    Do any of these flights line up with the current Australia return for free sale? Might be a cheap way to score flights to Asia.

    Edit: So far Auckland - Singapore is achievable for $400 or so return with dates in May (Checked outbound AKL-MEL 4th May $199, MEL-SIN 5th May $199, return flights are both free on 8, 11, 12, 13, 14 etc of May).

    Only downside is 12 hour roughly layover in each direction in Melbourne. If you want these flights you have to book separately to get both return for free deals.

      Nice, looks like Japan for under $500 too, which is a sweet price. Haven't had time to check properly though.

      • how do you search for flights to japan?

          Book NZ <-> AU and then AU <-> Japan

        • @Shaw: doesnt seem to have free return flight, $500 to japan from melbourne, $500 back AUD. But you're much more exp'd at this than I am, so I may well be looking at the wrong page

          @justaddwater:

          Oh sorry, I was sure I saw it on the list, must have been somewhere else.

          Ahh, try Gold Coast.

        • @Shaw: ding ding ding gold coast -> tokyo

        • @justaddwater:

          Off on a holiday?

        • @Shaw: nah, just living vicariously through anonymous gold coastians who are able to go to tokyo return cheap.

          flight to and from nz doesn't work out, flight timing doesn't align. although it's still ~750 akl->GC->tokyo->GC->akl if you can make it work with return baggage (if you sleep in gold coast airport overnight waiting for you flight the next day)

          @justaddwater:

          Ahh, fair call. We booked AKL <-> NRT last year, was heaps of fun, around $750 return with bags. No big layovers though.

      • Looks like it would cost around $530 with $350 Gold Coast to Tokyo, and $180 or so Auckland to Gold Coast, 12+ hour layovers again though!

    • You're probably better off going to KL via Air Asia, and then take the bus (5-7 hours) to Singapore.

      • Probably be about the same amount of time doing it that way, but would be slightly more expensive (KL flights were around $200 O/W from memory?)

        • Actually you'll be better off flying from KLIA to Singapore. Tigerair fares can be as low as 50 MYR (NZ$17) one way. 12 hours layover is IMO a killer if you're flying long-haul in a low cost airline.

          @Avantime:

          Yea, Airasia go even lower than that, we got 10RM flights to a bunch of places, you could even fly to Johor and bus from there to Singapore.

          12 hours is pretty long, but is enough time to go land side and check out where you happen to be at, we are doing that in Jan, have about 15 hour layover is Melbourne, so going to goto the city, have a look around, meet some people, etc. Wouldn't do it if we had kids though.

        Jetstar fly Dreamliner MEL-SIN which although is still bare basic is much more comfortable than the AirAsia flight MEL-KUL.

        At the moment AirAsia's prices for May also appear to be around $300-400 each way, so double the price, although AirAsia do frequently have sales which may bring the price down.

        • We actually got free movies on our flight from SIN to MEL a while back, no idea why, they just came on at some point.
