For example: Melbourne to Athens $480 one way.

So adding:

  • Great find! Anything similar for Japan or Korea?

    • If you are happy to go via oz , checkout jetstar and scoot prices

  • Nice price. I paid $950 for my one way flight to Europe last year. Although, it wasn't the cheapest I could get it as I paid slightly more to get a longer layover and I needed a specific airport.

This is a good hack, but make sure you do 2 things:

    1. Ensure there's a minimum of 3 hours between each arrival and departure. Your bags won't be through-checked, you'll have to check out, go through customs & immigration, then check-in, go through security, etc. each time you enter a country. Also, account for disruptions and potential visa-based delays, etc. Airlines won't check you through from A to Z if you buy separate tickets. And if there's a disruption to one flight on one ticket, they will not get you all the way from A to Z, either. They'll just get you to the destination on each individual ticket. So, if the first flight is delayed and you miss your next flight, you'll need to pay out of pocket (and right then) to rebook… & so on.

    2. Buy travel insurance - I know of at least some that don't care about whether you've booked your itinerary altogether or separately. So, even if you end up paying in the moment to rebook for a missed flight (provided it's not your error like being simply late), they could reimburse you.

I would say 5 hours to be on the safer side.

Melbourne, yes. Have done so. If you routed via SYD instead, note that they kick you out overnight.

https://www.sleepinginairports.net/ used to be one of my favourite resources back when I was a solo traveller :P

  • The example (Mel - Ath) is now showing $605 as lowest

    • Showing $401 for me now

  • I did this routes in 2023, at a similar price, a $910 return from SYD to Berlin plus a 400ish return from AKL to SYD. I would say a long stopover in SIG was nice but it was a very very tiring and long journey.
