times were 20 min for popular rides like Harry Potter)
    - Great Wall - This was truly amazing - I went to the Mutianyu section - You take the chairlift up and you take a luge/ toboggan to get back down!
    - Summer Palace - Another awesome spot to walk around and explore - recommend
    - Beijing Olympic Tower - Another awesome place to check out, awesome high veiws of beijings olympic park area
    - Temple of Heaven
    - 789 Street - Its a decommissioned military zone with bunkers and train carriages that have been converted to this awesome hip / trendy neighbourhood, Think modern art, coffee, smash burgers, craft beer, vintage clothing etc
    - Peking Duck - Beijing is home to peking duck, I got a whole duck with pancakes etc for $40 NZD - It was the best peking duck I've ever had

    Tips/ Additional-
    - Most people I encountered don't speak english (apart from Shanghai) so have you Google Translate / Translate app ready for any interactions
    - some of the main attractions and activities require booking at least 1 week in advance for your timeslot on the day - Things like T Square, Forbidden City, musuems etc
    - There are security cameras EVERYWHERE - I know the surveillance is a bit of a controversial topic but I felt extremely safe walking anywhere - Probably more safe than I did walking around in Japan
    - Sounds like they are doing alot of initiatives to encourage foreign tourists - They are allocating % of tickets sold daily to foreigners (ie. Forbidden City) and implementing public transport passes like 'Beijing Pass'
    - 99% of things we paid for were done via Alipay (even small market vendors down side streets used Alipay over cash)
    - Basically all tickets/ excursions are bound to your Passport number (even things like Disneyland) so make sure you always carry your passport
    - Klook is your friend - You can book alot of activities and excursions using this App
    - Sort your VPN beforehand (only a few work well - I used Mullvad VPN - Its cheap for a 30 day pass)
    - I used Airalo with an eSIM and had unlimited data at high speeds - I think it only cost like $60nzd
    - Public transport is easy enough to use to use but Didi (Chinas Uber) is so cheap I ended up using that - Cost around $5NZD for a 30-45min ride

    Also worth noting I did the classic Japan via Fiji Airways (Another cheapies special) earlier in April and while I did love Japan and the culture/people I have to say I enjoyed China more for the following reasons
    - China is massive - No area ever felt too crowded - In Japan I felt like I could not escape any of the crowds and alot of the areas you'd be shoulder to shoulder with other tourists - I read that there is an undertourism issue in China so that probably played a part (I think Great wall had 60% of the tourists it once had pre COVID)
    - Everything is significantly cheaper - Food you'd pay around $5-$10 for a massive dish of chicken and rice or dumplings or noodles etc
    - Accomodation is around $50-80 for a central spot in a private queen size suite close to public transport / shopping areas
    - Transport is cheap - $1-2 for subway / bus or $5 for a 30min didi ride, bullet train and internal flights were around $100-150 city to city (but distance dependant)

        1. It’s very safe there in general. Crime like Robbery is very serious. (3 years -> life imprisonment or death penalty). That’s why people say feeling very safe there because it’s not worth for committing the crime + security cameras and policemen everywhere.

        2. Hotel is so cheeeeaap in off peak season like Oct -> March. l used GrabOne like app and booked 5 star hotel with Swimming Pool, Gym, 2 people breakfast buffet and 2 people hotpot dinner combo for 120 NZD in total a night. For such hotels, there is no reason to worry about safety.

        3. But I never used hostel and only used airbnb only once, so can’t comment on that. But given some great hotels are so cheap, I recommend go for those.

        Additional tips:
        1. Don’t fully trust online rating there. Some of the small hotels, they pay for random people to give good ratings. Book famous ones, for economic one 60-80 nzd range go for JI Hotel or Hanting hotel(very decent hotels) or for more luxury go for Hilton or local 5 star hotels(5 star hotels are rated by officials) they can’t go wrong.

        1. For luxury hotels, you could ask the reception saying “I saw people online saying you could possibly upgrade room if you have available rooms”. In my case they happily upgraded for me for free for a room which is double of the cost of my original booking.

      I am going to China for 5 days. How do I get the 15 day Visa? Do I need to fill a form at immigration or in advance? as I plan to visit Hong Kong and Macau (day trips) as well and return to China

        If you're going to Hong Kong and Macau make sure you get the multiple entry visa - not sure if the 15 day free allows this. Don't get caught out on a single entry visa where you enter China then HK or Macau for a day trip then cannot re-enter China again.

        Haven't had this personally happen but was on a forum reading it live last week as it happened to an American tourist.

        Any specific questions I'd recommend you ring up the Wellington embassy they actually pick up the phone and are willing to answer any visa related questions. The Auckland consulate is usually too busy to pick up to answer any questions

      Many of the OTAs (online travel agencies) linked look rough, or have interesting upsells. I don't think their money is usually spent on customer service, and they make their money on upsells/charging for changes, seat selection, etc. I have a write up about them here: https://www.beatthatflight.com.au/index.php/about/ - as long as you read every question carefully and keep an eye on the total, you can get great deals.

    Hi - appreciate your work, just had a quick question

    Planning to honeymoon in Japan next year but also wouldn’t mind incorporating a small trip to China beforehand and I think these deals would be fantastic to incorporate if we can

    Is there any rules or regulations you’re aware of that would prevent us from purchasing a round trip to China and then a round trip from China to Japan for the honeymoon portion? Would be NZ -> China -> Japan -> China -> NZ

      Your trip will be fine, you can stay in China for maximum of 15 days for each entry, people can go to Hong Kong and reenter China to get another 15 days.
