Dyson AM06 Cool Fan for $288 @ JB Hi-Fi

92

Found this deal yesterday. According to Pricespy, the lowest recorded price is $285 and so $288 is a pretty good deal I think.

Bought 2 of these at the New Lynn branch in Lynnmall Shopping Center. There are still a lot of stocks left. There's also a display unit in the back on the far right corner, but the staff there are clueless and didn't know about it.

Fan does a great job at cooling the room even at a lower fan speed. Super quiet as well. One of the nicest fans I've used and has great reviews online.

This is a desk fan and operates at 26W, so not really comparable to the tower fans. If you are looking for something that is easily portable and stowable and does a great job cooling the air while operating at low power, then this is a good fan to get.

Not sure when the deal expires.

Update:

Lol. This post turned into a heated discussion.

Is this just an expensive fan?

    • +1

It is subjective. Depends how you define expensive and what you are looking for. Is a $1000 phone expensive? Is a $40,000 car expensive? Do some Google research and test it in person. I bought it because it is very quiet and cools the room a lot more quickly and efficiently compared to the other fans I have used.

      • +9

It isn't subjective, these things just bat air around like any other fan, the only difference is their blades are hidden while doing so. If you actually want to cool a room then you need a heat pump/air conditioner.

        • -1

How is it not subjective? There are fans that costs more than $288. I saw one today that was on special and yet it was still expensive at $850. Now compare that to a fan that is $288, which one is expensive? It's like comparing a car that is 100K vs a car that is $2000. They both have 4 wheels and drive on the road.

As I've said, it depends on what you want. This Dyson is small and quiet and does a good job cooling the room in my house. It is a big living room btw, not a small one. Maybe it didn't do the job for you, but it did for me and I did my research and tests before buying it. That is my personal experience.

Btw, I saw these came out years ago and it was really expensive back then. I never understood why someone would pay so much for them, but I also never really tried them out, until now. One of the nicest and best fans I ever used for sure.

          • +1

@NovaAlpha: I am all for buying expensive items because they are aesthetically better e.g. apple products. Just wanted to know if there was any other functions apart from it being a quieter fan + subjectively aesthetically more pleasing compared to other fans.

          • +4

@NovaAlpha: I mean it isn't subjective because at their core they are still just a fan. They will create a cooling sensation when pointed at a person, but they will not lower the temperature of a room (if anything they will raise it due to their motor's operating temperature).

      • +4

It's a home décor item as much as it is a fan. A good $100 DC motor fan (e.g. Kogan or Midea or even Bunnings) will give out much stronger airflow, and be as quiet as the bladeless ones. Alternatively there are other bladeless fans from places like Kogan that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Their Airblade V hand dryers however are very nice. If only I can afford one.

      • +1

"Is $288 expensive for a desk fan?"

        "Cars cost $40,000."

I got news for you bud, some cars cost way more than that. At that rate this fan is basically free except for the money you still have to give them. I would not hesitate to buy one for every room of my otherwise free house (as compared to the cost of the space programme.)

          • +3

@NovaAlpha: If you make that much in half a days work why are you even here!

              • @NovaAlpha: I never said you couldn't be, Just don't know why you would want to be if you are on such a good wage/salary. It doesn't seem to be an efficient way to spend your time to me.
Why would Cheapies be just for farmers? If anything it would be more useful for modern urban dwellers if anyone.

                  • +12

@NovaAlpha: buying 20 surface pros is also a dick move that goes against the cheapies lifestyle.. Regardless of how rich you are, or if its an investment, stuff like that also ruins it for others.
Also calling others peasants, just cus they don't make $288 in half a day, gtfo.

                    • +1

@rkl: Thinking the surface deal was not a price error to the point you'd think of ordering 20 is pretty interesting in itself. Then there's the willingness to profit off of people you know, definitely not a cheapies trait, people are here to share savings.

                  • +5

@NovaAlpha: Reading your comments, e.g. calling people peasants makes me sad. You dont have to be a dick about it.

      No,it's a lifestyle

    • Normal fans are fine for most people but well running one while sleeping the dyson ones are much quieter

  • +3

I bought one of these last year, it doesn’t seem as powerful as a $30 normal fan. Looks nice though but struggles to cool our bedroom.

    • +1

I have a black model of this -
      https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/goldair-platinum-pedestal-fan…

Purchased from Briscoes late November for $80ish (Sold out now)

      Hands down best investment ever.

Extremely good build quality, looks immaculate and cools my room easy.

      • +2

Yes, I bought a 65cm pedestal fan for $220 from mitre10 and it cools our living room in less than 5 minutes

        • +1

Those industrial ones are absolute beasts. If you can tolerate the noise, they're amazing.

    • +1

If you think about it. The spinning fan is actually at the base of the unit and is much smaller than a traditional pedestal fan (and has to travel 90degrees) hence to generate the same amount of air flow it has to spin much faster (which leads to much more noise and wear)

It's a cool but terrible design IMHO.

      • +2

The way it is designed it actually multiplies air volume , for example 1 L of air produced by the internal fan supposedly creates 15 L by Inducement around and through the ring. These fans are relatively quiet compared to a standard bladed fan and provide a constant flow of air not a pulsing flow that you get from a standard fan.Worth the price probably not but they're pretty cool aren't they?

        • +2

Worth the price probably not but they're pretty cool aren't they

I feel this is Dyson in a nutshell

          • +1

@Plug: Sounds like Apple and Tesla products too.

      • Have you actually tried it? If not, I recommend trying it out in person. I've used a lot of fans at different price points and they are usually loud even at low fan speeds. This Dyson really is quiet and does a great job cooling the room.

Most people who have commented aren't realizing that this is a desk fan, not a tower fan. It's like comparing a normal laptop to an ultrabook. This Dyson is small and can be stowed easily. You can place it anywhere in the room without taking up space. It is designed to be quiet. I honestly couldn't tell it was on at speed 3 or 4, and yet it does a good job cooling the room.

        • +1

I have tried a demo one in a showroom a couple of years ago. Wasn't really impressed maybe it was first gen product.

        • +3

Fans do not cool air they just shift air. It's the effect of moving air across your body that has the cooling affect.A $30 fan from Noel leemings will shift the same amount of air.The Dysons positives are they are elegant ,they take up little space so can be put on a desktop and keep your cool .They are definitely quieter, especially at high-speed.But at 10 times (I paid six dollars, noel leemings so that's 50 fans) the price of a conventional fan I certainly would not recommend them as a great buy as they are simply a great gadget..PS I am not a Dyson hater I have two Classic ball vacuums and two stick Vacuums.

Thanks for the post, got one!

Dyson is trying to be the Apple of Air Suction/Blow gear

It's about the Brand/Aesthetics most of the time and preformance some of the time.

    • -1

Lol what, Dyson was founded in 1991 and have been iterating their designs the whole time..

    • +2

      Agreed.

Dyson also have really shifty business practices as well.

  • -1

Multiple posts are saying that this fan can cool a room. Can someone explain the physics? How does moving air reduce it's temperature?

    • Generally it can't if the room is closed. In that case you are feeling the evaporative effect of sweat drying on your skin. However if there is an open window or cool and warm air temperatures in the room, the fan can move that cooler air around. In that sense, they can "cool a room." In a hot but still evening, a fan by an open window can be surprisingly effective at drawing cool air into the room.

      • Side comment, but if you shut all the windows in your house and set fans up to blow out of one rooms windows, you can then draw hot air out of the house and let cooler evening air into the bedrooms (the only rooms in the house with their windows left open).

        • Great now the neighbours are gonna start popping in your house and taking your stuff and probably your new Dyson ha ha

          • @pdevonporf: Huh? What suburb do you live in 😂

Most people still have open windows when using fans to cool a house in the evening when temps drop outside. This approach just reverses the traditional approach.

You can turn on kitchen and bathroom extraction fans as well.

            • @Jaxson: Well the police actually send out warnings to people because of break-ins in the early Summer evening when people watching television In the front room and leave the bedroom window open at the rear it’s actually quite a common form of theft.

  • +5

Used to have one of these (And one of the larger ones)

They are utter utter utter crap.

    • +2

yup can agree, ex had both the small and big one and they were crap
i later bought a big air circulator (the CAT one sold at M10) and they were much more useful as long as you are not too fussy about noise

  • +2

A fan with a DC motor is the way to go. They can push a lot of air around relatively cheaply. We bought a Micasa 32cm Pedestal Fan from HN last summer, and it’s been fantastic. Pretty ugly looking, but it can circulate almost 360 degrees and it has a remote. If anyone is interested HN still sell them – model MA360CF-F9 $159.

    • +2

I second a DC fan, bought one from Bunnings a few years ago, great thing is you can turn them down really slow so are pretty much silent, which is great for a little air circulation in the bedroom at night without being blasted with noise.

    • All about use case right? We needed a bedroom fan Dyson was the quietest and the quality of other units just was not as nice.
Micasa stuff looks ugly but its cheap enough and will last a good period of time it wont matter when it breaks get the latest model.

      • Yep definitely ugly, but super quiet. We control it automatically with a $20 wifi IR puck and Alexa, it's awesome.

  • +4

I tried one of these and it was just a fan getting ducted up through the ring, how on earth this is worth more than a decent fan I don't know. Fools and their money. This definitely isn't a choice cheapie.

    • I agree with you but it's still a good post because it's a cool gadget at a discounted price even though an expensive fan.Why do people spend $2000 on an iPhone, it's the same thing really.

      • +2

A $2000 iPhone generally does perform (measurable maybe not practically) better than cheaper phones where as this more expensive fan performs worse than cheaper fans in any way you would measure the performance of a fan so there is a bit of difference.

        • Ever heard of Poco F1 or Oneplus One when they first came out? Just because they are cheap, doesn't mean they lack in flagship specs. Reviews do not lie and even the Poco F1 won the blind camera test. Look up the video from MKBHD, his reviews are reputable.

          • @NovaAlpha: The Poco's lack of OLED put me off it, I can't go back to phones without it

      • Try sleeping thru a cheap fan yeah for a living room a cheap one but bedrooms is a hard one

        • Yes we have a low speed Ceiling fan which is probably the best but expensive compare to say a 40 cm quiet fan which is around $150.

  • Taeken ,
I have a Huawei Nova 5T $330.00 and a iPhone $1900.00 .There is absolutely no difference in performance (In the real world)just the operating system. The iPhone does have the edge on the camera but not by much.I also have a two iMacs and two iPads and also three Windows computers .A preference to an operating system doesn't make it better it just means you prefer it.

    • Yeah I'd never pay $2k for a phone and definitely wouldn't buy an iphone but I don't care if other people do.

      • +1

You're absolutely right I cannot justify spending $1500 more for the iPhone and that was my point. This Dyson fan is way overpriced for what it does but how it does it makes it a neat gadget or maybe I'm biased as I sit here beside my $6.20, 30 centimetre endeavour fan.

  • +6

Some heated discussions over a fan…

    • It's the long weekend yay!

      • Long and hot days, depending where you're at.

  • +1

The benefit of this is that it produces a clean breeze and is quiet if you run it on the low settings. Normal fans will produce a more choppy airflow from the fan. They are also called an air multiplier, because it also draws through air from the back of the ring, so not all air flow is from the fan. But I find that the remote malfunctions, where unless you point the remote directly at it, the wrong commands get received by the unit. eg increasing fan speed may cause it to orbit. Sometimes it will do it even when pointing directly at it. Replacing the remote with a new one does the same thing. No option IR remote I have used has this type of problem.

  • +1

If you're buying a fan for the looks then get the Dyson.

If you're buying a fan for functionality, then get a traditional fan for $50.

If you're buying a fan for looks AND functionality without the Dyson price, then China's got your back and have reproduced them for about $50 NZD.

Many strokes for different folks, and let's not kid ourselves; we are all peasants… you bourgeoisie! :)

    • Probably should add that depending on use case got the tower Dyson for the bedroom reason being
Cheaper Squirrel fan designs get clogged up full o dust and motors generally start making noise after years of use which is not ideal for a bedroom.
Ultimately it comes down to use case if it were for a main room during the day for example yeah sure a normal blade fan would be sufficient.
Side note all the ones we saw at Noel leeming/Harveys had either average build quality or no remote (Wi-Fi control doesn't count for less tech savy users)

288 for a quality device good deal and anyone should go for it if it suits their need
