You'll have to put a credit card to do the trial. It's $10USD a month after that.
You can call 56 countries both mobile and landline (including NZ). No need for an Internet connection. The app (iOS and Android) gets your phone to dial a local number which then seamlessly connects you to the international number you are dialing. Alternatively, you can use the web interface to call the number you wish via calling a local number.
